VOICE OVER: Alex Crilly-Mckean WRITTEN BY: Alex Crilly-Mckean
Love is in the air and video games arguably give players more chances at love than in real life! For this list we'll be looking at some of the best romance options in video games that really let players feel the love. In this video we open our hearts to Garrus from Mass Effect, Judy in Cyberpunk 2077, Megaera in Hades and so much more.

“Potionomics” (2022)

Life as a potion shop owner can be tricky and taxing, but one of the major upsides is that it lets you encounter all manner of eager adventures looking to make you their paramour. Such is the case with Xid, the most rock and roll bard you’re likely to meet. She’s chill, down to earth, and fighting to give her songs more meaning to inspire those around her. Serving as her muse not only lets her reach new heights as a musician, but it won’t be long before you’re making sweet music of your own.

Judy

Night City has no shortage of romance options if you’re looking to indulge in some carnal chrome action, but for our eddies, there’s only one that truly captured our hearts. And no, it’s not Keanu. Judy is as sweet as she is spicy, having no other choice but to carve a living for herself in the city’s underbelly. Her subplot is some of Cyberpunk’s best in terms of writing and characterisation. Unwilling to let the world steal her soul, yet always ready to fight in the face of injustice, she had us smitten from the first braindance.

Yennefer

We’re taking a side here, and as much as we enjoy Triss, Yennefer is just way too captivating. Not too hard given her proficiency as a sorceress. As elegant as she is dangerous, Yen is Geralt’s long-lost love, and while their fates were bound by the wish of a djinn, it’s all too clear to see that their relationship is the real magic. Whether it be battling the Wild Hunt, navigating political gauntlets or bumping hips atop a stuffed unicorn, Yen is enchanting in every sense of the word.

Megarea

While many will swear by best boy Thanatos until the day they actually die, there's no escaping from the sensual lethality of this Fury. Whether she’s testing Zagerus’ skills as a boss battle or slowly thawing her ice queen facade with every ambrosia offered, Meg is magnetic. The connection she shares with Zag is genuinely sweet at times. Though rest assured, when she wants to turn up the heat, you won’t be able to resist, whether it be from her voice or her whip. Aphrodite who?

Makoto

Joker may attract the ladies easier than he does actual Personas, but among the roster of confidants willing to give their heart to the Phantom Thief, there’s only one Queen. Not only is Makato a beast on the battlefield, but outside of their Metaverse exploits, she’s also a great companion to be around. Her desire to prove herself, the baggage she carries, her slow willingness to let another help carry the weight. There’s so much to love about her! Plus she rides a motorcycle made of metaphysical nuclear energy. Instant waifu material.

Edelgard

Tragic heroine, unrepentant villain, or something between the two, Edelgard wears many faces throughout all three routes of Fire Emblem’s most celebrated entry. For those that followed the path of the Black Eagle, they weren’t only greeted with a stalwart companion who would do whatever it took to overcome the corruption of both the church and those working in the shadows, but also a whirlwind romance that would endure time-jumps, warzones and everything else thrown at them. Justified in her actions or not, Edelgard was someone we’d happily burn the old world down for.

Garrus

The man, the myth, the calibrator. To say Garrus might just be the most desirable man in the known universe would be an understatement. Starting off as an officer infuriated by his inability to do more, he would soon go on to become one of Shepard’s most loyal crewmates, one that could potentially become something far more over the course of the trilogy. From his sniper skills, to his dance moves, to his iconic voice, to his reach and flexibility, Garrus is the Turian bad boy that caused many a FemShep to fall in love fast and hard.

Camilla

If there’s one thing that Larian Studios excels in – it’s crafting engaging romantic arcs for their characters. As the bastard son of an assassinated Emperor, it falls to the titular Commander to satisfy the political and economical needs of the civilized races…which also happens to involve getting married to a princess. Among the possible contenders for the crown, we happen to find Camilla the most compelling. Yes, the lizard is best girl. Not only because we get to see her prickly attitude believably shift over various interactions, but also her profession as a judge added some much-needed weight and consequence to the whole affair. Law, order, romance and dragons – who would have guessed they went so well together.

He’s a Qunari who likes the simple things in life – fighting dragons, drinking with his Chargers, and breaking beds with a certain Inquisitor. And yet for all that, Bull is so much more than just a walking tank who enjoys playing the dominant in the bedroom. Between his confliction over following the way of the Qun, the hilarious banter, as well as deciding to fully give himself to his precious Kadan, he proved himself to be a fascinating character capable of breaking free of the conventions that had defined him for so long. No wonder so many wanted to ride the bull.

Karlach

Larian strikes again, and this time they gave us one of the greatest characters in modern gaming in the process. Despite being betrayed, sold to a demon overlord, having her heart replaced with an infernal engine that essentially turns her into a time bomb, as well as getting a Mind Flayer tadpole in her head, Karlach remains the most charming and optimistic tiefling barbarian you are ever likely to meet. She’s sweet, she’s endlessly compassionate, and yes, will incinerate anyone who threatens those she loves. No other romance will have you quite literally willing to leap into Hell quite like Karlach.
