#10: “Sonic Heroes” (2003)

Sometimes Sonic’s powers alone aren’t enough to take on Doctor Robotnik. Thankfully, in this game, you get to control four teams of three characters, each with different abilities. We love getting to play with some of the less famous characters in the series, like Vector the Crocodile and Charmy Bee. They’re perfect for zipping through the game’s 14 levels.

#9: “Sonic Adventure” (1998)

10 Times Sonic Infiltrated Other Games

Sega Gamers were so excited about this title when it was released that some thought it could save the struggling Sega Dreamcast. Though it didn’t, it’s still an amazing game. It was a huge leap forward for the series, as it featured multiple characters which unique abilities, from fan favorites like Sonic, Tails and Knuckles to one character we’d like to throw in a meat grinder, stupid … Big the Cat. There’s a lot of variety over the almost 50 play areas kept us busy for countless hours.

#8: “Sonic Advance 3” (2004)

Top 20 Worst Sonic Games

It’s the only Game Boy Advance-exclusive title on our list, but that’s far from the only thing that makes it stand out. Though the series often emphasizes teamwork, this game takes it to another level by having secondary characters support you through Tag Actions, which allow you to take advantage of their skills. We’ll never forget cooperating with our buddies through the GBA’s link cable multiplayer.

#7: “Sonic Generations” (2011)

Top 10 Worst Sonic Games: Best of Watchmojo

The series has a long history, and this game captures it perfectly. The levels come from the games’ 20 year history and feature bosses from earlier titles. Play as Classic Sonic, and experience the iconic 2D side-scrolling gameplay, or play as Modern Sonic for a contemporary feel. It’s sure to bring back your childhood memories of 16-bit fights against Eggman.

#6: “Sonic the Hedgehog” (1991)

The 10 HARDEST Levels in Sonic Games

This is the one that started it all, and it’s not hard to see why it sparked our love for the blue hedgehog. The fast-paced side-scrolling gameplay won gamers over instantly and had us taking out our enemies with countless spin attacks. We’d do whatever it took to get our hands on the Chaos Emeralds and stop Robotnik from taking over the world.

#5: “Sonic Colors” (2010)

The 10 HARDEST Bosses In Sonic Games

After dealing with a string of horrible Sonic games prior Sega finally got it right by combining 2D side-scrolling and 3D third person perspectives, with an experiment of going back and forth between the two. The result is great for getting Sonic through the bizarre amusement park where Eggman enslaved the alien Wisps. The Wisps’ addition to the hedgehog’s powers helped us use his abilities in ways we never thought possible.

#4: “Sonic Adventure 2” (2001)

Also in:

The 10 WEIRDEST Sonic Games

The follow-up to the first adventure managed to improve on its successor greatly. In this game, it’s easier to get around, and the camera mechanics got better, (save for Knuckles and Rouge’s levels). Whether you’re playing the Sonic and Shadow speed levels, or the Tails and Eggman shooting missions, or even getting into breeding the cute Chao’s you’re sure to have a lot of fun.

#3: “Sonic 3 & Knuckles” (1994)

Top 10 Worst Sonic Games

This game was originally developed together with “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.” ”If you use the “Lock-on technology” feature, you can put both cartridges in the Genesis at the same time and play through them as one game, By doing this, you can use characters that don’t appear in the other game to access hidden areas. The games were also notable for introducing Knuckles to the series. And unofficially having Michael Jackson work on the soundtrack.

#2: “Sonic CD” (1993)

Top 10 Sonic the Hedgehog Stages

In “CD,” Sonic’s fangirl Amy Rose was introduced into the series, as were some awesome gameplay features. The time travel system allows you to go between different time periods within levels by maintaining a fast speed and hitting posts labeled “past” or “future.” No matter where you are in time, the detailed backgrounds are gorgeous to look at. The techno score is the perfect soundtrack to the furious action. Before we get to our number one, let’s take a look at some honorable mentions: “Sonic Unleashed” (2008) “Sonic Lost World” (2013) “Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood” (2008) And sadly Sonic has not have a perfect run so we’re giving a dishonorable mention to the game that ruined his reputation. “Sonic the Hedgehog” (2006)

#1: “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” (1992)

Top 10 Hardest Sonic The Hedgehog Levels

Taking the top spot is Sonic’s iconic second outing. And our choice for the #1 Sega Genesis game as well, we loved the larger levels, speedier gameplay, and Super Dash Attack that this game added. It also introduced Tails, who became among the most iconic characters in the series. The title helped Sega catch up with Nintendo in the Console Wars, and it assured Sonic’s place in gaming history.
