VOICE OVER: Peter DeGiglio WRITTEN BY: Joshua Garvin
In space, no one can hear you scream... Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the biggest, baddest alien monsters from movies. Our countdown includes creatures from movies “Godzilla”, "Nope", “Little Shop of Horrors” and more!

#10: Bugs

“Starship Troopers” Franchise (1997-)
Adapted from Robert A. Heinlein’s novel of the same name, Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 film chronicles a future war with an alien species known as ‘Arachnids’, or more colloquially, ‘bugs’. While the film has since been interpreted as a satire of militarism and fascism, it's mainly a gloriously 90’s popcorn monster fest. Coming in a variety of shapes and sizes, the giant bugs resemble real world insects, adding an eerily familiar feeling to their terrifying forms. The Warrior Bugs make quick work of human soldiers with their spear-like legs, while the Tanker and Plasma Bugs fire acid and plasma respectively. Making them even more formidable, there’s intention and intelligence behind what they do, thanks to the telepathic Brain Bugs commanding them on the battlefield.

#9: Audrey II

“Little Shop of Horrors” (1986)
This horror comedy has been in a movie-to-theater and back adaptation spiral since 1960. The 1986 musical film stars Rick Moranis as Seymour, a young florist in New York who comes into possession of a sentient houseplant that thrives on human blood. He names it Audrey II, but soon comes to regret his relationship. Audrey II is a man-eating killer alien from outer space who hopes to spread its seedlings around the world. Seymour is only a pawn in its plans to conquer the earth. Suffice it to say, Audrey II is the only entry on this list with a great set of pipes.

#8: Xenomorph Queen

“Alien” Franchise (1979-)
In 1979, movie audiences learned that, in space, nobody can hear you scream. When James Cameron took over the “Alien” franchise in 1986, he upped the stakes. Not only did Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley have to face a horde of xenomorphs, she also had to face their mother. The Alien Queen is the pinnacle of Xenomorph evolution - laying eggs that spawn face-huggers, which impregnate other species with baby xenomorphs. But she’s not just some idle functionary consigned to the nursery. She’s larger, stronger, and smarter than her children, whom she can communicate with and command. An alien Queen is the absolute last thing you want to run into in the bowels of a dark abandoned space colony!

#7: Ogdru Jahad[a]

“Hellboy” (2004)
The big baddies of Guillermo del Toro’s first “Hellboy” film are the Ogdru Jahad, alien elder gods inspired by H. P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos. Frozen in deep space for eons, they wait for Hellboy to free them and open a portal to Earth. After the portal is closed again, he must fight their spawn, the Behemoth. Even this offspring of the Ogdru Jahad could grant Rasputin immortality and give Hellboy a run for his money. The motives of the Ogdru Jahad are beyond human comprehension and their power is incalculable. There was no real way for Hellboy to destroy them, only prevent their appearance on earth. Had he failed, humanity would have been doomed

#6: Sandworms

“Dune” Franchise (2021-)
Known to the Fremen[b] as Shai-Hulud, these massive sandworms inhabit the desert sands of the planet Arrakis. The creatures are so large, so powerful, and so important that - to the Fremen - they represent the physical embodiment of God. Sandworms are tremendous, with may reaching 1,300 feet in length. Paul Atreides rides one that’s even larger. They’re territorial, drawn to vibrations on the desert surface and consuming any creatures or vehicles they find. Their lifecycle is essential to the creation of the hallucinogenic narcotic known as Spice: an essential ingredient for interstellar travel. In addition to their size and power, the sandworms’ existence is a necessary component of galactic civilization.

#5: Clover

“Cloverfield” Franchise (2008-)
Filmmaker J. J. Abrams first unveiled his Cloverfield Franchise with a viral marketing campaign. It took a decade to unveil the nature of the creatures in his universe: a series of dangerous experiments on a space station leave earth vulnerable to incursion from aliens from alternate realities. One of those creatures is the alien kaiju from the original 2008 film. The monster lands in the waters just outside New York City - along with smaller parasitic creatures. Over the course of the film, we follow found footage tracking an attempted escape from the carnage. Even though the creature is seldom seen, it had a big impact on viewers, who are still hopeful for a direct sequel.

#4: Jean Jacket

“Nope” (2022)
At its core, Jordan Peele’s alien creature feature “Nope” shows the importance and dangers of our obsession with spectacle. The alien ‘spaceship’ in the film is actually just a giant animal that eats any creatures who look at it. It’s a deep examination of the nature of perception - what is real? What are we really seeing? Is our gaze dangerous? It’s also just a really great monster movie featuring an imaginative and terrifying alien that’s more Jaws than Godzilla. Jean Jacket - named after an unruly horse - is essentially an alien jellyfish. Everything about its physiology is designed to create a spectacle, luring its spectators to a grizzly demise.

#3: King Ghidorah[c]

“Godzilla” Franchise (1954)
This three-headed dragon first appeared in 1964, and has been pushing Godzilla and other giant monsters to their absolute limits ever since. While King Ghidorah’s origin story has changed in different iterations, in several incarnations, including the MonsterVerse, he’s an extraterrestrial who falls from the stars and threatens Earth’s natural order. Although each of its heads has a different personality, Ghidorah exudes pure menace, power, and dread. In addition to its size and ability to fly, Ghidorah can generate electrical storms and lightning. In “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” it took three fights to take Ghidorah down. The second attempt nearly cost the great lizard his life.

#2: Ego the Living Planet

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” (2017)
Ego the living planet is an alien, celestial being played by a shockingly scary Kurt Russell. Utilizing his trademark charm, Russell plays the infinitely powerful being as a charismatic sociopath. Ego is disappointed by ‘lesser forms of life’ and makes the decision to remake life in his image. He sends an anthropomorphic avatar from civilization to civilization, planting seeds of his essence into the soil. He also mates with each species, hoping to create a child that shares his power. With their powers combined, he can trigger his seedlings, spreading himself across the universe. Ego’s only weakness is his own power, making Peter Quill the only being in the universe capable of defeating his father.

#1: Exogorth

“Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back” (1980)
The Star Wars universe is replete with strange and powerful aliens. One of the most infamous is the Sarlaac, a monstrous, pit-dwelling creature that digests its prey over a thousand years. Even more terrifying, however, is the Exogorth. The sentient space slugs hide inside the cracks and crevices of asteroids, making them the bane of spacecraft attempting to make their way through asteroid belts. Their tough, rocky exteriors shield them from the vacuum of space. So large they are that their massive bodies harbor entire ecosystems within a complex system of internal tunnels and caverns.
