Top 10 Korean Romantic Comedy Movies

The journey of falling in love should be filled with laughs, just like these movies! Welcome to MsMojo and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Korean Romantic Comedy Movies.

For this list, we’re looking strictly at romantic comedy feature films, so we won’t be including TV programs.

#10: “My Tutor Friend” (2003)

Who knew tutoring could be so fun? Based on the real experiences of a college girl who tutored a high schooler that had been held back several times, “My Tutor Friend” follows the studious Su-wan as she helps Ji-hoon, a spoiled rich kid, pass his classes. Of course their relationship evolves to become more than a strictly student/teacher one as the two main characters learn to see past their original perceptions of each other and fall in love. The movie was a success and later had a sequel that didn’t follow the same characters, but had a similar storyline.

#9: “Whatcha Wearin?’” (2012)

Sometimes true love is one mis-dialed number away! After Yoon Jung accidentally calls the wrong number when meaning to hit up her boyfriend, she connects with Hyun Seung and the two have phone sex. Eventually, their phone conversations become intimate in a different way, as they delve deeper into each other’s personal lives and begin building a connection. What sounds like a completely awkward real world situation makes for a highly entertaining, over-the-top rom-com. Upon release, the spicy flick became the fasted rated-19 rom-com to make a million admissions in only a 10 day period.

#8: “100 Days with Mr. Arrogant” (2004)

If this movie teaches you one thing, it’s be careful who you kick garbage at: you might just fall in love with them. When Ha-Yeong, a down on her luck and recently dumped high school girl, kicks a soda can, it accidentally hits Hyung-Jun, a rich playboy, in the head and makes him scratch his fancy car. Unable to pay for the damage, Ha-Yeong instead agrees to act as Hyung-Jun’s servant for 100 days. The two leads have undeniable chemistry and audiences can see them falling in love from a mile away, but that doesn’t make this movie any less fun to watch!

#7: “Penny Pinchers” (2011)

When frugal Gu Hong-sil meets broke playboy Chun Ji-woong, the sparks fly in this “opposites attract” story. Behind on his rent and out of money from his mom, Ji-woong takes up with Hong-sil after she promises to help him learn how to make money. In reality, though, she’s really just using him for a money making scheme of her own. While they start off with their own agendas, they eventually realize both the true value of money, and of love. “Penny Pinchers”’ winning combination of hilarious gags and heartwarming moments definitely makes it worth the price of admission.

#6: “Love 911” (2012)

Even though it deals with some pretty heavy topics like dead spouses and medical malpractice, “Love 911” is a delightful gem of a movie with many laughs along the way. When Mi-soo, a serious doctor, has to convince recent widower and rescue firefighter, Kang-li, to testify on her behalf in court, she tries to win his favor by romancing him. He sees past her act and these two have a captivating “will they, won’t they?” back and forth pull throughout the film. Their easy rapport is exciting to watch, and Han Hyo-joo’s performance as Mi-soo earned her a Best Actress nomination at the 49th Baeksang Arts Awards.

#5: “Windstruck” (2004)

Get ready for some feels with this one. “Windstruck” follows Officer Yeo Kyung-jin, a young cop who unexpectedly gets involved with Go Myung-woo, a man she initially suspects of being a thief. Luckily for us, her initial adversarial feelings for Myung-woo gradually turn romantic, and the two fall in love while fighting crime and facing off with Korean gangsters and the Russian mafia. The movie has a supernatural twist in the second half, but ultimately gives the message that once you find true love, you’re never alone.

#4: “Spellbound” (2011)

Horror romantic comedy isn’t really a genre that’s popular in the US, but this movie will convince you it should be! Written and directed Hwang In-ho in his directorial debut, this charming genre bender follows the story of Jo-goo, a street magician, who in a chance encounter meets Yeo-ri, a young woman plagued with the pesky curse of seeing ghosts. With such an unorthodox premise, their story is a great mix of the supernatural and the everyday, and adds a healthy does of magic to the usual rom-com formula.

#3: “My Little Bride” (2004)

Most high school students are worried about their homework and exams, not hiding their secret marriages! But that’s the premise of “My Little Bride,” a remake of the popular Hong Kong movie, “My Wife Is 18.” After being influenced by a pact their grandfather’s made to each other during the Korean War, high school student Bo-eun marries Sang-min, an older college guy with a reputation for womanizing. The journey of watching these two fall for each other offers some major laughs as well as some heartfelt declarations of love.

#2: “200 Pounds Beauty” (2006)

Based on the Japanese manga “Kanna’s Big Success!”, this movie tells the story of Hanna, an overweight woman who undergoes a drastic full-body makeover to become a major pop star. While the plot sounds a little out there, the real message of this zany movie is that knowing your self worth is important and true talent can come in different shapes and sizes. Hanna’s journey connected with audiences and became the third best-selling movie released in Korea in 2006. It also earned numerous Best Actress awards and nominations for Kim Ah-joong, the film’s main star.

Before we unveil our number one pick, here are a few honorable mentions:

“Scandal Makers” (2008)

“Seducing Mr. Perfect” (2006)

“Hot Young Bloods” (2014)

#1: “My Sassy Girl” (2001)

There aren’t too many rom-coms where the woman is the unruly party, which helps make this movie so unique. Based on the true experiences of author and co-screenwriter Kim Ho-sik, “My Sassy Girl” was a monster hit in East Asia and became the highest grossing Korean comedy ever at the time of its release. It’s easy to see why, since the film is the hilarious story of Gyeon-woo, an engineering student who falls in love with “The Girl,” a mischievous force of nature who goes after what she wants in any situation. The movie was such a hit, it spawned a sequel, various international remakes, and even a TV show.
