10 Times Actors Were Clearly Unprepared for a Role

Jared Leto

To say that Jared Leto had some pretty big boots to fill in the role of the Joker would be putting it lightly. From the early days of Cesar Romero to Jack Nicholson, and, of course, Heath Ledger, each actor has brought something truly unique to Batman’s primary antagonist. For Leto, he decided to engage in some pretty heavy immersion and method acting, although the results never went beyond the surface level. On screen, Leto was criticised for his shallow performance in a movie that was far too on-the-nose for many to enjoy. The fact that editing choices limited his role didn’t help, but overall, his Joker never made a lasting impact.

George Clooney

Nobody can deny that George Clooney is an excellent actor and a great leading man. That said, even the mighty Laurence Olivier would have struggled to make Joel Schumacher’s “Batman & Robin” anything other than a disaster. The film was widely panned for its bizarre and campy style, terrible dialogue, and awful plot. Clooney himself has openly admitted that he regrets taking part in the film. His Bruce Wayne was at odds with the rest of the movie from the get-go, leading to a tonal whiplash that left several characters feeling like they were acting in different films. You can’t blame George Clooney entirely, but his performance certainly didn’t help.

Denise Richards

For as much as people like to compare the various actors who have portrayed James Bond over the years, the ‘Bond girl’ role has an even wider array of performances to sift through. Most fans of the franchise would agree that Denise Richards’ portrayal of Dr Christmas Jones is in contention for the single worst in the series’ history. The character, a nuclear physicist, required a blend of scientific authority and action competence that critics felt was not fully supported by the performance. She just didn’t bring enough credibility to the table, resulting in a highly unconvincing performance that pulled many viewers out of the experience. Her limited acting range simply made her a bad fit for this role, and the critics noticed!

Jack Black

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a comedic actor trying their hand at a serious role - and vice versa. However, it often happens that an actor’s limited range can become all too clear when they bite off more than they can chew. For Jack Black, he was already contending with the fact that his identity was so well established when he took a role in “King Kong”. Audiences struggled to separate him from the larger-than-life comedic persona he was already known for. Despite his research and dedication, he struggled to play the role of Carl Denham with any depth or ambiguity, resulting in a performance that always seemed a little out of his reach.

Jamie Dornan

There might not be a more divisive series of books to emerge in the twenty-first century than E. L. James’ “Fifty Shades” trilogy. Those of you who have read the source material know that the character of Christian Grey is supposed to project a certain menace, magnetism, and overall contradiction. Although the novels have their fair share of detractors, they did present a character who was clearly quite complicated. When Jamie Dornan got the role, he turned in a performance that lacked any of the depth that the author envisioned. Sure, the movie overall was a critical flop, but Dornan seemed to struggle to bring any subtlety to his performance, leading to a flat and uninspiring end product.

Kevin Hart

Few big-budget films this decade have been as widely panned as Eli Roth’s video-game adaptation “Borderlands”. With that came some pretty heavy criticism for all of the actors attached to it, but none more so than Kevin Hart. The film required a certain tone from the outset, which makes us wonder why Hart was chosen in the first place. Sure, Hart himself made it clear that getting to know the video game and its characters played a huge part in his preparation. In practice, however, it didn’t seem like the comedian was immersing himself in the role whatsoever. Many fans and critics just saw Kevin Hart playing Kevin Hart, with no care given to what the film itself might actually need.

Pierce Brosnan

It was hard not to feel sorry for Pierce Brosnan after hearing some of the reviews for his singing performance in “Mamma Mia!” in 2008. Those descriptions included that he sounded like a “water buffalo”, “a braying donkey”, and a “wounded raccoon” while trying to deliver ABBA’s tricky vocal lines. Nobody can doubt his leading man acting chops, but Brosnan himself admitted that the idea of singing on-screen terrified him. He underwent basic vocal training in the lead-up to the film, but in the end, he just couldn’t pull it off.

Elizabeth Berkley

Managing a transition between teen stardom and more mature roles is a tricky thing to pull off well. For “Saved By the Bell” star Elizabeth Berkley, instead of dipping her toe into the water first, she dived headfirst into the extremely risqué and controversial Paul Verhoeven film, “Showgirls”. She reportedly committed intensely to the physical aspects of the role, including dance training and choreography work. When it came to the need for a more nuanced lead performance, Berkley came off as incredibly one-note. She was nominated and eventually won the Golden Raspberry award that year for the single worst performance of 1995.

Colin Farrell

With the legendary Oliver Stone in the director’s chair, and one of history’s greatest leaders as its subject, film fans were naturally quite excited about the prospect of 2004’s “Alexander”. Colin Farrell also seemed like the right lead actor to give this iconic historical figure the gravitas he needed. In reality, the film just never took off. While Alexander the Great was renowned for being as charismatic as any man who ever walked this planet, Farrell just couldn’t get out of second gear. The film itself is regarded as one of modern cinema’s biggest critical disappointments, but for as much as that wasn’t entirely Farrell’s fault, his performance certainly didn't help.

Marlon Brando

By the time the later years of Marlon Brando’s career came around, he was a far cry from the trailblazer who burst onto the scene in the 1950s. “The Island of Dr Moreau” is often cited as one of the most chaotic and troublesome film productions of all-time for a myriad of reasons. Right at the centre of it, though, was Brando, who was utterly uninterested in the script, frequently relying on cue cards and improvisation rather than rehearsing his lines. In his older age, Brando became increasingly eccentric, making changes to his character and his environment without any discussion or deliberation. Brando had checked out, and this already-troubled production suffered as a result.
