The night before both doctors were scheduled to take their oral board exams, a chance encounter April has with a jerk in a bar caused these two co-workers with undeniable chemistry to come together. It all begins when jealous resident Kevin Banks gets belligerent, and Jackson steps in, telling Kevin to get out and go home. When April responds with an impressive suckerpunch, it’s Jackson who gets a retaliatory fist in the face, and April’s turn to step in between them. So maybe this should actually be When April Defended Jackson? Sounds eventful, but for these two, the night was just getting started.

“Who Is He (And What Is He to You)?” Not too long after the pair’s divorce, April and Jackson wound up on a work trip together when they flew from Seattle to Montana to perform a delicate surgery on a young girl’s throat. Though the two aren’t on great terms, when April realizes Jackson’s estranged father is living in town and it’s affecting Jackson’s work, she helps and encourages Jackson to confront his feelings and his father, and in the process the pair come up with a way to save the girl’s life. The moment is capped off by a successful surgery, and the two reliving old times.

It hurts us to see the couple in so much pain, but things would get better for both of them, eventually.

In this season 12 tear-jerker, we see the proceedings of the divorce between April and Jackson, juxtaposed with a series of flashbacks going deeper into their relationship over the years. But, at the end of the episode, when April asked Jackson one last question before she signs the divorce papers, we could actually feel our hearts breaking.
