Kratos' Fists

The 10 WORST Things to Happen to Kratos

Various Sometimes it’s best to rely on good old fisticuffs. Kratos rarely uses brute strength during the Greek Saga, but favors brawling in the Nordic storyline. His fighting skills are evident when it’s all about punching down his enemies. Kratos’ rage unlocks additional abilities where hand-to-hand combat is concerned. Players who’ve mastered this fighting style can leave carnage in their wake, as Kratos doesn’t hold back when he’s unleashed. While solely relying on fists doesn’t offer much visual variety, it can be satisfying to win this way after a hard-fought battle. Match-ups against bosses like Baldur best display just how dangerous Kratos can be when he lets his fists do the talking.

Claws of Hades

“God of War III” (2010) As the name goes, this pair of claws originally belong to the God of the Underworld. Hades uses them to great effect against the Titans in “God of War II,” and fans get to try them out in the sequel. Kratos nabs the claws during his boss fight with Hades, using them to slay his foe for good. While the basic functionality of the claws is similar to the Blades of Chaos, Kratos can use the claws to summon the souls of deceased monsters and attack his enemies. The claws offer greater mobility in gameplay, as dodging is quicker. This makes them a good option for those who want slick, fast-paced gameplay. The only downside is the claws’ lack of firepower compared to the rest of his arsenal.

Talon Bow

“God of War” (2018) & “God of War Ragnarök” (2022) Mastering the Talon Bow helps Atreus become a hero in his own right. Kratos’ son uses this weapon to provide support to his father’s battles. The bow also illustrates Atreus’ character development, as its attacks get stronger the more Atreus hones his skills. The Talon Bow’s main appeal comes from the different elements imbued within it. Depending on the requirement, Kratos can ask his son to shoot down targets that aid their journey. Of course, most fans see it as more of an add-on compared to other items in the heroes’ arsenal. But it becomes the signature tool in Atreus’ arsenal, making the Talon Bow one of the most plot-relevant weapons in the series.

Gauntlet of Zeus

“God of War: Chains of Olympus” (2008) Who needs Pandora’s Box when you’ve got a gauntlet that can slay a god? The PSP “God of War” spin-off doesn’t have many strong weapons, but this one is a great exception. Kratos acquires the gauntlet late in the game, which empowers him to defeat “Chains of Olympus’” toughest foes. The Gauntlet of Zeus can break through just about anything, landing crushing blows to pulverize its targets. It also breaks apart many obstacles in the environment, establishing it as the go-to weapon once it’s acquired. The lack of combos doesn’t make it a favorite for those who want to use a diversified move set. However, the Gauntlet is an absolute necessity to take down enemies like Charon and Persophone. It’s no wonder why the gods reclaimed the weapon from Kratos considering just how powerful he became with it.

Blade of Artemis

Malenia Blade of Miquella's Origin Story | Elden Ring

“God of War” (2005) & “God of War: Betrayal” (2007) Enemy swarms can be a problem in the first “God of War,” and the Blade of Artemis is the perfect solution. This weapon puts the “hack” in “hack-and-slash,” as players are encouraged to massacre hordes of enemies with it. What the blade lacks in range, it makes up in power. Enemy defenses can be broken with violent jabs and slashes, and combo moves make it even deadlier. It’s also aesthetically pleasing, as the blade takes on a slicker look the more it’s upgraded. It also becomes easier to use, allowing players to attack at a quicker pace. With so many foes to defeat, the Blade of Artemis is designed to let players cut loose and enjoy “God of War’s” combat mechanics.

Nemean Cestus

“God of War III” (2010) Much like the Blade of Artemis and Gauntlet of Zeus, the Nemean Cestus is created to deliver sheer power. Greater capacity for ranged combat makes it slightly better than the other two, though. The pair of gauntlets contain extendable chains, making it possible to launch attacks from a distance. They also serve a greater purpose within the narrative since the gauntlets are the only thing capable of surpassing the Onyx rock armor. Kratos is able to break through everything from shields, walls, and armor once he’s acquired them, with bosses like Hercules and the Skorpius monster falling to its might. While they can be limiting in terms of mobility, the gauntlets pack too big a punch to ignore.

Draupnir Spear

“God of War Ragnarök” (2022) This weapon is fashioned specifically to battle Heimdall and remove him as a threat. But the Draupnir Spear also doubles as a worthy weapon to battle all sorts of enemies. Capable of sending out concussive blasts with piercing accuracy, the spear’s value gets even higher after its magical abilities are upgraded. The ability to multiply itself and grant Kratos infinite throws gives the Draupnir Spear another distinctive edge. Handling the weapon feels unique compared to others in the Nordic landscape, so using the Draupnir Spear offers more gameplay variety. Within the story, Kratos’ use of the spear signifies his turn for the better, whilst making a call back to his time as a Spartan.

Blade of Olympus

Origin Story: Mortal Kombat's Sonya Blade!

“God of War II” (2007) & “God of War III” (2010) When it comes to the series’ overarching story, there’s never been a weapon stronger than this one. Created by Zeus, the Blade of Olympus was used to end the Great War between the Gods and the Titans. It ends up as Kratos’ primary means of revenge against the Ruler of Olympus as well. Players can use it during bonus mode in “God of War II,” where its great power doles out near-instant kills. “God of War III” switches use of the blade as part of Kratos’ rage, serving as a power-up to quickly destroy enemies. Both games establish it as the ultimate weapon to possess, as Kratos wields it when he defeats Zeus for good.

Leviathan Axe

“God of War” (2018) & “God of War Ragnarök” (2022) Serving as Kratos’ primary weapon after leaving the Greek world, the Leviathan Axe also signals the change in his personality. The axe represents Kratos’ intention to move away from his destructive tendencies, as the weapon is far less chaotic than others he’s possessed. The Leviathan Axe has a good balance between short and long-range attacks, as Kratos can fling it toward his enemies and summon it back for close-combat purposes. Imbuing it with elemental powers boosts the axe’s prowess, empowering Kratos to face tougher enemies and bosses. Its popularity has propelled the Leviathan Axe to become the signature weapon of “God of War’s” Nordic saga.

Blades of Chaos

Various The Blades of Chaos are synonymous with the “God of War” brand. Whether it’s the original blades or alternatives like the Blades of Athena or Exile, Kratos has donned the weapons in every game so far. Bound to Kratos’ flesh, these chains boast the highest kill count. Watching the blades in action is a thing of beauty, as Kratos effortlessly completes incredible moves with devastating impact. From long-ranged attacks to powerful blows and combos, the sheer variety they offer makes them a weapon of the highest quality. The blades have the most relevance to Kratos’ characterization, as wielding them signaled his turn into the Ghost of Sparta. The Nordic Saga couldn’t resist bringing them back, albeit with revamped gameplay mechanics. But their destructive potential remains high as ever.
