Snapchat Vs Instagram

Honestly… we could end the video right here. That one tidbit of information is worth five facts any day. But… our editors have told us we’re not allowed hit you with one fact, drop the mic and still call it a “top 5”, so… we’ll elaborate. As everyone knows, branding is essential to any strong business. So what’s the deal with this little, non-descript ghost? It may relate to the app’s original name “picaboo.” Co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel actually drew the logo himself, which he has said was inspired by his love of rap, and specifically Wu-Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah. This cute little ghost with a big badass name has grown and evolved with the company–from a silly face to a blank one, to better represent the idea that users are the face of the app.

#4: Snapchat Is More Popular with Females than Males

In 2013 at a Goldman Sachs conference, it was revealed by Snapchat executives that approximately 70% of users were female. Since then, the data has shifted, but the app continues to be more popular with women: a Harvard survey published in 2015 states that 42% of females between the ages of 18 and 29 used Snapchat, while 31% of males in that age range had an account. Meanwhile, according to Statista, as of 2015, more than half of Snapchat users were between the ages of 16 and 24, proving the app has become the social media choice of the youth– a more immediate and personal platform.

Like any great social media startup… Snapchat began as an idea discussed between friends–friends who would wind up hating each other. As previously mentioned, Evan Spiegel claimed he designed the logo, while Frank Reginald Brown, or “Reggie” as his friends call him, says that HE’S actually the one behind the mascot design. Brown also claimed to have come up with the initial concept of a social media app that would send photos that disappear. Allegedly, the idea came to him after he himself sent a photo he wished he could take back. At least, that’s how the story goes. Brown claims that when he pitched the idea for the app, Spiegel called it a “million dollar idea”. Well, Spiegel wasn’t exactly right… it was more of a billion dollar idea... a multi-billion dollar idea. Brown eventually received an undisclosed sum out of court for his contributions.

#2: In Terms of Numbers, Snapchat Wins at Photo Sharing

More isn’t always better… but when you’re going up against the likes of Facebook and Instagram… numbers are kind of everything. Instagram might be the place for people to post curated photos, and Facebook might be the place to share memories with family and friends… but Snapchat is about sharing “in the moment.” And by tapping into people’s natural desire to take a photo without thinking about the repercussions… Snapchat has become the most prolific photo-sharing app in the world, surpassing both Facebook and Instagram - with an estimated 9000 photos shared per second. Thanks to the popularity of “stories,” the app generates a total of 10 billion video views per day. It’s become so popular, that Instagram has released their own version of “stories”.

You know that you’re making waves in the world of social media platforms when Facebook wants to buy you out. Mark Zuckerberg initially offered the boys of Snapchat a tidy $1 billion for the company in 2013. They turned him down, and Marky Z came back to offer $3 billion. Again - they said no only to have Zuckerberg return the next day with a $4B offer. In 2014, co-founder Evan Spiegel was the world’s youngest billionaire, and he achieved that by NOT selling. As of 2016, he and his partner Bobby Murphy are worth over $1.5 billion each, and their company has been valued at over $20 billion. Considering Spiegel and Murphy would’ve only pocketed $750 million each had they accepted Zuckerberg’s offer, they clearly made the right choice. Do you use Snapchat? If so, how much do you use it compared to Facebook? For more trendy top 10s and technologically-inclined Top 5s, be sure to subscribe to MsMojo.
