Top 10 Best Movies and TV Shows Coming to Streaming October 2020_A5U7S2

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Best Movies and TV Shows Coming to Streaming October 2020. For this list, we’ll be looking at the very best new content coming to various popular streaming services this month. What shows or movies are you most excited to watch this October? Sound off in the comments below!

#10: “Helstrom” (2020-) Season 1

Hulu: October 16th, 2020 Are you still feeling the sting of Netflix cancelling all of its MCU series? While we wait for Disney+ to start putting out its own highly anticipated live-action Marvel programming, Hulu has got the perfect series to fill the void. “Helstorm” is by no means Marvel’s biggest property, but this trailer has given us plenty of reason to get excited. A standalone series taking place in the larger MCU, “Helstorm” follows the titular siblings Daimon and Ana as they “hunt for the worst of humanity”. Though described as the children of a notorious serial killer, those who are familiar with the comics will tell you that there’s likely more to these two than meets the eye.

#9: “The Right Stuff” (2020-)

Disney+: October 9th, 2020 Based on Tom Wolfe’s 1979 book, this television adaptation certainly seems well-positioned to live up to its name. “The Right Stuff” follows the lives of the Mercury Seven and their families. After their names were publicly announced by NASA in 1959, these brave pilots (and America’s first astronauts) became overnight celebrities for their groundbreaking contributions to the early days of the space race. These men and the rigorous trials they went through are truly the stuff of legend. The book was previously adapted as a film in the early 1980s, but given the years worth of stories to come out of this chapter in American history, a high budget serialized retelling certainly feels justified.

#8:”Book of Blood” (2020)

Every Single Book to Movie Adaptation in 2020

Hulu: October 7th, 2020 Ever heard of a man by the name of Clive Barker? He just so happens to be among the most famous figures of modern horror fiction and film. Over the years he’s given us influential properties as “Hellraiser” and “Candyman”. Now, thanks to Hulu, yet another of his most celebrated properties is being adapted to the screen. Released between 1984 and 1985, Clive Barker’s Books of Blood are a collection of short stories collected in 6 volumes. They’re what really put the writer on the map. This adaptation revisits three of these terrifying tales for what looks to be a thoroughly chilling cinematic experience.

#7: “Equal” (2020-)

HBO Max: October 22nd, 2020 When HBO Max launched in May of 2020, it was venturing into an already crowded and competitive market. Having already amassed millions of paying subscribers, however, it seems to be distinguishing itself from the pack! And so long as they keep putting out high quality content like this, their subscriber base is sure to keep growing. “Equal” is a four-part docu-series that chronicles some of the most important moments from throughout LGBTQ history. Each episode is dedicated to one such event or figure, brought to life through the use of archival footage and re-enactments. The ensemble cast includes some impressive talent such as Samira Wiley, Cheyenne Jackson, Anthony Rapp, Alexandra Grey and many more.

#6: “Rebecca” (2020)

Netflix: October 21st 2020 October is a spooky month! As such, pretty much every streaming service is putting their best foot forward in terms of horror and supernatural content. Adapted from the 1938 gothic novel by Daphne du Maurier, “Rebecca” tells the story of a newly married young woman who must contend with the ghost of her husband’s first wife. The book was previously adapted by Alfred Hitchcock himself, so director Ben Wheatley certainly has some big shoes to fill. But based on that beautiful and haunting trailer, we feel like he just might be able to do it. Even if it pales in comparison to the 1940 film, this promises to be a satisfying thriller in its own right.

#5: “David Byrne's American Utopia” (2020)

Top 10 Best David Fincher Movies

HBO Max: October 17th, 2020 David Byrne is best known as the singer and founder of Talking Heads, but he’s a multi-hyphenate to rival the best of them. And wouldn’t you know it, “screenwriter” is one of the many hats he wears. “American Utopia” is a film that defies classification. Although it’s considered a “concert film”, it’s actually in fact a live recording of an adapted version of Byrne’s “American Utopia” album being performed on Broadway. While it’s David Byrne’s name in the title, it’s also a Spike Lee Joint, meaning the enigmatic “BlacKKKlansman” director is at the helm. The movie debuted at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival and has thus far garnered rave reviews from fans and critics alike. It’s even been labelled “a flat-out masterpiece”. We. can’t. wait.

#4: “On the Rocks” (2020)

Apple TV +: October 23rd, 2020 After receiving a very limited release courtesy of A24, “On the Rocks” has been picked up by Apple TV+. True to their word, Apple’s streaming service is focusing on quality over quantity. Their content has admittedly been hit-or-miss to date, but this is undeniably a feather in their cap. Rashida Jones and Bill Murray star as a father (Felix) and daughter (Laura) who, despite a somewhat strained relationship, begin investigating Laura’s husband, Dean. He’s been working late and, having been quite the philanderer in his day, Felix suspects him of infidelity. Directed by Sofia Coppola, “On the Rocks”' is charming, insightful, funny and boasts great performances by both Jones and Murray.

#3: “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (2020)

Also in:

Top 10 Things Coming to Streaming in March 2021

Netflix: October 16th, 2020 A strong ensemble cast? Hollywood legend Aaron Sorkin serving as both director and screenwriter? This film has awards season written all over it. “The Trial of the Chicago 7” is a legal drama inspired by the real court battle that occured in 1968 stemming from anti-Vietnam War protests. The film was originally intended for a theatrical release, but it’s headed to Netflix as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sorkin’s trademark dialogue is front and center in the trailer, which also highlights the film’s star power. And speaking of star power, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Keaton are just a few of the big names appearing in this film. With a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it promises to be a satisfying and timely viewing experience.

#2: “The Haunting of Bly Manor” (2020)

Top 10 Movies That Will Blow Your Mind in 2020

Netflix: October 9th, 2020 Based on “The Turn of the Screw” by Henry James, “The Haunting of Bly Manor” is a good old fashioned haunted house story. Stephen King once called “ The Turn of the Screw” one of “the only two great novels of the supernatural in the last hundred years”. The other one was “The Haunting of Hill House”. So yeah, director Mike Flanagan and his team certainly know how to pick their source material! After the success of the first season (of what has now become an anthology series), Bly Manor is one of Netflix’s most hotly anticipated releases of the year. Returning cast members include Victoria Pedretti, Henry Thomas Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Kate Siegel. Here’s to hoping this series brings us another great season of television that balances terror and heart. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. “Hubie Halloween” (2020) Netflix: October 7th, 2020 “Schitt’s Creek” (2015-20) season 6 Netflix: October 7th, 2020 “Truth Seekers” (2020-) Prime Video: October 1st, 2020 “50 States of Fright” (2020-) season 2 Quibi: October 1st, 2020 “Emily in Paris” (2020-) Netflix: October 21st, 2020

#1: The Mandalorian (2019-) season 2

Also in:

Every Single Disney Release in 2020

Disney+: October 30th, 2020 In 2019, the world fell in love. Yes, everyone fell head over heels for the Child (aka Baby Yoda), but also with this series itself. The first live action Star Wars tv show had a lot riding on it, but sure enough, it’s proven to be the Disney streaming service’s biggest hit to date. This month has a lot of Halloween-centric content, but the hype surrounding Mando’s return is so massive that it easily beats out all the spooky competition. Not only are we being reunited with Din Djarin and his ward, but they’re joined by a number of high profile Star Wars characters, including Ahsoka Tano and Boba Fett. Mark it in your calendars, this season premiere is not to be missed!
