#3 Leggo My Eggo
Like Spinal Tap, the opening scene of this trailer goes to Eleven. We see a figure, soon revealed to be our young heroine, snatch the box of waffles Sheriff Hopper placed in a box to try and lure Eleven back from the Upside Down, to where she was banished as a result of her selfless actions in Season 1. But is she back now for good? We catch glimpses of her throughout the trailer, far more than we did in the previous season 2 trailers, and her formerly bald head is now covered in a shaggy mullet that would do Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley proud. Coincidence? We think not.
#2 Our Spidey Senses Are Tingling
Sorry, Peter Parker, we can all agree that spiders are scary. Humanity is hard-wired to fear the 8-legged killing machines. And that’s what makes the monster in this trailer so damn terrifying: a looming, massive dark spider-shape that towers over Hawkins, Indiana. Or is it more octopus than spider? Paging Cthulhu, those do look like tentacles . . . What is this creature? What are its powers and what does it want? Does it also have a taste for blood like the Demogorgon? Is it out for revenge for its dead homie? It looks like an even bigger and more menacing Shelob from “Lord of the Rings”. And speaking of Tolkien. . .
#1 The Upside Down Gets Inside You
This whole trailer is basically one long tease for whatever is going on with Will. At the end of the first season, we got a little taste of how his sojourn in the Upside Down might have changed him forever, much like Frodo was transformed (and not in a good way) by his long custodianship of the One Ring. But how was Will affected? After all, we see his mom Winona Ryder screaming “WHAT’S WRONG WITH MY BOY?” and that’s never a good sign. Is he being eaten alive by evil thoughts? Hs he acquired powers? Is he tempted by the Dark side? Is he gonna save the day? We can hardly wait to find out.
