Okay, if she wasn’t already, Meryl Streep is now officially a living legend after being the first actor ever – man or woman – to earn 20 Oscar nominations. This year, Streep starred in the bio film Florence Foster Jenkins, a comedy-drama about a New York heiress, who despite having an awful voice, chases her dream of becoming an opera singer. Critics raved over Streep’s performance, citing her ability to make audiences believe in her character and not pity her despite her clear lack of talent. On top of that, Streep is actually a good singer, so he actually had to learn how to sing badly. Meryl will have some tough competition in search of her fourth statue, but earning more nominations than Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson may be a nice consolation prize.

What would the Academy Awards be without some major snubs, am I right? While a lot went according to plan with this year’s announcement, many were shocked, saddened and maybe even angered by some of the omissions, two of the biggest being Amy Adams snubbed for best actress, and the complete shutout of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool. Many major award bodies had nominated Adams for her role as a renown linguist who communicates with aliens, including the British Academy and the Hollywood Foreign Press. The unlikely success story of Deadpool continued on to the awards circuit as well, where nominations from the Golden Globes and accolades from both the PGA and WGA skyrocketed the film into Oscar talk. #1: La La Land Ties the Record
OSCAR PREDICTIONS! – The CineFiles Ep. 9
It’s almost like it was written in stars. La La Land tied an Oscars record Tuesday morning when it captured a total of 14 nominations, becoming only the third film to do so after All About Eve and Titanic. Golden Globe winner Emma Stone looks to take home a different gold statue this time, being nominated for best actress, while Ryan Gosling looks to nab one for best actor. Damien Chazelle’s follow up to Whiplash has also garnered a best director, best original screenplay and best picture nomination. And of course, what’s a musical without it’s song and dance! Justin Hurwitz landed the film a best original score nomination, while Stone and Gosling’s angelic voices earned two best original song noms – City of Stars and Audition (The Fools who Dream).
