#10: Ed “Shaun of the Dead” (2004)

When we first meet Ed in this horror comedy, he is the rude and crude, yet oddly lovable roommate of Shaun, the unlikely hero of the movie. When the town is taken over by zombies, though, it’s just a matter of time before the beer-guzzling, wisecracking slob is added to their numbers. Not one to let a little thing like flesh craving stand in the way of friendship or some video game time, Shaun decides to keep Ed in his shed – much to our delight.

Those infected with the Rage Virus in this film series are relatively intelligent, super fast and extremely bloodthirsty. We’re first introduced to this version of the undead in “28 Days Later,” through dark and dangerous characters like Private Mailer. However, in the 2007 sequel, Don leaves an even more memorable impression, as he starts out as the protagonist but eventually falls victim to the virus himself. After sharing one last kiss with the wife he’d left to die, he brutally attacks and kills her. Poor guy didn’t know she was infected, yet immune to its effects.
#8: Standartenführer Oberst Herzog “Dead Snow” (2009)
Take one part zombie, add one part Nazi and you end up with a mean, menacing and memorable monster cocktail. This low-budget Norwegian flick introduces audiences to Herzog, commander to an army of Nazi zombies. He delivers an unforgettable performance that is humorously over the top, but still intensely creepy as he growls out orders and hunts down a group of vacationing students with military precision. Well, at least Hitler didn’t come back as a zombie.

While some zombies stand out because of their physical skill or chilling presence, this zombie is memorable because of her grotesque appearance – both before and after her transformation. A character who died without ever revealing her name, she’s only referred to as the bloated woman, and her decaying flesh only adds to the look. Plus nothing gets the blood pumping quite like a zombie suddenly popping out of bed with an eerie look in its eyes before chasing someone through a furniture store.

In a film franchise where zombies seem to be mindless, vicious, and brainless monsters, Bub is definitely unique. As a research subject of Dr. Logan, Bub is proof that zombies can not only be trained to be passive, but also that they may have memories of their living years and can express emotion. Bub is a captivating character, mesmerizing us as he carefully studies a shaving razor, book, telephone and even a gun. We think audiences are drawn to the human side of this member of the undead.

Zombies are creatures designed to elicit chills and thrills. Now add some creepy clown makeup and you have a double scare. This clown’s brightly colored outfit, green hair and blood oozing smile make for a perfectly gruesome image as it stares down Columbus on the carnival grounds. Hilariously, this is Columbus’ greatest nightmare come to life, but it’s that which makes him change one of his cardinal rules. Even so, when it comes to this particular “Zombieland” addition, a clown is no laughing matter.
#4: “Warm Bodies” (2013)
Who says that zombies can’t have feelings? It’s love at first bite for audiences, as R stumbles upon Julie while in search of a warm body to devour. R is the opposite of what we’ve come to expect from the zombie genre, though: he’s handsome, if a bit pale, and innocently caring. Opposites attract for this zombie and his ladylove, making him as much a romantic comedy hero as he is a horror movie monster.

Once a gas station attendant, always a gas station attendant – even after a zombie apocalypse. One of the few zombies we’ve ever encountered with enough wherewithal to be a truly terrifying foe. He uses his intellect, strength and commanding presence to strike terror into the living. In an age where zombies have become pretty straightforward and predicable, Big Daddy breathes new life into the archetype.

When a bumbling security guard accidentally pierces a tank of the experimental 2-4-5 Trioxin, this horrifying zombie is not only reanimated, but the gas causes his skin to rot away, leaving exposed a terrifying mixture of bone and mush. And, while he may look weak, appearances can be deceiving, as he’s got an ironclad grip. One of the most quotable zombies in the genre, Tarman’s insatiable hunger is punctuated with a demanding scream for brains, followed by some savory skull munching and requests for more.
