Superhero Origins: The Falcon

He didn’t just demonstrate that black comic book heroes could succeed, but that they can soar! Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we will explore the comic book origin of Samuel Wilson, otherwise known as The Falcon.

As with most comic book characters, there are often re-imaginations and different versions to a character’s past. We have chosen to primarily follow the storyline, which unfolded in 1969’s Captain America #117, which was expanded upon in issues #118, and #119.

In his first appearance, The Falcon was shown to be living on a remote Caribbean island, the very same one that the Red Skull banished his betrayed former henchmen, now called the “Exiles”.

With the Red Skull having decided to use their hate to his advantage, he used the cosmic cube to swap bodies with Captain America, before banishing the hero to the island as well.

Soon, the Captain (in the Skull’s body) stumbled upon the pack of killers, overhearing their anger at the madman who had trapped them.

Realizing why he had been sent there of all places, the Captain could feel the Cosmic Cube being used to shake the tree he was hiding in. Revealed to the Exiles, the Captain decided that there was no point explaining his predicament, and instead resorted to fighting desperately for his life.

Just as the Red Skull (in Captain America’s body) gloated to himself about the diabolical, plan working, a falcon swooped in and began attacking the Exiles, giving the Captain the opportunity to escape. With the Cap realizing that he could have removed the mask all along, he did so in the hope that the Exiles wouldn’t know the Skull’s true face.

Audiences were then introduced to the man responsible for the Falcon attack, a mysterious man that was happy to have used his animal friend to rob the exiles of yet another victory. As the stranger was set to travel back to his village, the Captain bumped into him, recognizing his falcon and offering his gratitude.

Introducing themselves, the Captain made the observation that his new associate’s accent was from Harlem. Taking the Captain to his home village, the stranger explained that the island was a peaceful place until the Exiles arrived and enslaved everyone, causing him to try to fight back.

When asked about his own origin, the stranger explained that since he was young he was fascinated with birds, specifically falcons. That fascination grew when he was on vacation, meeting his loyal pet Redwing. He then mentioned that he ended up on the island when he read an ad from the Exiles, seeking a Falcon trainer.

Rather then hiring him, they enslaved him. Though he had tried to organize the natives to fight back, he had no weapons. The Cap then suggested to the stranger that he needs to become a symbol in order to mobilize the slaves, and that he could help him become one. With this suggestion, the man decided to go ahead and create the costumed identity of the Falcon.

Following this, the Falcon properly introduced himself as Sam Wilson, a man who had indeed grown up in the slums of Harlem. The two then began combat training, with the Captain passing on many of his fighting skills.

Soon after, the two men mounted an attack on the Exiles. Despite the lack of weapons, the two used their hand-to-hand skills to turn the tables. Proving quicker and more agile then the Exiles believed, the Falcon made short work of his foes, while commanding his pet to help take out the enemies.

Having inspired the natives to join his fight, he became fast friends with the Captain. With the Red Skull witnessing this turn of events, he decided to use the power of the cosmic cube to re-take his true identity. The Red Skull then used the Cube to transport himself, the Falcon and Captain America to his castle in Germany.

There the Red Skull summoned a cage and trapped Falcon’s pet and gave the Captain back his identity.

Despite aiming to kill the two heroes with his unlimited power, they surprised him by working together as a team, managing to distract and defeat the Red Skull. Little did they know that they were helped by the intervention of the supervillain Modok.

Following this, the Falcon became captain America’s occasional partner, and one of Harlem’s greatest crime fighters. It was only years later that the Falcon gained the technology that enabled him to fly, truly becoming like his namesake.

A popular Marvel superhero, the Falcon has appeared in various media and cartoon series. The character finally made his his live action debut when he was played actor Anthony Mackie in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Solder.
