Top 10 Anime for Fantasy Fans

Good anime casts a spell on its viewers – especially when these characters are onscreen. Join http://www.WatchMojo.com as we count down the Top 10 Anime Wizards. For this video, we’re looking at wizards in anime TV series that are especially powerful, skillful or impressive. No movies, so sorry, Howl. Magical beings specifically identified as witches are also excluded, but female wizards who are not identified as witches however can still be considered.

#10: Kazuma Kannagi “Stigma of the Wind” (2007)

Kazuma comes from a family of beings with an impressive ability to control fire – an ability he lacks. Exiled from the family, he instead becomes a master at controlling the wind. Kazuma is a complex character, arrogant on the one hand yet caring and sensitive on the other. Yet whatever he is feeling, he possesses magical control of the winds that places him on a plateau far above those around him. When he is in touch with the Wind Spirit Lords, he is virtually indestructible – but such contact places a tremendous strain on his physical body.

#9: Margery Daw “Burning Eyed Shana” franchise (2005-12)

Of noble birth, Margery has developed intense magical powers, which make her a force to be reckoned with. She is able to store useful objects in a bookmark, which also greatly enhances her ability to communicate with others. However, it is her use of spell-based magic that truly sets her apart. Using nursery rhymes as a foundation, she can draw up forces that kill or maim her foes. Her flaming robe turns her into a werewolf, enabling her to fly and increasing her powers several times over.

#8: Merlin “The Seven Deadly Sins” (2014-)

A member of the Seven Deadly Sins, an order of cruel and barbarous knights, Merlin represents the Sin of Gluttony. Generally regarded as the most powerful wizard in Britannia, Merlin’s powers are many and various. She is capable of creating lifelike illusions, including the appearance of an entire army. The wizard can also fly, teleport herself or others, limited healing power and astonishing resistance to the spells of others. Having studied magic with demons, her powers are pitched to an especially high level.

#7: Aladdin “Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic” franchise (2012-14)

In the “Magi” series, four powerful wizards must keep the world safe from evil forces. Aladdin, son of King Solomon and Queen Sheba, is one of those wizards. He doesn’t look like much: he’s short, even for a kid, and seems a bit naïve. But when push comes to shove, Aladdin shows that he has the right stuff. His genie helps out a lot, but Aladdin also has control over heat, water, wind and gravity. And he has a supply of tools that helps him access even more abilities. Cross the little guy at your peril.

#6: Natsu Dragneel “Fairy Tail” (2009-)

Also in:

Top 10 Fairy Tail Fights (Ft. Todd Haberkorn - Voice of Natsu!)

A dragon slayer with a tough attitude and a tendency to act first and think later, Natsu is also a wizard of great power. His magical powers derive from the fire dragon, and thus flames and fire are easy for him to command. Sometimes he simply lets fire engulf his body; other times, he shapes it into a sword, a horn, or a claw. Natsu also has gained control over lightning as the series has progressed, and this has made him even more of a force. He’s great to have as a friend, terrible to have as an enemy.

#5: Slayn “Record of Lodoss War” franchise (1990-98)

The Lodoss War series features classic fantasy elements, including a group of adventurers with a mission. Every adventuring party needs a wizard and Slayn is a down-to-earth guy whose humble manner belies his substantial command of magical powers. A good and sober friend, Slayn is intent on doing the right thing. This makes him an especially valuable ally as the storyline of the anime plays out, making good use of his ability to cast powerful spells and create convincing illusions as needed.

#4: Sieg Hart “Rave Master” (2001-02)

We often speak of there being four elements – earth, air, fire and water – but this wizard’s ability extends beyond these four. He also controls other elements that are defined as ether, nether, poison, plasma, magnetism, energy, light and darkness. Hell, when he tries, he can even extend his control into the very realms of time and space. With all these abilities at his fingertips, is it any wonder he makes our list? Fortunately, Sieg Hart is one of the good guys. Just imagine what would happen if his powers belonged to a purveyor of dark magic.

#3: Fai D. Flourite “Tsubasa Chronicles” franchise (1900)

Also in:

Top 10 Unexpectedly Amazing Anime Fights

Enigmatic and seemingly carefree, Fair D. Flourite’s happy-g-lucky attitude masks a very serious persona – and makes one forget how powerful a mage he actually is. Unlike most magicians in the Tsubasa world, he is able to travel through multiple dimensions without harm. A curse placed upon him years ago tends to hamper his powers, but even when not at full strength, he can summon up mighty magic that can defeat all but the most powerful foes. Fai has a tragic backstory which helps explain his magical ability - but going into it would involve too many spoilers.

#2: Rin Tohsaka “Fate/Stay Night” franchise (2006; 2011-15)

Also in:

Top 10 Biggest Douchebags in Anime

Raised to be a supreme mage, Rin Tohsaka made many personal sacrifices to achieve this status. And those sacrifices come with a cost. While her public persona is serious and prim, when she lets her hair down she can be loud, authoritative and contrary. None of which affects her ability as a magician. She has control over the five elements in “Fate/Stay Night” – fire, earth, wind, water and ether. She tends to store her magic in jewels and use these gems to summon forth her powers at the desired time – with dire consequences for those who oppose her. Before we reveal our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions: Clow Reed “Cardcaptor Sakura” (1998-2000) Yura Keikain “Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan” (2010-11) Fate Averruncus “Negima!” franchise (2005-11) Hakaze Kusaribe “Blast of Tempest” (2012-13)

#1: Lina Inverse “Slayers” franchise (1996-2009)

Also in:

Anime Duel: Lina Inverse Vs Gray Fullbuster

The no-nonsense heroine of the “Slayers” series tops the list, and with good reason. The self-proclaimed magical genius has an amazing grasp of magic and an ability to use that magic in quite effective means. Not content with a thorough knowledge of black magic, Lina has become well-versed in white magic and shamanism as well. Combined with a number of Demon’s Blood Talismans, this enables her to access a staggering array of spells. She may not look as fearsome as some other wizards – but looks can be very deceiving. Agree with our choices? What other mighty mages of the anime world should we have included? For more enthralling top 10s published daily, be sure to subscribe to WatchMojo.com.
