#10: Stalling Thanos
“Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) Since he first popped up in the end credits of 2012’s “The Avengers”, Thanos has been on a quest to bring balance to the universe. With four Infinity Stones in his possession you knew the Mad Titan was going to do some serious damage. Stranded on planet Titan, Strange and company come up with a plan to stop Thanos and it almost works but because Quill couldn’t keep his cool, he’s able to break free. In the ensuing chaos, Strange takes on Thanos and pulls a number of tricks to stop him but with the Infinity Stones as his disposal, he’s simply too strong. In order to continue the fight another day, he willingly gives up the Time Stone, arguing it’s the only way.

“New Avengers Vol. 2 #34” (2012) The vengeful spirit Daniel Drumm blames Strange for the death of his brother, Doctor Voodoo. Drumm possesses the New Avengers to exact his revenge and destroy Strange. The magician has to take on the likes of Red Hulk, Spider-Man, the Thing, Captain America and Thor. He demonstrates his mastery of the mystic arts as he’s able to subdue his friends/teammates without hurting them. However, he’s no match for Captain Marvel when Drumm possesses her to fight Strange. Thankfully, Vision is able to step in and lend a hand giving Strange time to look up a spell to trap Drumm and destroy him with dark magic.

“What If...?” (2021-) Sometimes you just have to let things go or the universe could be destroyed. This variant of Doctor Strange learns the hard way when he becomes obsessed with saving Christine from dying. Despite warnings from the Ancient One that trying to save her would create a time paradox that would tear apart the universe, Strange is determined to find a way. He believes he just needs to become powerful enough and goes on a long quest to get stronger by absorbing powerful beings, including a version of himself. He’s able to save Christine but that pesky paradox causes the universe to collapse and even pleas to the Watcher to intervene fail.
#7: Trapping Dormammu in a Time Loop
“Doctor Strange” (2016) Some moments you want to relive again and again. Others, not so much. One such moment could be when Doctor Strange trapped Dormammu in a time loop. Although Strange is powerful, he wisely figures that brute force isn’t the only way to defeat an enemy. Had he tried to go up against Dormammu, he would have been squashed like a bug as we saw over and over and over. Realizing that Strange had the upper hand, the evil being had no choice but to bargain. The good doctor demonstrated his mental toughness going through repeated agony every time he met his end. Some battles can be won with words.

“Doctor Strange Vol. 1 #383” (2017) Loki becoming the Sorcerer Supreme just doesn’t sit well with Stephen Strange. He believes the god of mischief is looking to cast a spell that will transfer all the world’s magic to him. Strange can’t let that happen because he trusts Loki about as far as he can throw him. A man with a plan, he travels to Asgard where he goes before Yggdrasil who gives Strange a serious upgrade in power, becoming the Asguardian god of magic. Now, he’s ready to take on Loki, who he can handle with ease. After a few hiccups with the rest of Strange’s plan and the revelation that the whole thing was a ruse by Loki, he’s restored as the Sorcerer Supreme.
#5: Mastering the Way of the Black Priests
“New Avengers Vol. 3 #27” (2014) In order to stop the multiverse collapsing the Multiversal Avengers confront the Black Priests believing the group is responsible since they’ve destroyed multiple Earths. The Avengers quickly discover that the priests can manipulate the fabric of reality through uttering a combination of syllables. After a brief fight between the two groups, Strange reveals himself as the leader of the priests. He isn’t limited to syllables, however, and can form words on his own giving him the ability to distort reality including destroying worlds as he and the Black Priests have done as a way of stabilizing the multiverse.
#4: Holding Back the Multiverse
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021)” Strange messing up the spell that would make everyone forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man created a lot of problems to say the least. But to be fair Peter kept changing the parameters as the spell was being cast and it did provide some funny and heartwarming moments with the other two Peters. Strange spends most of the film trying to fix everything but when the multiverse begins tearing at the seams, it takes all that he has to hold everything back. Peter decides the only way to save the multiverse is for everyone to forget who he is. He asks Strange to cast a spell doing just that.
#3: Developing Infinite Longevity
“Doctor Strange Vol. 2 #4” (1974) If Stephen Strange has a youthful look, it’s no accident. When Strange is pulled into the Orb of Agamotto, he comes across Death who wants to claim his life. Strange realizes that he can’t fight Death, only evade it but only for so long. Running out of options, Strange reasons that death is a part of life and the only thing he can do is accept it and with that he dies. But only momentarily as the Ancient One reveals it was the first of many trials Strange will face as Sorcerer Supreme. Having conquered his fear of dying, Strange can no longer age, or succumb to illness meaning death can only come from battle.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (2022) While Strange has demonstrated time and time again his proficiency in the mystic arts, he’s also able to think quickly on his feet. Being stuck in an incursion-destroyed universe doesn’t stop him from figuring out a way to save America Chavez from the Scarlet Witch. With the Darkhold in hand, he dreamwalks into the corpse of Defender Strange. Since possessing the dead isn’t considered kosher, Strange is attacked by Souls of the Damned. Even then he’s able to subdue them and use them as a cloak for zombie Defender Strange.
#1: Swallowing Infinity Ultron's Attack
“What If...?” (2021-) When Ultron threatens to destroy the multiverse, the Watcher assembles the Guardians of the Multiverse to stop him. This version of Ultron has been powered up by the Infinity Stones after quickly disposing of Thanos. During their battle with Ultron, Star Lord T’Challa manages to steal the Soul Stone from him, making him slightly weaker. In a moment of frustration Ultron unleashes a world destroying blast that Strange is able to easily absorb, leaving Ultron bewildered. Strange is the only one who can stand up to his power and the two battle as the rest of the team work to infect Ultron with an AI capable of shutting him down.
