VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton WRITTEN BY: Adriana Travisano
These celebs went from friends to lovers. For this list, we'll be looking at our favorite celebrity couples who embodied the friends-to-lovers trope IRL! Our countdown includes Ben Platt & Noah Galvin, Zendaya & Tom Holland, Mila Kunis & Ashton Kutcher, and more!

#10: Camila Cabello & Shawn Mendes

Cabello and Mendes first met while they were both opening up for Austin Mahone back in the mixed-prints and bomber jacket era of 2014. At the time, Mendes was just starting to find fame after his success on Vine and Cabello was still part of Fifth Harmony. They became close friends and would later put out “I Know What You Did Last Summer” the next year. Their 2019 collab, "Señorita", is where the speculation of something more between them began and they eventually confirmed they were dating, after they were spotted kissing on the Fourth of July the same year. The couple has since broken up but remain friends. So, maybe we can get on board with a new trope: friends-to-lovers-back-to-friends!

#9: Angela Bassett & Courtney B. Vance

This one’s pretty adorable. Bassett and Vance were theatre classmates at the Yale School of Drama during the 80s. Vance had a girlfriend at the time, which probably explains why he doesn’t remember Bassett. Bassett, on the other hand, apparently remembers thinking Vance was quite the attractive guy. After they graduated and each went down their own paths, they eventually reconnected 14 years down the line and went on a few dates before falling in love. Sometimes things just take time, and this couple is proof of that, with a marriage hitting the 25-year mark in 2022! Congrats to the happy couple!

#8: Carey Mulligan & Marcus Mumford

Top 10 Best Carey Mulligan Moments

Can we get a based-on-a-true-story rom-com with these two, please? Their relationship timeline is straight out of a movie! Mulligan and Mumford started out as childhood pen pals who wrote letters to each other through their church. Like many of us and the friends we had from when we were kids, Mulligan and Mumford grew up and lost touch along the way. But, they reconnected years later in 2011, at a party in Tennessee. Things must have moved pretty quickly because the couple tied the knot only a year later! They now live in a stunning English farmhouse with their two children. A love story for the ages, this one!

#7: Ben Platt & Noah Galvin

Broadway’s “Dear Evan Hansen” stars Ben Platt and Noah Galvin got together while quarantining together at the height of the pandemic back in 2020. It’s a beautiful thing to come out of such an awful time, and we couldn’t be happier for the duo. They were friends for a whole five years before their friendship became romantic, and we have no doubt they’re in it for the long haul! According to Galvin, it all started with a birthday video Platt made for him over the course of three months, consisting of his favorite drag queens and friends in drag wishing him a happy birthday. While they do keep their relationship relatively private, Platt and Galvin often post to social media celebrating one another.

#6: Gwen Stefani & Blake Shelton

If you’re a long-time fan of “The Voice”, there’s a good chance you’ll already know this love story. The pair met on the NBC competition show when Stefani replaced Christina Aguilera in 2014. Shelton and his now ex-wife, Miranda Lambert filed for divorce only a year later, and only a month before Stefani’s long-term marriage ended with Gavin Rossdale. The two supported each other through their divorces, checking in on each other once a week, which eventually progressed to every day. By October of the same year, their performance on “Fallon” opened the flood-gates for speculation and, in November, the couple announced they were officially dating.

#5: Kourtney Kardashian & Travis Barker

Although rumors only sparked in 2019, when Kardashian and Barker were seen getting dinner in Malibu, the two had actually been friends for years prior. They officially confirmed their romantic relationship around Valentine’s Day of 2021 with a cute Instagram post of the two holding hands. Just recently, Kourtney Kardashian also posted a few photos confirming the news that Kravis is now married! As per her Insta caption, they got hitched in Las Vegas in the only open chapel at 2 in the morning and their wedding was officiated by an Elvis impersonator. You don’t get more of a Vegas wedding than that!

#4: Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds

Top 20 Times Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds Made Us Believe in Love

This is a story so true to the hilarious characters that are Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. Leave it to these two to find love on a double date… with other people! They made their debut together in “Green Lantern”, but both parties were in relationships with other people at the time. Those people, of course, being none other than Scarlett Johansson and Penn Badgley! A year after the movie’s release, Lively and Reynolds found themselves single and on that terribly awkward date, but they soon went from close friends to partners to spouses! They now have three kids and are definitely one of Hollywood’s favorite couples!

#3: Zendaya & Tom Holland

Top 20 Memorable Zendaya Outfits

You remember when their pictures broke the internet, right? Yeah, us too! Zendaya and Holland became fast friends on the set of "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and it didn’t take long for fans to start shipping the duo. After insisting they were just friends, things dialed down for a little while. But just when we thought all hope was lost, summer of 2021 rolled around, and with it came some Tomdaya car kisses. While we’re not sure when exactly the couple got together, a producer of Marvel’s first “Spider-Man” installment said their chemistry was so obvious, she had to warn them not to date. Holland would go on to tell GQ they kept their relationship private to protect what they had which, you know, is super understandable!

#2: Mila Kunis & Ashton Kutcher

Top 20 Times Ashton Kutcher & Mila Kunis Made Us Believe in Love

Yet another fan favorite pair is “That ‘70s Show” stars Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher. The two met on the set in 1998, back when Kunis was 14 and Kutcher was 19. There were no romantic feelings at the time–and we would hope there wouldn’t be!–even though Kutcher was actually Kunis’ first kiss, and they spent quite a lot of time together as an onscreen couple. It was only way later in 2012 when the two reconnected at a party that they began seeing each other. The idea was that they’d keep things casual, but that plan quickly went out the window when they both realized they shared deeper feelings. The two got married in 2015 and, contrary to tabloid rumors, they never split up!

#1: Rihanna & A$AP Rocky

Top 10 Most Hilarious Rihanna Moments

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky are another couple who have a ton of history! They first met during their 2012 collab “Cockiness (Love It)”. Their performance at the MTV VMAs the same year didn’t go without fan speculation that there might be something more between them. It wouldn’t be until 2019, however, that sparks would fly. Official confirmation came in 2020, and Rocky went on to call Rihanna "the love of my life" in a GQ interview. Cue the “aww”s! Just recently in 2022, the couple revealed they’re expecting! They’ve both expressed excitement to become parents and we have no doubt they’ll be great at it!
