#3: Netflix in Talks to Acquire Paramount’s “Cloverfield” Sequel

It appears that all the delays surrounding the third Cloverfield film have led the movie to Netflix. Paramount’s third installment in the Cloverfield franchise – which was previously titled God Particle – looks like it will be switching over to the streaming service, after the movie had numerous setbacks to the film’s production and release date. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount chairman Jim Gianopulos decided the film didn’t “make the cut.” “He sat down and looked at what was theatrical, what is not in this day and age,” said the website’s source. Other sources go on to say that J.J. Abrams, who closely worked on the previous installments, was too busy on other projects to focus and improve God Particle, suggesting that his upcoming Star Wars movie was top priority. If Netflix does acquire the movie, it would be the first Cloverfield film that wasn’t distributed by Paramount.
#2: Meryl Streep Cast in New Season of “Big Little Lies”
No lies over here. This is really happening. Academy Award winning actress, Meryl Streep has officially joined the second season of HBO’s critically acclaimed series Big Little Lies, and her character has a ton of questions. Playing the mother of Alexander Skarsgard’s abusive Perry Wright, Mary Louise Wright comes to Monterey to ensure the well-being of her grandchildren and to find out what truly happened to Perry after - spoiler alert! – he was revealed to be the character who died in season one. Much of the original cast will return for the new season, writer-creator David E. Kelley will continue to pen the story and Jean-Marc Vallee will rejoin as a producer, but not director. In addition to Streep’s casting, sources say that Zoe Kravitz’s character, Bonnie will also see her parents join the story. It’s been a huge week for Streep, who also earned her 21st Oscar nomination for her role in The Post, more than any other actor or actress in history. The nominations for the 90th edition of the Academy Awards were announced earlier this week, and with them came a number of milestones. Leading the way with a total of 13 nominations, Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water looks poised to take home a number of gold statuettes. Among the movie’s nominations are best picture, best director and best original screenplay. Christopher Nolan’s war epic, Dunkirk scored eight nominations, while Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri earned seven. Two first-time directors in Jordan Peele and Greta Gerwig each earned best director nominations for Get Out and Lady Bird respectively. The two also made Oscar history, with Peel becoming only the fifth black man ever to be nominated for best director, while Gerwig also became the fifth woman to be nominated for the award. And comic book film Logan, which marked the last time Hugh Jackman would draw the claws as Wolverine, became the first superhero movie to ever be nominated for best original screenplay. The show airs March 4th.
