In the years since its initial release, “The Room” has garnered more and more fans who are equal parts perplexed by it and in awe of its greatness. It’s one of those movies that has many small details that reveal themselves upon multiple viewings, so rewatching is a must. Just like “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”, “The Room” has become a favorite for live screenings among fans. People dress up as their favorite characters, know when to laugh and when to groan, and of course, know when to throw spoons at the big screen. #9: The Ending

As this movie progresses, it gets increasingly dramatic when suspicions are running high and Lisa is becoming more and more reckless. It all culminates at Johnny’s birthday party (which has been teased for the entire film) when he finally realizes just how much his future wife has betrayed him. He goes on a tear around the apartment, hilariously trashing everything in sight and knocking over furniture. The most shocking (and confusing moment) is when he takes Lisa’s red dress and starts well… humping it. It all culminates with his sudden suicide, in a move that seems all-too-serious for a not-so-serious film.

One of fans’ favorite things about the movie is the myriad of plot lines that start and then just seem to fizzle out without ever being resolved. Johnny’s weird young friend Denny gets into an altercation with a drug dealer on the building’s rooftop, and has a gun put to his head, before his friends come to the rescue. Then… we never hear about it again. The most memorable example is when Lisa’s mother announces matter-of-factly mid-conversation that she “definitely has breast cancer” and well, that too is never referenced again. Get well soon, Claudette!

When Tommy Wiseau was thinking about what he should have his male leads do when they were chatting, he probably thought: “Of course… football! All-American men love football”. There are multiple scenes in “The Room” where the guys are tossing a ball around, usually at very close range or in situations where it just simply seems like a bad idea. . . like on a rooftop. In one memorable scene, they’re all wearing tuxedos and throwing around the old pigskin. One would assume this means that it’s finally Johnny and Lisa’s wedding day. . ..but it’s not.

In first few acts of the film, Johnny has a psychologist friend named Peter whom he goes to for advice. Peter, who is “just a little chicken” according to Johnny, was initially played by actor Kyle Vogt. Inexplicably though, by the time Johnny’s birthday party rolls around, Peter is nowhere to be found. Playing a similar role is actor Greg Ellery, who is now called Steven and acts as though he has an intimate knowledge of all of the major characters… even though we’ve never seen him before.

If you want to analyse Johnny and Lisa’s apartment, there’s a lot of material to work with. Why have they placed an armchair directly in front of the TV, for example? One of the most curious things though is that all of their art seems to feature spoons. During live screenings, fans are always prepared with plastic spoons to throw at the screen during key moments. When asked what the significance of spoons in the film was in the movie, Tommy Wiseau gave an enlightening answer that finally explained everything. . . or at least he tried to.

While the writing in “The Room” is unquestionably awful, the delivery of many of the lines makes it all the worse. Many of the actors offer stiff and awkward performances, but no one steals the show quite like Tommy Wiseau as main character Johnny. His lines are unquestionably the most iconic, and when he’s feeling heated, you know it’s going to be good. Also, just like the characters in “Arrested Development”, it seems like no one in this movie has any idea what a chicken sounds like.

The plot of “The Room” is pretty straightforward. Johnny and Lisa are engaged, but Lisa is cheating on him with his best friend Mark. There aren’t exactly a whole lot of complexities to this classic love triangle story, except that Tommy Wiseau manages to take us on countless twists and turns throughout the plot that have seemingly no impact on the main story. Not to mention, character motivations are often murky and inconsistent, with Lisa sometimes defending Johnny and sometimes insisting that she can’t stand him and that he physically abuses her. We still can’t make heads or tails of it all!

Just as confusing as the plot are the individual characters’ lines. Tommy Wiseau’s real-life background is mysterious, and it sure seems that English is not his first language. Some lines totally come out of left field, like “Anyway, how’s your sex life?”; while others are simply melodramatic and overwrought. Whether your favorite is “You’re tearing me apart, Lisa!”, “I did not hit her” or “Hi, doggie,” there’s truly something for everyone in this spectacular movie. The writer, director, producer and star behind this masterpiece is of course, Tommy Wiseau. He has been consistently shady about his background, meaning that his age and country of origin are still mysteries, even to the biggest fans. Some have claimed to have unearthed details about him, including a copy of his birth certificate, but nothing has been confirmed. Without him, we would never have had this work of art in our lives; and for that, we have to be thankful. James Franco was so entranced with it all that he adapted a 2013 memoir about making “The Room” into a 2017 film in which he portrays Wiseau. Also called “The Disaster Artist,” the non-fiction book was penned by Greg Sistero, the actor who played Mark in the original film.
