“I Was a Teenage Exocolonist” (2022)

The 10 Most OVERLOOKED Games of 2022

It isn’t often we find a life sim as special as this, considering we’ve seen stellar titles like “Stardew Valley” conquer the genre almost completely. But “I Was a Teenage Exocolonist” was something else. As the title insinuates, you spend your teenage years on a strange alien planet where you will explore and discover new wildlife while developing relationships with your fellow exocolonists. However, there is more here than just saying the right things to swoon your romantic interest and wandering around without a care in the world. To properly study various subjects, you will need to build the perfect deck and increase your abilities if you are to help your small colony prosper. It achieves that perfect balance of casual fun and challenge while providing unique characters to invest your time in, and those are factors many life sims forget to reach for.

“Rogue Legacy 2” (2022)

Take it from a skeptical purist of the first “Rogue Legacy”, this sequel is far better than it may appear. On the surface, it very much looks like a repeat of the original but with better visuals. On the contrary, “Rogue Legacy 2” comes with a new bag of tricks. Maneuvers require a bit more skill to pull off. New classes like the Ranger offer even more unique ways to play. Challenge rooms feel more fair as they focus more on timed trials than a sheer luck of the draw on characters or abilities. On top of that, it helps get the player rolling on upgrades rather quickly, making room for new players to get into the series. Whether you love platformers or roguelikes, this one was definitely worth your hard-earned cash.

“Save Room” (2022)

If you haven’t guessed by now, yes, someone took the inventory system of “Resident Evil 4” and turned it into a full-fledged game. Spanning across forty levels, “Save Room” tasks you with packing all of your weapons, ammo, and health into a limited space. Aside from fitting everything inside, you will also have to make sure your weapons are all loaded and your health is full before you can close the case. There are a handful of levels that will stump you, too, but stick with it, and “Save Room” makes for a fantastic game to spend an afternoon or evening on. For five bucks, you can’t go wrong with this!

“Potionomics” (2022)

“Potionomics” is one of the most underrated and overlooked games of the year. After her uncle’s death, Sylvia has inherited a flimsy and tattered potion shop…on top of a monumental debt. Her only option is to continue the business and attempt to make the store a success. Brew potions, barter with customers in card battles, and form relationships with other business owners to earn new cards or discover new ingredients. Upon operating for a set number of days, you will then have to compete in battles against a rival potion merchant and show the kingdom you are superior. In addition to fantastic animation and superb writing, “Potionomics” challenges you in managing your time wisely between selling potions, learning new recipes, and hanging out with characters. If you have a Steam account, this is absolutely a game you need to play for yourself!

“Return to Monkey Island” (2022)

Ever since Disney acquired it from its LucasFilm purchase in 2012, “Monkey Island” has been sorely missed. Imagine our surprise when series creator Ron Gilbert came out and announced a brand new game. And it truly is just as brilliant as the previous “Monkey Island” titles. Regardless of how one might feel about the drastic change in artstyle, “Return to Monkey Island” bears the same DNA as its predecessors with its dialogue, humor, puzzles, and of course, plenty of insult sword fighting. And the best part? Just about everyone from the original games reprised their roles (LeChuck is played by Jess Harnell as Earl Boen retired from acting in 2017). Needless to say, “Monkey Island” is back!

“Cult of the Lamb” (2022)

Top 20 Cult Classic Video Games Of All Time

“Cult of the Lamb” has been on our radars since its first reveal in 2021. It's practically “Animal Crossing '' but if all the animals decided to dedicate their lives to a satanic entity instead of fishing and gardening. Recruit new followers, perform sermons, and bring down The Four Bishops of the Old Faith to raise the deadliest and unholiest cult and release The One Who Waits. Learn devilishly powerful abilities and show the world that there is only ONE true god worthy of worship! It's hilarious, it's easy to learn, and it holds a wealth of secrets from minigames to collectibles to keep you busy.

“Vampire Survivors” (2022)

At first, we were somewhat confused by the notoriety “Vampire Survivors” has received. But after a few level ups, we quickly saw why. “Vampire Survivors” is simple in its controls; there are no attack buttons. You only move around and pick up XP orbs, health, and the like. But for every level up, you’ll be given options to increase your offense. Do you buff one of your current weapons? Do you equip a new one to potentially make yourself even deadlier? Regardless of which you’ll choose, you’re left praying and forced to focus on avoiding enemy contact. Survive long enough and you might reach a point where you’re littering the screen with projectiles and holy fire!

“Neon White” (2022)

We’ll be straight up with you: “Neon White” has an incredibly weeb-y story. Like, it's almost unbearable. However, the gameplay is so much fun that it outweighs that one negative. Speedrunning is the name of the game here. While you can beat levels in a minute or two when playing the normal way, you might notice alternative paths and maneuvers to shave your time down to a matter of seconds. Few FPS games can nail platforming challenges in a way “Neon White” accomplishes, and it's why we can tolerate the narrative.

“Nightmare Reaper” (2022)

Another Top 10 Nightmare Fuel Video Games

This truly is the best FPS game we’ve played in years. We’ve advocated for “Nightmare Reaper” a few times already, and even after some of the other FPS games that have come out since, it still is the best FPS game of the year. As a young woman wages war with her inner demons and tries to escape the asylum that’s imprisoned her, you’ll grab hold of new weapons to shed more blood in these garish worlds. And just to spice things up, you can take a break from blasting baddies to play minigames based on a variety of classic GBA titles and earn skill and pickup bonuses. And a special shout out to the game’s composer, Andrew Hulshult, for making a kickass soundtrack!

“Nobody Saves the World” (2022)

Top 10 Best Games of 2022 (So Far)

Hailing from Drinkbox Studios, the studio behind the “Guacamelee” games, “Nobody Saves the World” was the indie game that blew everything out of the water for us. As, well, Nobody, you will take on a variety of forms with the power of a magical Star Rod as you explore bizarre dungeons and encounter strange characters. But it isn’t just the personality that captured us; it was the combat, the dungeon-crawling, the way you can mix and match powers from the different forms to create your own unique playstyle. And the music composed by indie rock musician Jim Guthrie is utterly spectacular. If you haven’t already, go play “Nobody Saves the World” right now!
