VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton WRITTEN BY: Nancy Roberge-Renaud
They may've appeared in love, but these are the TV kisses that actors hated. Our countdown includes "Stranger Things," "One Tree Hill," "The X-Files," and more!

#10: Alyson Hannigan & Jason Segel “How I Met Your Mother” (2005-14)

Despite playing the loving, quirky couple of Lily and Marshall, Hannigan apparently couldn’t stand kissing Segel in real life. Segel was a heavy smoker at the time, and Hannigan was repulsed by his smoker’s breath. She reportedly tried to help him quit, and Segel would take mints prior to kissing scenes, but unfortunately nothing really helped. We can’t blame Hannigan for this one, as kissing an ashtray isn’t an attractive thought. The actors worked very well together despite this, and have said nothing but niceties about each other - which is in contrast to some of the entries in our list.

#9: Nina Dobrev & Ian Somerhalder “The Vampire Diaries” (2009-17)

It’s not always a good idea to get romantically involved with your TV co-star offscreen. While “Vampire Diaries” fans revelled in the onscreen and offscreen relationship of these two, their offscreen pairing lasted only a couple of years. Following their break-up, Dobrev and Somerhalder continued to portray Elena and Damon on the popular show - with the number of smooches they had to share being reportedly limited thereafter. Dobrev left the supernatural teen drama around the time Somerhalder wed her friend Nikki Reed, sparking speculation that this and the awkwardness that ensued were one of the reasons she left. We can’t imagine there’s much enjoyment in passionately smooching your unattainable ex. Dobrev returned to the show for its finale, and had to share a romantic moment with Somerhalder, which couldn’t have been easy - though the ex-lovers state they’re still friends.

#8: Sadie Sink & Caleb McLaughlin “Stranger Things” (2016-)

You know what makes a young actor’s first kiss easier? Being surrounded by hundreds of extras. Just kidding. Sadie Sink, who was only in her mid-teens, was allegedly pressured into kissing co-star Caleb McLaughlin on the set of the hit sci-fi horror series, causing a bit of a social media upheaval. Creator/director Ross Duffer claims he made a joke about the two locking lips, and upon seeing Sink’s stressed reaction, decided to make it a part of the scene. The reluctant teens followed his orders, and performed the awkward kiss scene. While Sink has subsequently said she was fine with what happened, it doesn’t change the fact that she was initially uncomfortable.

#7: Gillian Anderson & David Duchovny “The X-Files” (1993-2002; 2016-18)

Though the two “X-Files” alums are friends nowadays, they apparently weren’t always so friendly towards each other in the past. Anderson & Duchovny were co-stars for years in the ‘90s, and according to the actors themselves, they did not really become friends throughout the experience. The characters of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully were not romantically involved for most of the show, so at least the duo were spared constant love scenes. However, they did share a kiss or two in a couple of episodes of “The X-Files”, and we can’t imagine the two parties were ready and willing to get so close to each other.

#6: Lauren Graham & Scott Patterson “Gilmore Girls” (2000-07)

Though a lot of characters have great chemistry on-screen, many actors had none when the cameras were off. Such was supposedly the case with Graham and Patterson. The adorable double-L couple of Lorelei and Luke were much loved by fans. But of their offscreen relationship, Graham has said that the characters had great chemistry, but the actors themselves were not “intimate”. These two are a testament to the professionalism of actors, however, as much like some of our other entries in this list, they portrayed the couple as the script dictated. There wasn’t any direct proof that the two didn’t get along, but it has been cheekily implied in interviews, so we can’t imagine that sharing such intimate moments in front of all to see were particularly enjoyable experiences.

#5: Mila Kunis & Ashton Kutcher “That ‘70s Show” (1998-2006)

Kutcher was Kunis’s first kiss, and having lied about her age to get on the sitcom, she was only 14 and he was 19 at the time. Kutcher has said that though they are now happily married, Kunis was like a little sister to him during the shoot. He would even help her with her homework in between takes. So when the two had to lock lips as Jackie and Kelso, unease ensued. Kutcher has even claimed that he wondered about the legality of the situation, as Kunis was a minor. Despite all this, the two now look upon it fondly, and that they have documented memories of their first kiss. How… romantic?

#4: Stana Katic & Nathan Fillion “Castle” (2009-16)

You know that TV couple for whom you watch innumerable episodes in the hopes that they’ll hook up? Almost every show has one, especially crime or police procedurals. Kate Beckett and Richard Castle were pretty much that couple from the start of “Castle.” However, Stana Katic felt quite differently about Nathan Fillion behind the scenes. The two reportedly despised each other, and Katic would sometimes retreat to her dressing room to cry. The rumors state that Fillion basically bullied Katic on set, and the two were even ordered to attend actual couples counselling. Imagine having to repeatedly film kissing scenes with your bully...

#3: Charlie Sheen & Selma Blair “Anger Management” (2012-14)

Good Luck Charlie Cast: Where Are They Now?

At this point, it probably shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that Charlie Sheen wasn’t the easiest to work with. While filming “Anger Management”, Selma Blair, who played a friend with benefits to Sheen’s character, became irritated with Sheen’s “work ethic” and late arrivals to set. She made a complaint to producers, and upon finding out about it, Sheen’s fire was lit. He stopped at nothing until she was dismissed. One can only imagine the tension present in having to film intimate scenes in such an environment. Clearly, the show’s title did not only fit fictionally, as the actors demonstrated in their unfortunate real-life “feud”.

#2: Sophia Bush & Chad Michael Murray “One Tree Hill” (2003-12)

These two had their entire real love life fling while starring together in “One Tree Hill”. They dated, got married and got divorced all while working together. That can’t be easy, and on top of it all, Bush claims the producers took advantage of the real-life drama between the two actors by running ads detailing their divorce to attract and fuel audiences. She has also claimed that she initially felt pressured into marrying Murray. She chalks it up to being inexperienced and impulsive in her youth. The two shared many a kiss on-screen throughout all this as well as following it - and considering the circumstances, it couldn’t have been easy.

#1: Tisha Campbell & Martin Lawrence “Martin” (1992-97)

The details as to what happened between these two aren’t 100% clear or confirmed Some reports claim that Martin Lawrence was romantically interested in Tisha Campbell, who already had a partner at the time. This unsurprisingly created tension on set. Campbell subsequently sued Lawrence for sexual harassment following her exit from the show. If you put these two stories together, you get a case of unrequited love, or unwanted advances. The two had to play a loving couple, but this just couldn’t be maintained due to the state of affairs. During “Martin”’s final season, Campbell even refused to share scenes with Lawrence, and we can’t blame her: having to kiss someone who has a crush on you and whose feelings you don’t share - combined with his alleged inappropriate behavior - isn’t the most ideal of situations, to put it mildly.
