TNT! Headshots! Pigs!
These videos have it all!

Welcome to WatchMojo's Let's Play Countdown, where we share our favorite Let's Play videos in a specific category. Today's installment is all about Minecraft competition videos. Minecraft gets a lot of flak from certain circles, but if regular Minecraft is vanilla, then the challenge mods in these videos add fudge, nuts, and a whole lot of sprinkles. If you already hate the game (and we know many of you do), these challenges probably won't sell you on it, but if you've never played, they might make you want to start.

What better way to kick off our list of Minecraft competitions than with an in-game version of the ultimate clash of nations? Of course, the regular Olympics are a bit dull, so to spice things up, these events are powered by blocks of TNT. This actually makes a lot of sense: you can’t really jump all that high in Minecraft, so the TNT is used to propel our noble Minecraftletes to new heights of greatness. It’s the Olympics on digital super steroids. Even if all this doesn’t interest you, you gotta commend the immense amount of effort put into the Olympic arena. Check out those pressure plates that set off the long jump… Of course, some events work better than others: the equestrian event (which is done with pigs, obviously) is about as confusing as it is destructive. This video is actually a two-parter, so if you like this first one, be sure to check out the thrilling conclusion in part 2.

#4: Minecraft: GAMINGWITHJEN CHALLENGE GAMES - Lucky Block Mod - Modded Mini-Game Channel: PopularMMOs

8 Ways to Troll on Minecraft Public Servers

Maybe you’ve already seen some Lucky Block Challenge videos, there are a lot of them. They are definitely less elaborate than that Olympics challenge; “Lucky Blocks” is a mod that allows for special question-mark blocks to be added to your game. These blocks contain a random items, mobs and even structures. In the Lucky Block Challenge players grab a bunch of these blocks, crack them open, and then fight to the death with whatever they find inside. While there’s TONS of these challenge clips out there, a personal favorite of ours is this one from PopularMMOs, which includes a guest appearance by GAMINGWITHJEN. What’s fun about this one is the rules are clearly defined, the area is minimalistic and simple, and the personalities – Jen and Pat - are charming. It’s always nice to see a guy attacking his wife with buckets of lava, right? The battles themselves are fun, but my favorite bits happen in between the fights, like when Pat falls down into a trap and then tries to get Jen to join him… Or when Jen accidentally spawns a wishing well of death for herself…

Top 10 Best Minecraft Challenges!

There’s a ton of popular trends in Minecraft these days – some of the most prevalent are mods that turn the vanilla experience into a completely different game, usually some sort of player versus player competition. Minecraft’s gameplay and graphics are so basic that modding it to resemble a AAA game is kind of ridiculous… And, potentially, ridiculously fun. The ultimate kings of PVP combat, at least on consoles, is arguably the Halo franchise, so the invention of this mod was basically inevitable. As crazy as this all looks, the amount of detail that went into this mod is really impressive. But, the whole experience still feels really broken– despite all the attention to detail in the design, this is not the slick, smooth, headshot and explosion-filled experience of a Halo deathmatch. It’s Minecraft. The way the players have a great time embracing the chaos of it makes this video really fun to watch. Most fun and chaotic moment? When a player named House_Owner mixes and matches Red and Blue armor and decides to go buck wild on everyone….before he runs out of ammo and then has to run for his life. From there, it only devolves further. The pixelated Spartans run out of ammo and have to use bows and swords in the final few minutes, until finally the host, Sky, just sorta… falls through the world.

Top 10 Minecraft Mods

I know we’ve seen some pretty loud, wacky stuff in this countdown, so it may surprise you that we’re going with something a bit more subdued. But, we feel that DRLgaming’s video of a “The Walls” mod playthrough really captures the essence of Minecraft, which is what makes it an easy choice for us. The Walls mod goes something like this: 4 teams are each given an equally sized plot of land. While these plots are adjacent to each other, they are separated by huge walls of sand. After 15 minutes of preparation time used to build a base and gather supplies, the walls come down and then it’s an all out brawl between the 4 sides. On the surface this might seem a bit dry compared to some of the other events we’ve seen today, but this particular challenge requires a lot more strategizing and cooperation, and a lot less running around like a maniac. So get this, the host DRL and his partner decide to build a giant lookout tower in the middle of the map, but in doing so, they cut themselves off from their food supply. Not only that, but every other team decided to do the opposite and head underground, making the lookout tower a big, inconvenient eyesore. The thrilling conclusion, at least for our unlucky host, is when he returns to his base to find it infested with the enemy – one of whom gets the drop on him when he gets inside

#1: Wool Race – Part 1 (through 4) Channel: YOGSCAST Lewis & Simon

You know a game is gonna go well when someone commits suicide while they’re still picking the teams Of course, this is all in the spirit of sportsmanship. Anyway! Race for the Wool, which these guys are playing in this clip, is another popular Minecraft mod. It’s essentially a scavenger hunt. 2 teams are released into mirrored “lanes” or map areas, and must find a specific set wool blocks and bring them back to their monument to win Of course, they can also try to screw with the other team from afar as they search, which is the obviously the best part. Veks, who designed this mod and map, obviously realized that this aspect was the most fun as well: on top of the various obstacles strewn about the map, there are also makeshift TNT cannons that the teams can use to fire volleys at each other… if they can figure out how they work. The coolest aspect of Race for the Wool is the fact that the contestants have to use real Minecraft skills to succeed: everything from crafting tools to cleverly overcoming obstacles. Of course, the Yogscast guys have put some extra touches to make their Race for the Wool showdown more watchable. For example, since there are two players per team here, a helpful avatar icon appears in the top left so you know who’s camera you’re following and when. This whole affair actually takes quite a while, so this competition is divided into 4 parts. So did these challenges make you want try the game? What’s your favorite challenge video, and what should we cover next? For more countdowns published daily, be sure to subscribe to WatchMojo.com.
