Do you prefer Snapchat or Instagram? Sure these two have different functions but there are loyal fans of each social media platform. Now that Instagram has stories, did you convert to an Instagram user? Is Snapchat obsolete now? Our guess is that until Instagram gets its own doggy filter, fans will stay true to Snapchat until then. We've based our criteria on the ability to scroll, hashtags and discoverability, filters, stories and creative freedom.

Round 1: Scrolling

For the most part, people want quick results when it comes to social media. But sometimes there’s no clear “goal,” per se, but rather a desire to catch up with the latest news. With Snapchat, there’s a sense of urgency that doesn’t always pay off. Meaning, users often post mundane daily activities, but try to be clever with the various filters. On the same note, Instagram users are infamous for posting images of food, which no filter can make any more exciting. With that being said, it’s not a big inconvenience to simply scroll down your feed when navigating Instagram, as the platform makes it quite easy to move past the boring stuff to find something else. So while Snapchat can provide for plenty of random and hilarious social media experiences, the average user can easily struggle to navigate the system. However, even the most experienced of users still need to make that first click just to SEE a snap, whereas Instagram allows for a more organic scroll. Then there’s the fact that Instagram also offers a more permanent place to host your photos and videos, whereas Snapchat offers limited accessibility. And that’s why this round is going to Instagram. Instagram 1 / Snapchat 0 WINNER: Instagram

Round 2: Hashtags and Discovering Content

Let’s be honest: not everybody uses social media to “discover” new information. In fact, it’s become somewhat of a personal release for many users, either to express themselves or just to have a connection with the outside world. But technology continues to evolve, and information is power. So, businesses utilize Instagram and Snapchat more than ever to promote their daily content. Incidentally, students utilize such platforms to gather information and to deliver their own personal brand of content. And as Twitter has proven, hashtags can not only make the social media experience more organized, they can literally change the world. With Snapchat, users have the ability to create text in order to figuratively hashtag the moment. Unfortunately, the Snapchat hashtag is more of a concept, and less of a gateway to new information. On the other hand, a simple click on an Instagram hashtag allows users to immediately view images associated with the term or phrase they’re interested in. It may lead to a downward spiral of procrastination, but it can also bring people together, or at least provide more clarity about the hashtag itself. Most of all, the Instagram hashtag represents a highly efficient way to discover information within seconds. Because Instagram’s hashtags help with discoverability and the subsequent popularity of the feature, Instagram takes this round. Instagram 2 / Snapchat 0 WINNER: Instagram

Round 3: Filters

It’s no secret that Snapchat filters are trendy. In fact, some of them are rather impressive and even timely. And Instagram filters can actually be used to enhance a Snapchat image. So once you’ve used both apps, you will probably realize there’s not much that’s very new or exciting about an Instagram X-PRO II filter or even your classic black and white Inkwell. Let’s say this: if you’re looking for a quick way to differentiate yourself from your friends’ amateur photography, then Instagram can certainly help you out. The only problem is that many people on social media can easily identify an Instagram filter, while many of the users pay little attention to the additional editing features that are perhaps more important to experienced photogs. From a pop culture point of view, Snapchat is the way to go, despite the worldwide influx of dog tongue imagery. It’s fun, it’s a bit quirky and Snapchat images can easily be saved to your profile without actually posting them. Round 3 goes to Snapchat! Instagram 2 / Snapchat 1 WINNER: Snapchat

Round 4: Stories

If you’re not familiar with Snapchat, you just may believe that it’s all about posting images that quickly disappear after 10 seconds. But that’s not the case, as the Snapchat “Story” concept was first introduced in 2013, allowing for a more expansive way to chronicle one’s daily activities. And so, in a time when Instagram relied solely on filtered images and 15-second videos, Snapchat allowed users to create an experience for followers over a 24-hour timeframe. Incidentally, this created a more informal type of content creation, yet it still led to a more free-flowing narrative from day to day. In 2016, though, Instagram began mirroring Snapchat by introducing their own “Stories” platform with media also disappearing after 24 hours, and with plenty of perks and advantages, especially with its accessibility. That is, it’s rather easy to click forward, or even backward, while checking out the statistics of your own story sequence. But given that Snapchat Stories came first and has become more popular than ever - and also that Instagram hasn’t introduced anything significantly better - the choice is easy. For storytelling, Snapchat is the way to go and this round’s winner. Instagram 2 / Snapchat 2 WINNER: Snapchat

Round 5: Creative Freedom

For many, social media represents a way to discover information about news, company brands or personalities. Others just want to keep up with their friends and followers. Regardless, both platforms allow for personal creativity, whether it’s for laughs or professional matters. Whereas Snapchat can be an excellent way to promote a personal or business brand, users are limited when it comes to video and image quality. In fact, it’s impossible to post widescreen videos or to post horizontal photos. With Snapchat, it’s all about the vertical image (and video). And while that may not seem like a big deal to amateurs or the average user, anyone vaguely familiar with photography or filmmaking understands the dilemma. In contrast, Instagram offers numerous editing tools, and as of 2016, users can now post videos of up to 60-seconds. One doesn’t need to be interested in the specifics of photography or video to fully appreciate Instagram, but when it comes to quality and artistic design, it’s a no brainer. Sure, Snapchat can be fun, but the images and video can become even more fun when edited via Instagram. With a score of 3 to 2, the winner is Instagram. If you’re more concerned with entertainment and humor, Snapchat has plenty to offer. But for style, substance and versatility, Instagram is the way to go. Instagram 3 / Snapchat 2 WINNER: Instagram Do you agree with our choice? Which platform do you prefer, and why?
