Top 10 Times Anime Villains Mercilessly Killed Their Own Allies

Top 10 Times Anime Villains Mercilessly Killed Their Own Allies
VOICE OVER: Ashley Bowman WRITTEN BY: Alex Crilly-Mckean
These villainous betrayals were shocking! For this list, we're looking over the times where villains laid off their underlings and close confidants, permanently. Our countdown includes “Fire Force”, “Death Note”, “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood”, and more!

#10: Arrow Kills Rekka

“Fire Force” (2019-) Snitches get stitches, and apparently weaklings get a flaming bolt if you belong to the White Clad. After Rekka is weakened by Shinra, he finds himself frozen from the feet up when the cavalry arrives, unable to escape even with all his crazy fire ramblings. Unfortunately, the Fire Soldiers never get a chance to question him, since Arrow snipes him through the gut before they have a chance to pry any information on the Evangelist out of him. Not saying he didn’t deserve it just…bad timing.

#9: Char Kills Kycilia

“Mobile Suit Gundam” (1979-80) Granted, many of the Zabi family considered the Red Comet to be an ally in their ploys for domination. Little did they know that Char secretly had his sights set on erasing all of them, as revenge for his father’s death. Out of all the Zabis he wasted, none are more iconic than Kycilia. Even after being severely wounded in his fight with Amuro, Char still found the strength to load himself up a laser cannon, and blast Kycilia’s head off just as she was about to make her escape. They don’t call him an ace for nothing.

#8: Bondrewd Kills Prushka

“Made In Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul” (2020) Just when you thought it wasn’t possible for the Sovereign of Dawn to sink any lower, just when you thought there was no cruller act he could commit…he does this. Bad enough what he put Nanachi and Mitty through for the sake of his experiments, but to reduce his own daughter into a fleshless weapon to be used as a means to fend off the Curse of the Abyss is beyond heartless. The fact he didn’t consider the literal deconstruction of Pruska to be malicious in any way and just a logical step is the perfect encapsulation of what makes Bondrewd so terrifying.

#7: Kotomine Kills Tohsaka

“Fate/Zero” (2011-12) For a supposedly genius mage competing in the Fourth Holy Grail War, you would have thought that Tohsaka would have taken every possible precaution to ensure he made it out alive…including not to completely trust the emotionally stunted church assassin. Inspired by Gilgamesh’s words about finding his own joy, even if it be through evil means, Kotomine embraces his newfound sadistic lifestyle by stabbing his old friend in the back. It’s a pathetic end to such an egotistical fool of a character, as well as the rise of one of Fate’s most infamous antagonists.

#6: Light Kills Takada

“Death Note” (2006-07) And this is why dating guys who happen to be mass murdering gods of the new world is never a good idea. An old flame of Light’s that he sought to use for his own ends, Takada was promised a place by his side as a Goddess, one who would replace Misa. As expected of Light, he lied. After Mello kidnapped her in an effort to find a way to discover Kira’s identity, Light uses the Death Note to have Takada take her own life and keep his secret secure. Some boyfriend, huh?

#5: Shishio Kills Yumi

“Rurouni Kenshin” (1996-98) The battle between the former and current Manslayers is a showdown for the ages, pushing the two strongest swordsmen of their era into a bloody bout that concludes when Kenshin demonstrates that he’s still the superior swordsman. Not for Shishio’s lack of trying. He nearly sets Kenshin alive, takes a bite out of him, and of course, tries to land a cheap shot…by stabbing him through his girlfriend. Yumi may have awful taste in men but even she didn’t deny an unceremonious death like that!

#4: Vegeta Kills Nappa

Also in:

Top 20 Times Vegeta Went Beast Mode In Dragon Ball

“Dragon Ball Z” (1989-96) Back in his villain days, Vegeta had no problem wiping out whole planets, so what chance did Nappa think he had? After failing so miserably against Goku, the prince of Saiyans decides he’s better as a solo act, and immediately does away with his loudmouthed partner in crime by blasting him to pieces. It’s a great demonstration of the dark side of Vegeta’s pride, though we can’t help but wonder how their relationship could change if Nappa ever made a return in Super. Can you imagine the banter?!

#3: Pride Kills Gluttony

“Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” (2009-10) Got to love the irony. As a manifestation of endless hunger, Gluttony’s only real joy in life came from feasting on anything it could find…and then he got digested by his older sibling. Weakened due to the battle with the Elrics, Pride decides he needs a boost, and what better way to power up than by feasting on the Philosopher’s Stone found inside his fellow Homunculus? Gluttony may have the bigger appetite, but turns out his sin isn’t the one with the biggest mouth.

#2: Muzan Kills the Lower Moons

“Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” (2019-) Living as a supposedly unkillable demon might sound like it has it perks, but then you find out that management is extremely picky when it comes to incompetency. Displeased by the cowardice of the Lower Moons and their refusal to hunt after the Hashira, Muzan decides to do a little housekeeping…and slaughters the five weakest members of his elite inner circle. No matter how much they beg, bargain or attempt to flee, none survive his cleansing. Unless you’re a sadistic sycophant like Enmu, in which case, free promotion!

#1: Griffith Kills the Band of the Hawk

“Berserk” (1997-98) There has never been a more grandiose (or soul shattering) turn to the dark side in all of anime than right here. Promised power in exchange for surrendering the lives of all his comrades, Griffith accepts the gift of the God Hand, and makes the ascension to one of the strongest apostles in existence. In exchange for his dream becoming a reality, all members of the Band of the Hawk are massacred by a swarm of demons. Save for Casca and Guts, who nonetheless suffer the full sting of Griffith’s betrayal.
