Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re going over What to Know Before Playing “Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga”! The next Lego game has been in development for quite some time now, and because of that, we haven’t had a new entry from TT since 2018! So, what should you know about “Skywalker Saga” before its [supposed] launch in Spring 2022?

Story Mode

In case you haven’t heard, much of the hype around “Skywalker Saga” is its extensive story mode. Players will be able to explore all nine of the mainline movies across forty-five levels, all the way from “The Phantom Menace” to the controversial “Rise of Skywalker”. TT is trying to keep everything as close to the movies as possible, so as one would expect, the studio is pulling audio straight from the source material. This was a similar decision they made when making games like “Lego The Lord of the Rings” and “Lego Marvel’s Avengers”. On top of that, TT will be making all nine movies available from the start, allowing players to start with whichever films they are most excited to experience.

New Engine

By now, you’ve probably noticed that “Skywalker Saga” has a different look and feel than any previous Lego game. Characters look more as if real Lego minifigs are moving, and the lighting makes everything feel more immersive than before. This is because TT has scrapped their older engine and built a new one, dubbed “NTT”. This means that we’re finally getting a Lego game being developed on more powerful hardware, which means these games could be taking full advantage of consoles such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.

Encounters

When it comes to exploring open worlds in Lego games, everything is very orderly and just waiting for the player to interact with things. If you want a quest done, go find the character that offers that quest. There was never much life happening besides characters fighting each other and making the same five jokes. This time around, TT will be implementing random encounters to keep exploration exciting. One example that has been tossed around frequently is finding a Star Destroyer jumping out of hyperdrive before sending TIE fighters down to strike you. It certainly is an idea that could spice things up in theory, but hopefully TT will mix in enough unique situations to prevent these from becoming stale and annoying.

Level Design

Speaking of exploration and open worlds, “Skywalker Saga” is going to have a vastly different structure than previous Lego games. Newer Lego games such as “Jurassic World” and “DC Super-Villains” mixed in a somewhat linear structure in guiding players from mission to mission. “Skywalker Saga” aims to take a more non-linear, open world approach. In what ways, we have yet to see. However, it is certainly interesting to see TT strive to bring the IP into a more streamlined formula.

Even if tasks end up being more like a checklist and if random encounters become a little too cumbersome, “Star Wars” fans will have plenty to gawk at with just the scenery alone. Considering how nine movies are being represented, we will have a ton of places to explore, right? Well, “Skywalker Saga” will include a whopping twenty-four planets to visit from Geonosis and Mustafar to Dagobah and Jakku. Every era is being represented here, so whether you love the prequels, the sequels, the originals, or all three eras, there will be plenty for you to explore.

Combat

Another massive change to the Lego formula is in its combat. The most complex Lego games have become with combat have been super move meters and combo counters, but even with that, most enemies are down in one or two hits. Well, folks may find a bit of a challenge ahead. TT has stated that players will now have to utilize light, medium, and heavy attacks in order to defeat enemies. On top of that, enemies will also have health bars. How complex this actually will become is anyone’s guess, but we’re curious to see how many combat elements might be borrowed from other, more action-oriented games such as “God of War”.

Character Grid

At the time of this video, “Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2” holds the record for the biggest character grid in any Lego video game. Alas, that record will be broken as soon as “Skywalker Saga” launches in Spring 2022. Between all nine movies, the game already has a meaty cast of main characters and villains that would quickly surpass the size of even “The Complete Saga’s” grid. But if you want to get more specific, “Skywalker Saga” is said to have a roster of more than three hundred characters. Sure, you can expect the likes of General Grievous and Boba Fett, but what about some of the obscure one-off or background characters? Are we going to be able to lay the smackdown with Watto or pilot an AT-AT with Max Reebo? Can we put the Waitress Droid in an X-Wing and start blasting Vulture Droids?

Droids

Well, since we’re on the subject of droids, yes, let’s talk droids! Past “Lego Star Wars” games never really gave droids much to do. A lot of them moved slowly, were only used to access control panels (or just didn’t do anything), and couldn’t pilot vehicles. The only cool one was IG-88, and that was just because he had Bounty Hunter abilities and was the only droid who could pilot a vehicle! Well, that’s all about to change. Like in “Lego The Force Awakens”, droids will have combat abilities and be able to interpret languages. Best of all, they can finally use vehicles!! FINALLY!

DLC

Every Lego Star Wars Game RANKED

Like almost any other AAA game, “Skywalker Saga” has already had its DLC plans revealed despite the game not even launching yet. Although, it hasn’t really been anything big. One DLC pack will include various characters from the “Star Wars” television shows “The Mandalorian” and “The Bad Batch” as well as spin-off movies “Rogue One” and “Solo”. There is also a second DLC pack planned that seems to hone in on older characters, simply named as “Classic Characters”. So, if, somehow, there is an obscure character from the older films that won’t make it on the base roster, they could show up as DLC.

Platforms

With the new engine in mind, it’s easy to assume that “Skywalker Saga” will be available on modern consoles - the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series XS - as well as PC (which is expected). So, will this be a Lego game to leave folks behind on last-gen hardware? Do not fret if you have yet to nab the newer consoles as “Skywalker Saga” will also be coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It may not look prettier than the newer machines, but here’s hoping there won’t be too many features sacrificed to compensate for the lack of higher power. Even more so, let’s pray we get sixty frames on PS5 and Series XS - we haven’t had that since the old days!
