Top 10 Most Influential Anime

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we are counting down our picks for the Top 10 WatchMojo Anime Lists That Haven’t Aged Well. For this list, we’re taking it on the chin by looking back at some of our previous blunders throughout the minefield that are our anime lists. Keep in mind, we’ll be including a mixture of videos that were either DOA from inception, or just have that one annoying rotten apple of an entry that brings the rest down. Think we missed a WatchMojo anime list that needed roasting? And don’t bother saying all of them, we already made that joke at time of writing! Let us know in the comments!

#10: Top 10 Anime Vampires

Top 10 Vampires In Anime

Go on, get all your “this list bites” comments out the way. This is one of the many examples of “classic WatchMojo yet to be baptised in the waters of weeaboo culture”. Upon reflection, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t have included Dio among anime’s greatest bloodsuckers. JoJo fever was riding high by the time it came out, so to ignore the Joestars’ one true nemesis was a major faux pas. Thankfully we made amends by having him be front in centre in a later redux. Guess by this point this video is well and truly muda.

#9: Top 10 Anime Romances Doomed to Fail

Also in:

Top 10 LGBTQ+ Anime Romances

We’re all about highlighting and obliterating toxic anime relationships on this platform, and yet it seems we missed the mark when it came to Beastars’ resident power couple. Given how things ended in season one, we presumed that Haru and Legoshi weren’t long for the dating scene, as badly as we were all shipping it. Then the manga happened, along with Season Two. Even if both are still a slave to their faults on occasion, seeing them overcome the eat or be eaten mentality of their world to pursue a relationship together is super refreshing. True love ain’t dead yet!

#8: Anything Anticipating "The Promised Neverland" Season Two

Also in:

Top 10 Anime Winter 2021

This still hurts. Back when we were naïve and optimistic, we wouldn’t have dreamed that a sequel to something as demonstrably amazing as The Promised Neverland could stumble, let alone nosedive into the abyss of awful. It was a rushed, painful experience that tarnished the memory of the original’s splendour. Made all the worse by how we were hyping it up right up until the moment it released! Now all these videos do is serve as a crushing reminder of how CloverWorks bamboozled us.

#7: Top 10 Strongest Naruto Characters

Top 10 Strongest Naruto Characters

Technically, thanks to Youtube’s latest policy, this is a runaway hit with millions of views! Yeah, who are we kidding, this was a misstep, and it's all thanks to where we placed Kakashi. Some bad research had us believing that his use of the Perfect Mangekyo Sharingan warranted him a higher spot compared to Naruto and Sasuke. Not only did this go down like a Chidori to the gonads, but events in Boruto made it abundantly clear the titular shinobi were in a league of their own. At least we made amends in our Top 20 version!

#6: Top 10 Most Anticipated Anime of 2017 & 2018

Also in:

Top 10 Anticipated Anime of Summer 2018

All we can say is that it’s a good thing that Season Two of One Punch Man was released in 2019 or this would have been a trilogy of tarnished dreams. Looking back on the final result, it seems silly to be so hyped for Saitama’s return on account of how much of a step down the second season was, but back in the day we were chomping at the bit for more of the caped baldy’s exploits. And yet he kept us waiting for two years in a row!

#5: Top 10 Live Action Anime Adaptations No One Asked For

Ninety percent of these flicks should be ignored or forgotten at all costs. As for Alita Battle Angel…we owe someone an apology. It turned out this flashy adaptation of the classic OVA and manga was a rip-roaringly good time. Who would have figured? It was wrong of us to jump on the bandwagon, and it gave us all a sliver of hope for future anime adaptations. Then along came Cowboy Bebop and knocked us back into depression. Enjoy being the one silver lining Alita!

#4: Top 10 Grossest Anime Relationships

Also in:

Top 10 Grossest Anime Relationships (Ft. Todd Haberkorn)

While this video is probably one of the funnier ones we’ve made, and takes credit for nearly destroying Todd Haberkorn, there was one entry that now seems a tad out of place. We were under the impression in The Seven Deadly Sins, Elizabeth was a human continuously reincarnated over and over, and each time her demonic lover was there to watch her grow up, knowing one day she’d be legal for him to go downward dragon on her. That didn’t turn out to be the case, with Elizabeth actually being an Angel from the get-go who had lived thousands of years prior. Still a little weird, but less so than we initially thought.

#3: Top 10 Manga That Deserve Anime

Also in:

Top 10 Anime Not Based on Manga

This is actually a point of pride for us! Since its release, nearly every manga we predicted of getting adapted…actually got an adaptation. Quality notwithstanding. It wasn’t a long wait either, with Record of Ragnarok, Chainsaw Man and now even Spy x Family getting themselves some of that animated goodness. Maybe next time we’ll have to go for more obscure titles. Or there’s some voodoo shit going on that we don’t know about. In which case, when can we expect A Bride’s Story and Fire Punch to come out?!

#2: Top 10 Anime Series

Also in:

Top 10 Beautiful Anime Series

Ha…ha…ha. Yeah, this is…definitely a thing. All we can say is that this was from a time before WatchMojo hired hardcore anime fans. And as a result of it being a product of the outside looking in, there’s no nuance to these choices. Plus, it declared these singular ten the best of all time before the new decade had even started. Do you know how many incredible anime have come out since?! We still love Dragon Ball, but putting it up as the pinnacle was a major oversight. That and putting Fairy Tail above Code Geass. Yeah, we aren’t going to be living that down anytime soon. Hence why we’ve since resolved to focus our efforts on cataloguing the best anime to come out each year instead!

#1: Top 10 Terrible Anime Adaptations of Great Manga

Also in:

Top 10 Terrible Anime Adaptations of Great Manga

Here’s the thing. Back in the day, hating on Black Clover wasn’t just a bandwagon, there were legitimate reasons. Lesser animation, cut content, Asta’s scream, the whole thing just didn’t measure up to the shonen of the past. Then Studio Pierrot pulled their heads out from their asses and delivered onto us one of the most incredible, high octane, fantasy battle anime of the last twenty years. You just need to have a casual glance at the series’ later episodes to see the evolution. Considering how obsessed we are with Black Clover these days; we feel obligated to own up to our short sightedness!
