Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re taking a look at the 10 hardest unlockables across Marvel games!

Uber Cards

“Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects” (2005)

If you’re wanting to fully complete “Marvel Nemesis”, we gotta ask you a very important question: who hurt you? Why are you trying to inflict this kind of stress on yourself? To complete “Marvel Nemesis” means you’ll have to unlock the Uber Cards, and to get those, you’ll have to complete every character’s campaign and earn Gold rank. The big problem with this process is that “Marvel Nemesis” is notoriously unbalanced in both matchups and difficulty. There are comically easy fights that will be immediately followed by a fight you’ll find borderline impossible to get through. It’s so inconsistent that you’re better off just…not playing “Marvel Nemesis”.

Professor X

“X-Men: Mutant Academy 2” (2001)

Unlike “Marvel Nemesis”, “X-Men: Mutant Academy 2” is actually a really fun fighting game. But if you’re wanting to play Professor X, whether seriously or for giggles, you’ve got a gauntlet ahead of you. Professor X is only unlocked once you’ve beat the game with every single character, and yes, that is including the secret characters as well. Depending on circumstances, you may have to do an extra playthrough if you somehow didn’t encounter Spider-Man in those first fifteen playthroughs. Once you beat the game with Spidey, Juggernaut will unlock, and once you win with him, only then will you get to play as Xavier…finally.

Aunt May

“Lego Marvel Super Heroes” (2013)

The process for unlocking Aunt May is rather extensive for a Lego game. Granted, it doesn’t require a 100% completion, thankfully. Even so, you might want a guide if you’re itching to play as the old lady ASAP. First, you will have to grab every single Red Brick in the game, and there is one for every level including the bonus levels scattered around New York City. Once you’ve done that, Deadpool will appear in different spots on the map. Do all three of his missions, and you’ll finally get to play as Aunt May. And nope - she’s got no unique powers aside from swinging her purse around.

Superior Suit

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (2014)

Much like “Marvel Nemesis”, why would anyone want to bother completing this game let alone play it? Regardless what your reason is, if you’re trying to unlock the Superior Spider suit, be prepared for utter mental anguish. To get this suit, you’re going to have to complete all twelve combat challenges. Sounds like it’d be easy if they game was playable. Spoilers - it’s not! “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” runs about as well as a boat engine with Lego bricks inside the tank. Inconsistent frame rates, camera screws up often, and the shoddy lighting can make it hard to comprehend what exactly is going on. So, good freakin’ luck on that suit, Pete!

Silver Surfer

“Marvel Ultimate Alliance” (2006)

For the most part, unlocking characters in “Marvel Ultimate Alliance” is relatively easy. Some require story progression while others require some extra steps. But the Silver Surfer is one that’s bound to cause a migraine. To unlock him, you’ll have to beat every single Comic Book mission. Sounds easy, but the thing about the Comic Book missions is that they don’t have a set difficulty in advance. They are about as hard as your character’s level. So, if you have a low level character, enemies will do about as much damage as you can. If you have a high level character, they’re going to hit like a truck just as you can. Either way, you might be sweating bullets.

2nd License Card

“Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3” (2011)

Of the MvC games, UMvC3 is the toughest game in the entire franchise. Even if you end up using high-tier characters for your team, you might struggle in acquiring the 2nd License Card. To get this, you’re going to have to beat Arcade Mode on Very Hard difficulty. Under this difficulty, you’re going to have to exercise a deep understanding of UMvC3’s mechanics between X Factor, Advance Guard, force-swapping, and how your characters operate. On top of all that, you’ll have Galactus to face at the end, and he can execute some of the most B-S moves seen in the MvC franchise. Very Hard difficulty may as well be called “Impossible” difficulty.

Iron Man

“X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse” (2005)

Whereas the other entries are questionable in whether they’re worth the effort or not, we can attest that getting Iron Man in “X-Men Legends II” is well worth it. Every act in the game hides four homing beacons, and finding every beacon will point you to a hidden location containing a piece of Iron Man’s armor. However, it can be fairly easy to miss these beacons. If you manage to stay vigilant and locate them all, you’ll be able to unlock Iron Man as early as Act 5. Otherwise, you’ll have to beat Apocalypse before you can backtrack and get whatever pieces you missed.

Thanos (Infinite)

“Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order” (2019)

To play as the Mad Titan–er, I mean, “Space Grimace”, you’re going to have to go above and beyond your normal means. You will have to beat “Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3’s” final DLC, “Shadow of Doom”, on the Superior difficulty, which is a massive sweatfest. Now, full disclosure - you can play as Thanos already thanks to the base game containing him as a playable character. But the reason you might want to shoot for Thanos (Infinite) is because he wields the power of the Infinity Stones, granting him enough power to become the most broken character in the game. So, you might want to consider your options here.

Cyber-Akuma

“Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter” (1997)

Seems strange that a non-Marvel character is considered to be a hard unlockable. But hey, if you’re familiar with the nonsense behind “Marvel vs. Street Fighter”, you know where we’re coming from. Cyber-Akuma is locked behind the most difficult playthrough you could possibly tackle: finish Arcade Mode on the hardest difficulty and do so without using a single Continue. Not once. And no, you cannot use Apocalypse to cheese this. It has to be with one of the other characters on the roster. Knowing how fighting games were in the 90’s, good freakin’ luck - you’re going to need it!

Mary Jane

“Spider-Man” (2002)

This may seem like cheating, but we consider it hard if not many people can obtain it. Yes, it is possible to play as Mary Jane in the game based on the 2002 “Spider-Man” movie. In order to play as MJ, all you have to do is go into the Cheat menu and enter “GIRLNEXTDOOR”. But wait - it didn’t work? Then, you may not have the right copy of “Spider-Man”. That’s because only the very first prints of the game had this code integrated. Future reprints took the code out likely because of the possible controversy in having MJ make out with herself in certain cutscenes. Yeah, you know the news channels would have had a field day over that. How it flew under their noses is beyond us.
