Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we’re counting down 10 Super Mario theories that might actually be true. For this list, we’ll be looking at the diverse and wacky world of Super Mario, diving into some off-the-wall theories that could hold some weight for fans. Be sure to come up with your own silly Super Mario theories and share them in the comments section below, and also let us know which of the ones in this video might just be true!
Okay, this is definitely one of the darkest theories out there and does somewhat fall into the conspiracy theory realm; however, you can’t deny that it’s quite interesting. So, in Super Mario 64 there’s the notorious “haunted piano” jumpscare in Big Boo’s Haunt. Well, what if the reason the piano is haunted is because Luigi’s corpse is actually stuffed inside of it? This dark theory came about because Luigi is nowhere to be found in Super Mario 64, leading many to believe that he had an untimely demise and has been hidden or stuffed in this piano to avoid questions. Fans speculate that the statue in the fountain of the courtyard outside the level is actually a gravestone for Luigi. While there’s really no proof of any of this, hence the conspiracy disclaimer, it’s none-the-less going to up the spook factor when Mario encounters this haunted piano.
Poor Shy Guys, they really get the short end of the stick, typically being relegated to baddies in many Mario games. It’s only in games like Mario Party and Mario Kart where you actually get to play as these frankly terrifying characters from the series. Each time you see a Shy Guy in a Mario game, you might ask yourself: why in tarnation do they always wear those creepy masks? Well the theory points to the fact that Shy Guys are actually products of genetic experimentation and other scientific shenanigans that leave them as sort of maligned monstrosities, especially if anyone sees them without one of their infamous masks. Just ask Luigi, he has encountered a moment like this in Mario Power Tennis. Now, it makes sense Shy Guys are strange, mostly because they didn’t actually originate from a Mario game, but instead are a product of the Japan-only Doki Doki Panic that later turned into Super Mario Bros. 2.
Could the beloved Princess Peach actually be the evil one?! She’s often seen as a damsel in distress, but this could all be a master plan for her to assume all power over and manipulate the Mushroom Kingdom. We always see Peach as the victim, getting caught up in Bowser’s nefarious shenanigans, getting saved by Mario, and acting all innocent, but we never see things from Bowser’s point of view. If you buy into the idea that all Super Mario games are stage plays, a deeper truth could point to the fact that Princess Peach is actually the villain of the Super Mario series, using these plays as propaganda to slander Bowser and paint herself in a better light. What if, in fact, Peach wants to actually rule over all of the Koopa Kingdom and will do whatever it takes? It’s certainly a theory to ponder.
If you don’t buy the theory that Peach is evil, maybe this one will seem more plausible. To keep this PG, let’s just say that Princess Peach doesn’t do much to stop herself from getting captured all throughout the Super Mario franchise. Perhaps she even looks forward to these events since it puts her in the limelight to bask in the glow of Bowser and Mario’s toxic love affair with the seemingly innocent princess. Heck, there’s a theory out there that Princess Peach might actually secretly be in love with Bowser which might lead to their very common “meetings”. This could also explain the popular theory that Peach is actually Bowser Jr.’s mother.
Yep, you heard that right. Yoshi could actually just be a long-forgotten or thrown out Pokemon, one who was scooped up by the Super Mario series to give this lovable dinosaur its rightful place in the pantheon of memorable Nintendo characters. It’s no surprise that Nintendo loves blending their properties together. I mean come on, look at Super Smash Bros. The facts actually point to Yoshi directly being a Pokemon given the eggs he comes out of and that he only says his name, much like most Pokemon. Plus, his quirky and cartoony demeanor and strong abilities directly line up with other Pokemon.
At this point in the super long-running Mario series, it’s no surprise that Mario and Peach share a common loving attraction with each other, something that becomes omnipresent in the Super Mario Bros. movie from 2023. However, stepping back in time a bit, there’s a popular theory out there that leads to a baby…Mario and Peach’s baby. Who is that baby, you might ask? Well, it’s supposedly none other than Rosalina, first shown off and made popular in Super Mario Galaxy. The lore of Super Mario Galaxy that surrounds Rosalina, the Lumas, and the Comet Observatory point to a time long ago where the sorceress was raised by a loving mother and father and a second brother who just so happened to live with them. Hmmmm, this sounds more and more like Mario, Peach, and Luigi, am I right? If all that wasn’t enough, Rosalina might even be from the future and built a time-travelling device to reach the current Mario galaxy.
What if Bowser and Mario were actually good buddies? What if the maligned Bowser was actually a good guy? What if Bowser is meant to be a benevolent ruler of the Koopa Kingdom? There’s certainly some proof of this out there. Many long-time Super Mario series fans are well aware of the dastardly magician and sorcerer, Kamek. This theory points to the fact that Kamek could actually be a master manipulator, using Bowser for his own devious schemes, warping his mind, and making him look evil on the surface. In reality, Bowser might just want to do what’s right, which is why we often see him and Mario as chums from time to time. And, to bring it up again, Bowser’s clear love for Princess Peach certainly doesn’t seem evil, even if it does border on an unhealthy obsession.
Gosh, I love this one. So, we all know Wario and Waluigi, right? Most of us just think of these two separate characters as just that, separate Mario universe characters. However, what if I told you that Wario and Waluigi are actually just misunderstood, passionate, and over-to-top superfans of Mario and Luigi, respectively. Apart from the clothes they both don to the upside-down or backwards letters for “W” and “L,” this theory is certainly in the realm of possibility. Wario and Waluigi are oftentimes seen as bad guys but perhaps it’s because they are just so passionate and they want to use their fan power to help Mario and pals, even though it might not always work out as intended for the duo.
Dr. Mario from the famous Dr. Mario games is just the same old Mario but dressing up as a doctor, right? Perhaps not. What if Dr. Mario was actually the third brother of Mario and Luigi, one who eschewed the whole Mushroom Kingdom shenanigans in order to pursue a medical degree, one distinguishing him as a doctor, Dr. Mario in fact. Sure, this might be a stretch, but a theory points to how the doctor version of Mario looks slightly different, he isn’t as versed in the Mushroom Kingdom world, and his skills are very specific to his games.
So, this is actually one of the more recent and popular theories that suggest that the Mario we see in the 2023 Super Mario Bros. movie isn’t actually the real Mario we have all come to know and love over the decades. The theory is certainly a bit vague when it comes to details but it leads us to believe that the quote, unquote “real Mario” has been taken away somewhere, has been lost to time, or has been captured, instead replaced by this counterfeit Mario who sounds slight off, looks a bit daft in comparison to his other self, and isn’t at all familiar with the Mushroom Kingdom when first venturing there through the New York City sewers. Sure, this could all just be part of a plot refresh for Mario and pals, but it will make you wonder the next time you watch the movie. Plus, Mario and Luigi even make a small joke in regards to their Italian accent and if it’s “too much.” Interesting indeed.

“Monstrous Shy Guys”
Poor Shy Guys, they really get the short end of the stick, typically being relegated to baddies in many Mario games. It’s only in games like Mario Party and Mario Kart where you actually get to play as these frankly terrifying characters from the series. “Peach Might Be Evil”
“She Got Captured…Again”
“Yoshi is a Pokémon”

“Bowser’s Actually a Good Guy”
What if Bowser and Mario were actually good buddies? What if the maligned Bowser was actually a good guy? What if Bowser is meant to be a benevolent ruler of the Koopa Kingdom? There’s certainly some proof of this out there. Many long-time Super Mario series fans are well aware of the dastardly magician and sorcerer, Kamek. “The Over-the-top Fan”
Gosh, I love this one. So, we all know Wario and Waluigi, right? Most of us just think of these two separate characters as just that, separate Mario universe characters. “The Third Brother”
