Top 10 Memes of 2023

Who knows what makes some jokes so popular. Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting our picks for down the Top 10 Memes Of 2018. We're looking at the most widespread internet gags that took off in 2018, and had us laughing again and again. We're basing our choices on a mix of staying power, popularity and just how funny each meme is.

#10: Alexa Play Despacito

Building on the “this is so sad” meme, Tumblr user Bisexuael decided to throw Amazon Echo’s Alexa into the mix, posting: “This is so sad Alexa play Despacito”. While “This is so sad” parodied over-the-top online content intended to tug on the heartstrings, Bisexuael’s update added completely out-of-place songs. Some variations switched around depressing events or song titles, and others referenced every famous fictional death they could, from those in 'Black Panther' to those in games like 'Nier: Automata.' Thanks to its easily adaptable template and the popularity of 'Despacito' on its own, 'Alexa play Despacito' is still making us laugh.

#9: Change My Mind

Conservative comedian Steven Crowder pushed a lot of people's buttons with a sign that read 'Male Privilege is a Myth, Change My Mind.' While Crowder usually promotes conversations from opposing sides, his stunt in this case was seen as trolling and inspired a barrage of photoshop parodies, with the sign changed to say that Steven’s mug was full of pee, or that “Pineapple belongs on pizza”. Social media influencers bumped the meme using hashtags and blank copies of the picture, and users began to combine other popular memes too. By turning a troll into the butt of his own joke, 'Change My Mind' is satisfying on every level.

#8: Krusty Krab vs. Chum Bucket

The ‘SpongeBob’ restaurants Krusty Krab and Chum Bucket make the perfect contrast, thanks to the clear superiority of the Krusty Krab. In meme form, the comparison has been used to compare Marvel and DC, pancakes and waffles, and other TV shows. Though the joke peaked in 2018, it's been traced back to a similar image of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton from 2016. One meta example also saw miniature versions of the 'SpongeBob' restaurants in place of the actual corporate logos. The broad humor of the show has spawned dozens of memes that viewers can understand instantly.

#7: American Chopper Argument

The Teutul's over-the-top argument about tardiness stood out on 'American Chopper' for its intense emotional outrage. The family's ridiculous bickering re-emerged as an exploitable photocomic series debating everything from 'Lord Of The Rings' to philosophy. All the intellectual and wholesome interpretations of their dispute just made their anger seem funnier. People even re-imagined the fight as over a simple request to move a chair. The family loves the meme and are happy that fans are using their outbursts in such innocent ways. The 'American Chopper Argument' brought a levity back to arguments that people needed in 2018.

#6: Squinting Woman

Kalin Elisa was doing a photo shoot for Instagram when she made an exhausted face that was too iconic to delete. Elisa decided to upload the funny moment to her Twitter, where it was shared more than her 'good' photos. Kalin's emotive look was so relatable that it grew into a meme for anything that left people tired, squinting or painfully baffled. Though she claims it's messed with her Tinder game, Elisa has continued sharing versions of the picture, using it as her profile image on Twitter and embracing the moniker “SquatBae”. In a year that left us exhausted, Elisa accidentally showed what everyone felt.

#5: Evil Patrick (aka Savage Patrick)

In the episode 'Nature Pants,' a crazed Patrick sports the world's most sinister expression while chasing SpongeBob. The close-up of Patrick's smirk started circulating in early 2018, linked to various malevolent situations. Strangely the meme gained a lot of popularity through jokes about gross sexual behaviour. 'Evil Patrick' became best known however for representing people's inner selves when they were doing things they know they shouldn't. Vice even argued that the meme was a bleak reflection of how negative people are. Whatever the reason is, Patrick's face is now a calling-card for troublemakers.

#4: Is This a Pigeon?

20 Memes That Ruined People's Lives

In 'The Brave of Sun Fighbird' the oblivious android Yutaro mixes up a butterfly with a pigeon. Stills of this scene circulated the web as early as 2011, having misidentified it as an example of a translation fail. The meme was revived in 2018, as users started to play around again with the words in the frame and pictures within it. Netflix cemented the joke's success when it used it to comment on how many 28-year-old play teens on TV. Since then, even politicians have used it to question outrageous rhetoric. With all the buzz around fake news, 'Is This a Pigeon?' is wildly relevant yet again.

#3: The Tide POD Challenge

Before 2018, detergent pods caused so many Poison Control calls that Procter & Gamble redesigned their packaging. The candy-like look of the inedible detergent gave rise to a wave of 'forbidden snack' memes in which people obsessed over eating them, and January 2018 saw internet users challenging each other to eat Tide PODS on camera. Tide's social media team was working overtime directing people to Poison Control, and the company launched a PSA within a week. Even Tide's Eco-Box faced criticism for looking like box wine. While it's unclear how many people actually ate PODS, it's crazy how far this craze went. And for the record, you should absolutely NOT eat Tide Pods.

#2: Yodel Boy

Yodelling hadn't been particularly popular for a while, but Mason's Ramsey's Walmart performance changed all that. As part of his gig as a Hank Williams impersonator, Mason Ramsey would cover 'Lovesick Blues' a cappella. A clip of him singing went viral, inspiring remixes into EDM and trap. Soon Ramsey was edited into movies, old commercials and even ongoing memes. His fame snowballed into a minor musical career and gave an insane streaming boost to the original song. With his anachronistic style and amazing singing, 'Yodel Boy' was so unique that he stuck with us. Before we get to our top pick, her are a few honorable mentions: Steamed Hams Swole Kardashian Young Thug At The Computer What Your Child Is Texting About Off Ramps

#1: I Don't Feel So Good

Spider-Man's fate in 'Avengers: Infinity War' left fans distraught, and the emotional moment popularized the phrase 'I Don't Feel So Good.' Fans started using a particle effect to send off SpongeBob and even Stan Lee himself. People also both commemorated and lampooned cancelled shows, expired memes, and disgraced celebrities the same way. The Disintegration Effect had taken off in 2017 using the same dissolve photoshop technique, but 'I Don't Feel So Good' brought it to new levels of memeness thanks to the insane success of 'Infinity War' and an extremely versatile idea.
