Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at the renewed controversy surrounding Jared Leto – breaking down the recent allegations that have been levied against him, past accusations, his other controversies, and what happens next. Warning, certain information contains distressing details.

The Latest Claims

For years, Jared Leto's name has been surrounded by rumors and online speculation, but a new documentary has brought those conversations back into the spotlight in a much more serious way. In late July 2026, the BBC released “Jared Leto: Hollywood's Dark Secret.” The investigative documentary features allegations from multiple women who claim they experienced inappropriate or abusive behavior involving the actor and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman. The women describe a range of alleged experiences between the years 2002 and 2016, including claims of inappropriate communication, unwanted advances, and encounters they say crossed personal and legal boundaries. Among those featured, one accuser alleges Leto assaulted her in a motel bathroom when she was 17, another claims he had relations with her while she was under the age of consent, a third describes receiving repeated explicit phone calls when she was 16, and another alleges that Leto made threatening remarks during an encounter when she was 19. The documentary also features accounts from former associates and colleagues connected to Thirty Seconds to Mars, who describe concerns about Leto's interactions with young female fans. Following the documentary's release, Leto denied all allegations through a spokesperson, stating, in part, "These claims are absolutely and categorically false." With the documentary bringing together accusations spanning more than a decade, the controversy has placed renewed attention on a series of claims that have followed Leto for years. Which brings us too…

Past Allegations

While the 2026 documentary generated new headlines, concerns surrounding Jared Leto's interactions with younger women have circulated for years. Back in 2005, an anonymous source quoted by the New York Post claimed Leto had a habit of messaging much younger girls, describing the behavior as "really kind of creepy." Though the claim received attention online, no formal accusations emerged at the time. Over the years, similar rumors continued to surface, occasionally receiving acknowledgment from other celebrities. In 2018, actor Dylan Sprouse posted a now-famous tweet asking, "Now that you've slid into the DMs of every female model aged 18-25, what would you say your success rate is?" Director James Gunn then replied in a since-deleted post saying, "He starts at 18 on the Internet?" Although both comments fueled more online speculation, neither offered firsthand allegations of misconduct. Then, in June 2025, an extensive investigation by the digital weekly newsmagazine Air Mail saw nine women - including models, aspiring performers, and DJ Allie Teilz - accuse Leto of harassment, coercive behavior, and inappropriate conduct. Several alleged that they were underage when they first encountered him, claiming he used his celebrity status to blur personal boundaries and make unwanted advances. Meanwhile, Leto's representatives categorically denied every allegation, calling them false and defamatory while disputing specific claims individually.

Other Controversies

Even without these allegations, Jared Leto already stood as one of Hollywood's most polarizing figures. Much of that reputation came from his famously intense approach to method acting. While preparing to play the Joker in “Suicide Squad,” he reportedly remained in character off-camera and sent, let’s just call them “unusual”, gifts to his co-stars. He also gained attention for his physical transformations, including gaining more than 60 pounds to play Mark David Chapman in “Chapter 27,” and losing significant weight for his Oscar-winning role in “Dallas Buyers Club.” Years later, his commitment to “Morbius” drew similar attention when reports claimed he used crutches and a wheelchair between takes to stay in character as the physically impaired title character, which allegedly caused delays during production. Outside acting, Leto drew criticism over “Mars Island,” an immersive retreat hosted by Thirty Seconds to Mars that invited fans to spend several days with the band at a luxury destination. Photos, which showed attendees dressed almost entirely in white, led countless social media users to compare the experience to a cult. Leto embraced the claim by posting "Yes, this is a cult" online. Add in his eccentric fashion choices, unhinged interviews, bizarre publicity stunts and Leto gradually became one of the internet's most discussed public figures.

What Happens Next?

As the controversy surrounding Jared Leto continues to unfold, one major question remains: what happens next? Unlike some recent high-profile celebrity scandals, this situation has not resulted in an arrest, criminal charges, or a public trial. As of this publishing, Leto has not been charged with a crime or publicly identified as the subject of a criminal investigation related to these allegations. However, the absence of criminal charges does not end the public conversation, as Hollywood has increasingly seen careers affected by damning allegations alone. Professionally, Leto's career has remained active despite the controversy. In fact, he has continued taking on major projects - including starring in Disney’s “Tron: Ares” and appearing in the live-action adaptation of “Masters of the Universe,” where he portrayed the legendary main villain Skeletor. While no concrete next movie has been formally scheduled (so far) there have also been no major announcements that studios have cut ties with him. That said, Hollywood's response to allegations of misconduct has evolved significantly in the years since the rise of the #MeToo movement. Studios, streamers, and brands as a whole now often consider public reaction alongside legal outcomes - meaning controversy alone can impact a performer’s opportunities. For Leto, what happens next could depend on several factors, including whether additional allegations emerge, and whether any legal developments occur. Until then, the controversy remains ongoing.
