Top 10 Avengers: Endgame Fan Theories That Were Wrong

The Marvel Cinematic Universe sure knows how to keep us guessing! Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 5 Infinity War Theories Everyone Got Wrong. For this list, we’ll be looking at theories that were popular in the lead up to the release of Infinity when plot details for the highly anticipated film were still scarce, but which, now that the film has been released, didn’t play out as expected. WARNING: This list is nothing but spoilers!

#5: Captain Marvel Flies in to Save the Day

Top 5 Fan Theories About Captain Marvel

After seeing Spidey swing into Captain America: Civil War ahead of his solo debut, fans began to speculate that Brie Larson’s spacefaring Captain Marvel would make a similar appearance in Infinity War. With Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the cosmic characters finally coming together, the timing felt right. Going into the film, it seemed pretty obvious that even the combined might of the Avengers, Guardians, and allies wouldn’t be enough to stop Thanos, and so, a Deus Ex Machina entrance by this extremely powerful character felt like a safe bet. Unfortunately, she never showed. Based on the post-credit scene, it looks like we’ll have to wait for Avengers 4 for this theory to come true.

#4: Thanos Is in Love With Hela

Also in:

Gorr vs Thanos

In the comics, Thanos is still a genocidal maniac, but his motivation is a little different - he’s not worried about overpopulation and finite resources within the universe, he plans on wiping out half of all existence all in the name of impressing the woman of his dreams, Death. A physical force and living entity, she cultivated in Thanos an undying affection, and in the comics, he lives to serve her and earn her favor. Of course, in Thor: Ragnarok, we met a goddess of Death, and so naturally, fans started connecting the dots, leading many to assert that Hela, the Asgardian goddess of death, would be Thanos’ infamous mistress. Wrong again!

#3: Tony Stark Sacrifices Himself To Save Steve

Also in:

Bruce Wayne Vs Tony Stark

Mistress Death might not have played a role in the film, but just as we’d been warned, death played a very prominent part in this movie. The funny thing is, few deaths actually played out as people had predicted. Given Robert Downey Jr.’s age, and the fact that the MCU is supposedly heading in a new direction moving forward, as well as some rather dramatic moments in the trailers… Tony Stark seemed like a marked man. One of the most popular theories was that Tony would actually take the proverbial bullet for Steve, bringing a dramatic end to their painful feud. But wouldn’t you know it, they didn’t so much as share a phone call.

#2: Captain America Dies

Top 10 Greatest Captain America MCU Moments

Online odds as to which Avengers would die in Infinity War consistently saw Cap and Iron interchangeably ranking as the top two. Given Chris Evans’ rather outspoken plans to move on in his career, and the emotional weight that Steve’s death would surely carry, many a fan went into the film mentally preparing themselves to say goodbye. It’s happened before in the comics, and with not one, but two of Steve’s in-comic successors, Bucky and Sam, ready and waiting to take on the mantle of Captain America, it was honestly more surprising that he didn’t die. The fact that he and Tony both survived? That was almost unthinkable!

#1: The Location of the Soul Stone Across the first three phases of the MCU, diehard fans have had a blast identifying the various powerful elements in the films that would wind up serving as the infinity stones. But going into Avengers: Infinity War, the soul stone remained unaccounted for, and theories abounded. Some thought that the soul stone had already been hidden away inside of Nebula. Others thought that it was in Heimdall’s possession due to his eye color and a popular theory that suggested the location of the stones spelled out the name T.H.A.N.O.S. Some suggested that it was somehow in Tony Stark. Perhaps one of the most popular was that it was in Wakanda. Of course, in the end, it was on the planet Vormir, along with a very unexpected cameo.
