Top 10 Times Schitt's Creek Got Serious

Top 10 Times Schitt's Creek Got Serious
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton
It's a comedy, but sometimes "Schitt's Creek" got serious. Our countdown includes Jocelyn's stuggling, David talks to Ted, wine, and more!

#10: Johnny Sticks Up for Schitt’s Creek “Happy Anniversary”

Also in:

Top 10 Johnny & Moira Moments On Schitt's Creek

When the Roses lost everything and ended up in Schitt’s Creek, all their former friends left them behind; with no money, they weren’t worth knowing. But just when Johnny and Moira are starting to get used to small-town life, they run into their old friends Bev and Don while out at a fancy restaurant for their anniversary. Then Jocelyn and Roland show up. But far from Roland embarrassing the Roses, it turns out that Bev and Don are the embarrassing ones; they mock Schitt’s Creek and the people who live there, causing the Roses to finally stick up for the town they live in and the new people in their lives.

#9: Jocelyn’s Struggling “The Plant”

At the end of season four, Jocelyn has a new baby; this can be a struggle later in life especially since Jocelyn and Roland already have one adult son, Mutt. The stresses of dealing with a newborn quickly take their toll on Jocelyn, who isn’t getting the support she needs from either her husband or her other friends in the town. Eventually, she snaps and makes it clear to the Jazzagals that she’s got too much on her plate and she’s going to need some help. Everybody gets burned out at one time or another, and it’s important to have friends and family there when that happens – a lesson Jocelyn’s friends finally learn.

#8: Alexis Tells Ted She Loves Him “The Rollout”

Also in:

Top 10 Times Alexis Rose Was the Best Character on Schitt's Creek

It takes a lot of guts to tell anybody you’re in love with them, but even more so if that person is your ex-boyfriend whom you cheated on because you didn’t see how great he was at the time. Eventually, though, Alexis can’t keep her feelings to herself. We already know she’s still into Ted because she confided in David after an excruciatingly awkward business meeting about goat’s cheese, but it takes her a few more episodes to speak her truth. It’s incredibly brave of her not only to tell Ted, but also to make it clear that she isn’t expecting him to reciprocate since he’s moved on with Heather; she’s honest without blowing up his life.

#7: David Talks to Ted “Singles Week”

Also in:

10 Times David Rose Was the Best Character on Schitt's Creek

After Alexis’s love confession near the end of season four, Ted begins to spiral; unbeknownst to Alexis, he’s broken up with Heather but doesn’t know where to go next. David ends up dropping off some vet supplies Alexis was supposed to, and Ted confides in him. It’s David’s influence that means Ted and Alexis get back together, because he explains how much Alexis has grown and changed in the years since they broke up. David’s encouragement and support led to Ted heading down to Singles Week on its launch night and rekindling his romance with Alexis.

#6: Alexis Goes Back to High School “General Store”

Also in:

Top 10 Alexis & Ted Moments on Schitt's Creek

After being in Schitt’s Creek for a while, Alexis finally decides it’s time she heads back to college to earn a degree in something she might use. But after enquiring, it turns out she needs her high school diploma, and she dropped out before she finished. So, she goes back to high school first in a class full of teenagers taught by Jocelyn. Alexis’s entire arc of getting her education as an adult proves how mature she’s become, and it goes to show it’s never too late to learn more or earn some additional qualifications if that’s something you want or need to be your best self. The pride she feels at her graduation ceremony makes it all worth it.

#5: Stevie Feels Aimless “The Job Interview”

Also in:

Top 10 David & Stevie Moments on Schitt's Creek

We first meet her when she’s the motel desk clerk, but Stevie quickly becomes the fifth member of the Rose family. And just like the Roses, she has her own journey to go on. Throughout the show, it’s clear Stevie feels aimless and wants something more out of her life – though she’s not sure what. She’s chosen by Moira to play the lead in “Cabaret”, which puts her out of her comfort zone enough to admit in season six that she wants to get away from the motel and see the world. Ultimately, she realizes that the motel is her true calling, but this struggle to work out who she is and what she wants is profoundly relatable.

#4: David & Patrick’s First Kiss “Grad Night”

Also in:

Top 10 Best David & Alexis Sibling Moments on Schitt's Creek

Patrick doesn’t arrive on the scene until over halfway through season three, but he quickly becomes a staple and one of the best parts of the entire show. However, it takes Patrick a while to understand who he is once he meets David. Because of that, there’s an unusual atmosphere after they go out for dinner to celebrate David’s birthday, and it turns out that Patrick was too nervous to kiss David. Though David is generally high-strung he’s extremely understanding and empathetic to how Patrick is feeling; lots of people take a while to work out the details of their sexuality, and “Schitt’s Creek” handles this with total compassion.

#3: Wine “Honeymoon”

We all know now that David Rose is pansexual, but the details of his sexuality weren’t clear right away – particularly not for Stevie, who assumes he’s gay until they end up sleeping together in what’s gotta be the motel’s ugliest room. She asks for clarification, and David delivers a now-famous allegory about wine to explain his identity. It’s a simple metaphor that makes perfect sense to people who don’t know much about pansexuality or fluidity, and it’s also refreshing to see a pan or bi character on a TV show actually describe themselves as such. People have even used that wine metaphor in real life since Dan Levy came up with it.

#2: Ted & Alexis Break Up “The Presidential Suite”

Also in:

Top 10 Most Hilarious Schitt's Creek Bloopers

Ted gets a place on a six-month research program to the Galapagos Islands, during which he tells Alexis not to visit him out of consideration for her. He later gets offered a three-year, permanent position because it goes so well. With Alexis still in Schitt’s Creek and thinking of moving to New York for her PR career– and completely unable to move to the Galapagos – things just aren’t right for them at that moment. In the end, they break up so that they can each follow their dreams. It’s a heartbreaking scene that shows no matter how great a relationship is, sometimes it’s just not going to work. Alexis and Ted remain on the best terms possible, and they could have a future somewhere down the line, we hope.

#1: Patrick’s Parents “Meet the Parents”

Also in:

Top 10 Best David & Patrick Moments on Schitt’s Creek

David and Patrick make their relationship official in the season four premiere, but it takes until near the end of season five for David to actually meet Patrick’s parents – and there’s an obstacle he hasn’t considered. It turns out that Patrick hasn’t yet told his parents either that he’s gay or that he’s seeing David, which puts him under a lot of stress. He and David have a heart to heart, where Patrick confesses that he believes his parents aren’t homophobic, but the fear that they could reject him for who he is has been affecting him. In the end, his parents are supportive, but David’s assurance that Patrick doesn’t have to come out to anybody that he doesn’t want to speaks volumes.
