Superhero Origins: Havok
He is the estranged brother of Cyclops, and is capable of producing a devastating beam of plasma energy from his chest. Welcome to Watchmojo.com, and today we will explore the origins of Havok.
As with most comic book characters, there are often re-imaginings and different versions to a character’s past. We have chosen to primarily follow the storyline, which unfolded in 1963’s “Uncanny X-Men” #54, and was expanded upon in X-men Origins: Cyclops.
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Alex Summers is the younger brother of Scott Summers, otherwise known as Cyclops, and the son of a United States Air Force Major and test pilot.
Alex’s chaotic life began when he was still a young boy. At that time, his family was flying back from a vacation in a private plane, when they came under attack by a scout ship of the intergalactic Shi’ar Empire. With the plane on fire, Alex’s mother pushed the brothers out with the only available parachute.
Landing without injury, Alex was sent to an orphanage in Omaha, Nebraska, while his brother slipped into a coma due to hitting his head on the ground.
Adopted by a family that had lost their own son in a car accident, Alex eventually went on to study and earn a degree in Geophysics. It was at this time that he met his brother Scott, otherwise known as Cyclops, and the X-Men, after they had tracked him down.
Following this short-lived reunion, Alex was captured by the school’s professor of archeology, who revealed himself to be the The Living Pharaoh. As it turned out, this villain had discovered Alex’s dormant power to absorb cosmic energy through a psychic link.
Furthermore, he discovered that Alex’s ability to tap into cosmic energy counterbalanced his own. As a result, the Pharaoh took Alex to his lab in Egypt, and locked him in a shielded cell. This blocked Alex’s absorption of the power source, causing his captor to become supercharged, and transform into The Living Monolith, a gigantic mutant with unlimited cosmic power.
Invincible to the X-men team who had arrived to rescue their fellow mutant, Alex saved the day when he managed to free himself from his cell. This resulted in the instant dissipation of the Monolith’s enhanced mutant powers.
It was at this point that Cyclops told him that he is a mutant. In shock, and realizing that his power over cosmic energy was unlimited and extremely dangerous to others, Alex fled into the Egyptian desert.
There, he was captured by a mutant-seeking robot Sentinel, and brought to its commander Larry Trask. Given a costume that would help monitor and control his powers, and code-named Havok, he was coerced into helping round up the world’s mutant population.
When the X-Men arrived on the scene, he was injured during their ensuing battle with Trask’s legion of Sentinels. Taken for treatment, the team later helped Alex learn to control his mutant powers. Eventually, he became a formidable force for good, with the desire to hunt down the aliens responsible for the loss of his parents.
A long-time staple of the X-Men universe, Havok has undergone several major changes over the years. This is most apparently showcased with his darker role in the Ultimate X-Men comic series, and his live-action film debut in 2011’s X-Men First Class. Within these newer appearances, he has come to be retconned as Cyclop’s older brother.
