Top 10 Times Celeb Couples Clapped Back About Their Age Gaps

Top 10 Times Celeb Couples Clapped Back About Their Age Gaps
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton WRITTEN BY: Robin Schwartzkopf
These celeb couples calpped back about their age gaps. For this list, we'll be looking at the best instances of famous people defending and responding to criticism about the difference in age between them and their partners. Our countdown includes Kim Kardashian & Pete Davidson, Olivia Wilde & Harry Styles, Florence Pugh & Zach Braff, and more!

#10: Florence Pugh & Zach Braff

When eagle-eyed fans started spotting up-and-coming actress Florence Pugh with the much older “Scrubs” star in 2019, the Internet went abuzz. Pugh was 23 years old at the time, while Braff was 44. The 21-year age gap between the two continued to be a topic of conversation in Pugh’s Instagram comments, especially on a post she made for his 45th birthday. The actress responded with a video calling out the toxicity. She received more rude comments the following year, but notably told the Sunday Times, “it's my life and I'm not doing anything to please people.” That’s a powerful statement.

#9: Megan Fox & Machine Gun Kelly

The gap between these two barely exists, but Fox was still forced to respond. The actress reportedly began dating musician Machine Gun Kelly in 2020. As Megan has correctly stated, the two could have gone to high school together, but despite that she still received hate. But she firmly countered the critics in an interview with InStyle, and her main target was the patriarchal system itself. Fox notably called out the double-standards at play, pointing out that such a small age gap would never make the news if the man was the older one in the relationship. In this battle of Fox versus misogyny, the actress definitely won.

#8: Catherine Zeta-Jones & Michael Douglas

This longtime pair has a quarter century age difference between them. They met in 1998, and were married in 2000. Instead of trading insults with those who criticize her union, Catherine Zeta-Jones shared some advice about being in an age gap relationship with WSJ Magazine. For the actress, the “constant is love and respect.” She said that the couple genuinely enjoys spending time together. What’s more, they’ve figured out how to preserve their sense of humor to ensure that their bond stands the test of time. Considering how long their marriage has lasted thus far, it definitely seems to be working.

#7: Kim Kardashian & Pete Davidson

In October 2021, Kim Kardashian was spotted holding hands with comedian Pete Davidson on a night out in California. Although they seemed to be keeping it casual, their romance bloomed from there, with the two notably attending the Met Gala and White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Kardashian is about 13 years older than Davidson, meaning that they’ve been subjected to the age gap discourse online, with people commenting on their relationship. But speaking to E! News, she essentially explained that a person’s energy matters far more than the year they were born. It sounds like she’s fully embracing their age difference, no matter what anyone says!

#6: Katharine McPhee Foster & David Foster

Katharine McPhee has used humor as a response to the haters since her relationship with David Foster became public. The married couple are roughly 35 years apart in age, and she has often taken to social media to quip about the gap. In 2019, she joked that she was too busy doing homework to record a song for Foster’s ‘90s Christmas album. When a person called her relationship “geriatric love” and implied she had daddy issues, she had a perfectly clever comeback. Anybody who’s still doubting the couple can check out their performances as Banana Split on “The Masked Singer,” too!

#5: Sam Taylor-Johnson & Aaron Taylor-Johnson

In 2008, Aaron auditioned for the role of John Lennon in “Nowhere Boy,” which Sam was directing. He was in his late teens at the time, while she was in her early 40s. He got the part, and a year after they met, he proposed. Thus, the Taylor-Johnsons built their family and got married. But people love to question their 23-year age gap. In 2019, he told The Telegraph UK that it’s not a big deal to them. He explained how his work prior to meeting her made him grow up fast, and said that as a result, they were “on the same wavelength.”

#4: Priyanka Chopra Jonas & Nick Jonas

Double standards strike again. Priyanka Chopra Jonas is 10 years older than her husband Nick Jonas. She has joked about the gap, roasting him for not understanding her pop culture references and joking about how he taught her to use TikTok. Although the age difference between them doesn’t really seem particularly scandalous, they’ve still faced a slew of negative comments. And she exposed the inconsistent ideas surrounding age gaps in relationships in an interview. Much like Megan Fox, she pointed out that scenarios involving older men dating younger women are often either ignored or admired. Maybe the couple’s haters are just jealous?

#3: Olivia Wilde & Harry Styles

In 2020, Harry Styles was cast in Olivia Wilde’s film “Don’t Worry Darling.” In January 2021, photos surfaced of the pair holding hands at a wedding, and the public sightings only picked up from there. But they were pretty private about their relationship from the start, never really commenting on it publicly. Wilde, who’s ten years older than the former One Direction star, seemed to confront the age gap criticisms before even officially confirming their romance. In an interview with Vogue, she notably stated that she doesn’t worry herself about the opinions of outsiders on social media. Here’s to that!

#2: Heidi Klum & Tom Kaulitz

When you have the world of high fashion to contend with, haters don’t stand a chance. The supermodel and the guitarist found love despite their age difference of approximately 16 years. They reportedly started dating in 2018, and got married the following year. The gap has led to some questions and raised eyebrows. But Klum told InStyle that she doesn’t think about it – or age in general – except when it’s “shoved in [her] face.” She explained that the only time it’s a topic of discussion is when other people try to make it one. Her wise supermodel advice was, “worrying is only going to give you more wrinkles.”

#1: Sarah Paulson & Holland Taylor

In the category of heartwarming clap backs, Sarah Paulson will always defend her relationship with Holland Taylor. The actresses were first romantically linked in 2015, though they met a decade earlier. Taylor is about 32 years older than Paulson, so the romance generated a lot of attention. Rather than pretending the gap doesn’t exist, Paulson has offered her thoughts on the benefits of dating an older woman. Speaking to the New York Times, she said, “there’s a greater appreciation of time and what you have together and what’s important.” It sounds to us like their age gap isn’t anywhere near as big as the love they share.
