#3: Netflix Officially Green-lights “Bright” Sequel

Love it or hate it, it’s happening. With critics panning the movie, and fans praising it, Netflix has made the decision to go ahead with a sequel to David Ayer’s controversial effort, Bright. The film was Netflix’s most expensive production to date, costing an estimated $90 million to make. The film stars Will Smith as a human LAPD officer and Joel Edgerton as his orc partner, who live in an alternate version of earth where magic and fantasy characters co-exist with humans. While the film took a drubbing critically (it only has 28% on Rotten Tomatoes) it reportedly raked in an average of 11 million viewers in its first three days of release. Ayer, Smith and Edgerton are all expected to return for the sequel, but screenwriter Max Landis will not.

#2: Cloverfield 3 Release Date Delayed

Fans of the Cloverfield franchise will have to wait a little bit longer for the story to continue. For the third time, Paramount Pictures has changed the film’s release date from February 2, 2018 to April 20, 2018, leaving fans to speculate on the reasons why. In keeping with Cloverfield lore, producer J.J. Abrams has kept the movie a mystery; even its title is unknown. The working title of God Particle has been dropped, with it now being referred to as “Untitled Cloverfield Sequel.” Some fans via Reddit have theorized that the delay is to release the first trailer during Paramount’s launch of their TV channel on January 18th. Coincidence or not, the date would also coincide with the 10-year anniversary of the first Cloverfield. While details are scarce on the third installment, the movie will star Daniel Bruhl, David Oyelowo and Chris O’Dowd, just to name a few.

Before we get to our final entry, here are a couple new releases:

“Insidious: The Last Key” (2018)
“Molly’s Game” (2017)

#1: The Golden Globe Awards

In what many fans and industry members consider a major precursor to the Academy Awards, The 75th Golden Globe Awards will air this Sunday with Seth Meyers hosting. Known for always including one “what the heck?” entry in the comedy category, The Globes anointed Get Out as is this year’s entry. It’s main competition in the Best Picture, Musical or Comedy race is Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut, Lady Bird. But, with members opting not to nominate Gerwig for director, Get Out just may be the favourite to eek out the win. On the drama side of things, Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk is said to be the director’s best chance at earning top hardware, but Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water and Call Me by Your Name are also very much in the mix. With 14 highly competitive film categories, including for acting, the 75th edition of the Golden Globes is sure to provide shock and awe.
