He began his rise through the political sphere as a County Court judge in 1922, and he was eventually elected to the U.S. Senate. Truman rose to national prominence in that position, and by 1944 he was chosen as Franklin Delano Roosevelt's new vice presidential candidate. However, Truman only served a short time as VP because FDR died not long after his reelection. Though Truman had the presidency thrust upon him, he led his country through trying times that included the end of WWII and the expansion of communism.
