Though we were tempted to go with Dark Samus rising after the credits of “Metroid Prime,” we had to choose the post-credits scene from “Super Metroid.” In this third instalment, we once again follow bounty hunter Samas Aran as she tracks down a group of Space Pirates who are attempting to weaponize the Metroids, creatures who can siphon life energy. The credits roll after defeating Mother Brain, and we finally see Samus out of her Power Suit. However, she’ll only take off her full power suit if you beat the game in under 3 hours. Any longer and she’ll only take off her helmet, or just give a thumbs up.

Don’t you just love when a game closes with a jaw-dropping twist? That’s the case with our first post-credits scene. In “Dragon Age: Inquisition,” the player controls the Inquisitor, a vital figure the war-torn fantasy world of Thedas. Throughout the game, you meet many allies, though Solas leaves after the main campaign. We find out why this is after the credits. Discovering that an ally that could potentially be the player’s love interest is actually the God of Betrayal comes as quite a shock, and the deception even feels personal.

This legendary Square RPG follows Cloud and his allies as they chase Sephiroth to stop him from becoming a god and destroying the world with Meteor. Eventually, the player is forced to face him in the iconic final boss battle. The game ends before revealing whether or not Sephiroth’s Meteor destroys the Planet, but we’re given hints in this post-credits scene. Its greatness lies in its ambiguity. What happened to Midgar? What does that laughing mean? How far in the future is this? It’s true meaning may never be known, and that’s why we love it.

This Telltale point-and-click adventure has a gameplay focus of problem solving rather than combat. What happens throughout the game varies depending on the player’s choices, but regardless of what is chosen, the game retains its dark ending. Either Lee is shot by Clementine, or he becomes a Walker. No matter what though, the post-credits scene also stays the same. It’s a dark way to end the game, and that’s why it’s so memorable. Even though the first adventure is over, no one is safe, and we can’t wait to see what happens next.
#6: Past and Present Eggman Trapped “Sonic Generations” (2011)
One of Sonic’s most recent iterations also features the series’ most complex plot. After Dr. Eggman discovers the Time Eater entity, he uses it to travel back in time to enlist the help of his younger self, back when he was known as Dr. Robotnik. The game’s final battle has a modern and classic version of Sonic taking on a machine built around the Time Eater, in which the climax results in the two Doctors being sucked into the timeless void. After they’re defeated, we don’t find out what happened to them until after the credits. While it’s funny to watch these two argue, since they’re the same person, it’s even funnier to watch them decide to go into teaching.

This cult classic follows Jade and Pey’j as they take on the DomZ, an evil species of alien that’s attempting to take over their home planet of Hillys. After rescuing Pey’j, Jade nearly loses her soul battling the DomZ High Priest, but is victorious. Ultimately, we’re treated to a happy ending. At least until after the credits, that is. Such a mind-blowing twist would usually occur before the credits. It wasn’t until the sequel that we find out-wait...there’s no sequel? We don’t know what happens next? You’re killing us, Ubisoft.
#4: The Dance “Bayonetta” (2009)

Bayonetta’s ending likes to troll the player. At first when it looks like the final boss is over, the credits start rolling and SURPRISE FAKE OUT. Ok after THAT is taken care of she defeats the god Jubileus and saves the world FINALLY. One would expect some kind of tease for a sequel after the credits, but rather, we’re treated to this. The perfect way to cap off such a stylized game, this left us wanting more than any cliffhanger ever could. At least until Bayonetta 2 when it’s Post credit scene ends up … setting up the first game. Ok I’m confused.
#3: A Man of Taste “Conker’s Bad Fur Day” (2001)

In this frivolous adult adventure for the Nintendo 64, one wouldn’t expect such a bleak resolution. Conker goes on a wild adventure after a night of heavy drinking to find his girlfriend, but ultimately, she dies in his arms. After the credits, we see Conker at the same bar he began the game in, drowning his sorrows. When he leaves, he goes the opposite direction than he did in the beginning of the game. The callbacks to the opening scene are what make the ending special, by highlighting the difference in tone. This ending is dark and depressing, but we still love it.
#2: Wheatley’s Apology “Portal 2” (2011)
This lovable little AI core pulls a fast one on you at the end of the first act of Portal 2, assuming the role of the main antagonist for the rest of the game. In the end though, he is blasted into space, and later we get to see what becomes of him. It’s actually devilishly satisfying to see one of gaming’s biggest traitors getting what he deserves. Stephen Merchant’s charming and sincere voiceover performance makes us almost want to forgive the little guy. Almost. We don’t, though. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. The third instalment in the “Halo” series sees the Master Chief finish the fight against the genocidal Covenant. After the Halo is destroyed in the game’s final sequence, the main characters fly away, though the explosion separates the ship in two, resulting in Master Chief and Cortana being left behind and presumed dead. The ending scene at the memorial occurs no matter what, but the end credits scene only plays if the game is beaten on Legendary difficulty, revealing the Chief and Cortana’s fate and ending the original trilogy beautifully.
