Top 10 Anime About Magic

Looking to dabble in a little magic? These are the shows to check out. Welcome to Watchmojo.com and today we're counting down our picks for the top 10 Magic related Anime.
For this list we'll be looking at anime series that focus on the concept of magical abilities. And for the record we'll be leaving Fullmetal Alchemist out of this list because Alchemy is categorized moreso as a science rather than magic.

#10: "Slayers" (1996)
Lina Inverse is a powerful sorcerous who traverses the world taking on the likes of evil bandits, all to fulfill her insatiable love for food and money. While dealing with a group of scoundrels, keen to recover their stolen treasure from her, Lina is needlessly 'saved' by a strong but not-so-smart swordsman named Gourry Gabriev. Unbeknownst to Lina, a magical item is among her most recent loot, one which may be the deciding factor in the fate of the world.
#9: "Irregular in Magic Highschool" (2014)
In the not too distant future Magic has become commonplace and, having been integrated into modern day technology, it is now being taught as a technical skill. In "First Magic Highschool" Tatsuya Shiba finds himself in the lower 'Weed' section of the course rather than the higher 'Blooms' due to his low entrance exam scores. Despite his lower placement however, Tatsuya possesses incredible combat abilities and unique magical skills which quickly proves that his 'Bloom' peers have completely underestimate him.
#8: "Overlord" (2015)
What if the game you dedicated most of your life to became reality? The Powerful Wizard Momonga decides to wait it out in the final closing moments of the popular online game Yggdrasil. What he doesn't expect is that he'll soon be transformed into the image of his skeletal video game character and brought into a brand new world. With his once-NPC-servants by his side, Momonga strives to take control over this world in hope that he can uncover the truth.
#7: "A Certain Magical Index" Franchise (2008-11)
Having a psychic level of 'rank zero' in an advanced city full of espers may sound like you've got the short end of the stick, but for our hero Kamijou Touma this turns out to be a blessing in disguise. With the mysterious power 'Imagine Breaker' in his right hand Touma is not only able to negate all magic skills but also supernatural powers as well. This powerful ability especially comes in handy once Touma meets a strange girl known as Index, which catapults him right in the middle of a war between magic and science.
#6: "Little Witch Academia" Franchise (2013-17)
The Luna Nova Academy is a prestigious magic school dedicated to teaching aspiring witches. When a young Atsuko Kagari attends the Magical Festa, a show hosted by a witch known as Shiny Chariot, she is inspired to become a 'cool' witch just like her. She soon discovers that her new school life isn't what she expected and even her beloved idol is mocked among her fellow students. Having come from a non-magical family Atsuko is quite the underachiever, but her love for magic allows her to wield the powerful Shiny Rod, the very same magical staff used by Shiny Chariot.
#5: "Magi" Series (2012-14)
Having been isolated within the Room of Fortitude for most of his life, a young boy named Aladdin is eager to explore the world. Aladdin meets an ambitious young man named Alibaba who is keen on exploring mysterious Labyrinths known as Dungeons, which house incredible treasures. After traversing one of these, Aladdin discovers the truth behind his magi identity and soon finds himself in the center of wars between powerful, magical nations.
#4: "Cardcaptor Sakura" (1998-2000)
After finding a mysterious book in her basement, Sakura Kinomoto accidentally unleashes the magical 'Clow cards' across the world. Also emerging from the book is Keroberos, a small lion-like creature who proclaims himself to be the guardian of the cards and uses the key of seal to grant Sakura the title of 'Cardcaptor'. With her new powers the young heroine is tasked with recovering the missing 'Clow Cards' while at the same time maintaining a normal every-day life.
#3: "Fairy Tail" (2009-16)
Natsu Dragneel is a carefree but reckless mage who, in his quest to find his dragon foster father, meets the young celestial mage Lucy Heartfila, who's dream is to become a full-fledged mage and join the 'Fairy Tail' guild. To Lucy's surprise, Natsu reveals to her that he is, in fact, a member of this famous guild and invites her to join. Here, she quickly befriends both Gray Fullbuster, a ice wielding wizard and Erza Scarlet, a strict sword magic user and together as a crew they set out on a grand adventure, helping those in need and battling against fearsome foes.
#2: "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" (2011)
Madoka Magica is not a show to judge from its initial looks, as being a magical girl is not all fun and games in this dark tale. Madoka Kaname's normal middle school life comes to an end the day she meets a strange cat-like creature named Kyubey. This unusual being comes with a proposition: form a contract which grants magical powers to fight against witches in exchange for any wish. This too-good-to-be-true offer is fiercely opposed by a mysterious transfer student Homura Akemi, who seems to know more than she's letting on.
Before we reveal our top pick, here are a few honourable mentions:

"Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers" (2015)
"KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World!" (2016-17)
#1: "Fate/Zero" (2011-12)
While Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works is certainly one to watch, Fate/Zero just narrowly edges it out as the better show. Taking place 10 years before the main series, Fate/Zero weaves the path to the original series with a dark and tragic tale. The story revolves around Emiya Kiritsugu, a merciless assassin hired by the Einzbern Family to participate in the deadly Holy
