Apple’s minimalist design philosophy is instantly clear when looking at the AirPods Max. Standout features include a weight-distributing, breathable knit mesh headband, articulating, bulging ear cups with L and R markings on the inside and the incorporation of Apple’s digital crown - which has been carried over from the Apple Watch. A Smart Case is also included, although it doesn’t seem like this case serves any additional function except for putting your headphones into an ‘ultralow power state’ - so don’t expect things like wireless charging compatibility, at least not at first. Unlike many other Apple products, you actually get to choose from a variety of colors with the AirPods Max — not just greys and silvers — with five different colors in total. You can also swap ear cushions and, like the AirPods, opt to personalise your headphones with an engraving.

Sound-wise - at least on paper - the AirPods Max are a pretty serious set of headphones. Inside, there are not one, but two of Apple’s H1 chips, one in each ear-cup. Although the majority of the AirPods Max’s specs are similar to the AirPods earphones - with Active Noise Cancellation, Adaptive EQ and Transparency Mode - they do bring a new Spatial Audio feature. Using the headphone’s gyroscope and accelerometer - together with dynamic head tracking - the Spatial Audio feature allows for a more immersive sound experience. In essence, the sound will feel like it’s completely wrapping around you, as opposed to just coming from one direction.

On a full charge, Apple claims that the AirPods Max offer up to 20 hours of battery life. And fast charging is supported too, so you can get a 1 and a half hour battery boost from a mere five-minute quick charge. However, from launch, there’s no wireless charging support for the AirPods Max, so you’ll have to use a lightning cable - and in-line with Apple’s environmental goals, a power adapter is not included in the box. For added flexibility though, the AirPods Max do allow you to listen via plugged-in cable - instead of relying on Bluetooth - and you can also use the headphones with non-Apple products.

Just like the AirPods earphones, the AirPods Max incorporate Apple’s Siri voice assistant, which allows you to ask for directions, make phone calls, adjust music volume, and much more, using voice commands. The AirPods Max also offer Apple’s super simple one-tap set-up, which makes pairing to a new device incredibly simple. Automatic pairing is also built-in, so the headphones will sync with all of your iCloud devices - from your iPhone to your Apple Watch.

The AirPods Max go on sale with a list price of $549. For context, the in-ear AirPods start at $159 and the AirPods Pro start from $249. So yeah, $549 is pretty steep - especially when you consider that Sony’s XM4s cost $280. But who knows - maybe Apple will release a mid-price model between the AirPods Pro and the AirPods Max!
