What Your FAVORITE Metal Gear Solid Game Says About YOU

Metal Gear (1987)

Congratulations, you're a baby of the 80s. Metal Gear was the first entry in the series that has spanned over 30 years, and considering this your favourite says a LOT about a person. You love top down gameplay, and have a lot of love for the classics of the NES era. There's nothing youd love more than a lovely soft beanbag, a CRT TV, a rainy day, and a shag carpet. You don't care so much for the story of Metal Gear, youre all about the gameplay. Or, on the flip side of the coin, you care SO much for the story that you HAVE to experience every single element of this series. I think I love you... Run away with me.

Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990)

Woah woah woah, I didnt realise we were hanging out with a big f**king deal over here. If you consider the lesser played, lesser appreciated second entry in the Metal Gear game to be your favourite of the series, you LOVE a challenge. You don't particularly care if it's a grind, or if it takes all of your focus, you enjoy keeping your brain active by taking on games that aren't made intentionally hard, but just made hard because of the tools available to developers and gamers at the time. You still enjoy the late 80s early 90s classics, but with a twist of difficulty on top. I bet you still play Battletoads on the NES once a year, ya little devil.

Metal Gear Solid (1998)

You are the greatest human being who ever lived, and dont let anyone tell you otherwise. Guess what? If this one is your fav, you and I will get along just fine. You are a child of the 90s with a lot of love and respect for the late 90s era of gaming, and possibly most of your beloved gaming memories took place on the PS1. With a love for storytelling, you don't care about graphics, you just care about rich tales, spoken by quality actors. You enjoy the challenge of the fifth generation of gaming, and even if that challenge has become second nature, you still find a lot of comfort in replaying classics that fill you with nostalgia. You probably also have a favourite TV series on repeat in your house. What is it? The Office? You bloody would.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001)

If Metal Gear Solid 2 and Raiden are more your speed, you and my BROTHER would probably get along... You and me, wed have an unspoken respect, like a cop and a crook silently nodding at each other across a smokey diner, as if to say were not so different, you and I. Speaking of loving MGS2, you're cooked. You don't mind when a game gets a little bit out there, as long as the gameplay is really solid. You might consider yourself a bit of an intellectual, finding stories that are artsy, or a little off beat to be a more full experience. You like a story that challenges the mind and leaves room for interpretation, you dont need everything explained in detail. You're probably an anime fan, not finding over-acting and melodrama cringe, and you LOVE an experience that has a good amount of replayability. If you had the opportunity, you'd probably cosplay as an MGS character at the next available date. Dont lie to me, go get your bandana. Nerd.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004)

What's up, you gritty king. Do you enjoy a bit of roleplay? I know you do, you saucy minx. If your favourite game was MGS3, you're probably the exact opposite of an MGS2 fan To an extent, we're all still Kojima fanboys. Some of us love PT, and some of us love Death Stranding - whos to say who is correct? You enjoy a bit of variety, and hate being locked into linear experiences. If there are multiple ways to go about something, you want to try them all, though ultimately, stealth is probably your favourite option. You enjoy the war tales of yesteryear, and love your video game protagonists to be gruff, tough, and mean. Im gonna take a swing here and say youve got a real romantic side - you're a big softy, dont lie. Replayability matters to you, and you thoroughly enjoy pushing yourself through every difficulty option that's available.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots (2008)

You've got a hell of a lot of time on your hands. If you love MGS4, your second favourite game is probably MGS1, and if you love MGS1, your second favourite game is probably MGS4, and if you loved MGS3, you probably think MGS4 is where Kojima starting going off the deep end of self fart sniffing. With a heavy respect for the PS3, you love a story that sticks with you, and you don't complain when a bit of fan service is thrown in, even if this fan service doesnt particularly serve the goal of the overall narrative. This being said, you're probably a big Marvel fan too, and may have audibly squealed when Toby Maguire showed up in No Way Home. Customisation and personal choice are a BIG must for you in games, and most importantly, you have NO problem enjoying a deep and lengthy narrative. Guess who your favourite Metal Gear Solid character is? I'll answer for you, it's Solid Snake.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (2010)

Go off your portable, prince. This might be a big swing, and I'm probably gonna get this wrong for 60% of you... But I think you loved South Park as a kid. Comment if I nailed it. Peace Walker returns us to the familiar world of MGS3, but with a big difference: you have to be a PSP kid. You (and let me say this extra loud for the people in the back) could not give a flying f*** about story. You are a gameplay fiend, and probably a little bit weird. You preferred Vice City stories over Vice City. You preferred Crisis Core over FF7, and you preferred Peace Walker over MGS3. You don't need much, you need a mission, some customisation, and then a drop-in drop-out battle. Don't waste this person's time, just get them to the good stuff.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance" (2013)

Alright, you Raiden fanboy, take this with a grain of salt, because I havent actually met that many of you. You might not even be THAT big of a Metal Gear fan. In fact, this may well have been the only Metal Gear game you've ever played... But damn you enjoyed it. I would argue you don't really care for that many of the games. You entered the series here, and it's possible that's where you stopped. Now alternatively, theres another side version of the Metal Gear Rising lover. You could actually be a huge lore expert, making sure you experience every side of this series, and don't let anything slip by you. You've got Reddit, and I bet you use it every day. Salutations my friend, and stay sober.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (2014) & Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015)

Im combining these two games into one entry, because they both say the same thing about you: Gameplay is it. You would rather skip a cutscene just to get to the meat of a game, and if a game has plenty of meat, you're there. You can't stand linear experiences, and if you're not able to go through a mission, level, or quest at least 25 different ways, then it's not worth your time. Customisation. Is. Everything. And you want to see just how far you can push the mechanics of any game you experience. You're also probably a funny little guy. Aren't ya? You lil comedian. Making enemies float away with a perfectly placed Fulton recovery. I bet your friends think you're a blast. Get out of here, scamp.

Metal Gear Survive (2018)

Heres the philosophy of the average person whose favourite Metal Gear game is Metal Gear Survive: Why on earth would I listen to a review? If I think a game is gonna be up my alley, Im not gonna let some two-bit gaming journalist tell me that it isn't for me. Im gonna take my 80 bucks, and go buy the damn game. If you loved this game, you're a contrarian, but you're also willing to give everything a chance. Which is commendable. That being said, you're wrong about this game. Byeeeeee.
