Superhero Origins: Cyclops
Superhero Origins: Cyclops
He is the field leader of the X-Men and is capable of producing devastating beams of energy from his eyes. Welcome to Watchmojo.com, and today we will explore the origins of Cyclops.
As with most comic book characters, there are often re-imaginings and different versions to a character’s past. We have chosen to primarily follow the storyline, which unfolded in the 1963’s “The Uncanny X-Men” (Issue #1) and X-Men Origins: Cyclops (2010).
Growing up in Anchorage, Alaska, a young Scott Summers lost both of his parents in a tragic plane crash.
Also a passenger on the plane, he survived when his mother pushed him and his brother Alex, who would later become the powerful mutant Havok, out with their only parachute.
Unfortunately, the parachute caught fire before touchdown, and the pair fell to the ground. Hitting his head, Scott slipped into a Coma, and suffered brain damage. Due to his brother Alex surviving unscathed, he was adopted while Scott remained comatose for several months, only to regain consciousness and be sent to an orphanage.
Once he hit puberty, Scott’s mutant powers emerged. However his brain damage affected his ability to control the blasts of energy that he could produce from his eyes.
When his powers first emerged, he accidentally destroyed a building's air-conditioning unit. Managing to fire a second blast, he saved the innocent bystanders beneath it. However, the crowd quickly realized that he was a mutant and gave chase. Frightened, he fled. Alone and afraid, he was eventually found by Charles Xavier, and offered the chance to become the first mutant to enroll in his new school for gifted youngsters.
Accepting, he was made the key member and leader of Xavier’s X-Men group, and finally found himself the father figure that he desperately needed.
As one of the X-Men, he was equipped with a specialized ruby quartz visor complete with a fire button that would prevent optic blasts from randomly escaping. Due to its single-lens design, he came to be called Cyclops.
Over the years, more X-men were recruited to the team, and one in particular called Jean Grey caught Cyclops’ eye. Falling madly in love with each other, she became one of the most important people in his life, other than Professor X.
As the second in command behind Xavier, Cyclops has since undertaken his teacher’s responsibilities when absent, and has been in training to one day become Xavier’s successor.
Appearing in the X-Men movie trilogy, a young Scott Summers was finally featured in the film “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”
