Top 5 Reasons We Hate Pinterest

Bring on the sugar cravings, low self-esteem and unrealistic expectations. Welcome to MsMojo and today we're counting down our picks for the Top 5 Reasons We Hate Pinterest.
For this list, we’re looking at the reasons why this social media platform can be super frustrating.

#5: The Makeup/Hair Tutorials Look Easy (But They’re Not)

If we see one more list of “5 minute makeup looks,” we’re going to scream. First off, these “super easy” tutorials often require a bunch of products that you don’t have and second, if you’re not a trained makeup artist, there’s no way you’re going to look like the glowy, fresh-faced girl in the photos. The hair tutorials are just as bad, going from one step to the next with seemingly no explanation of how they got there. The trend of photo tutorials makes trying beauty looks way harder than it needs to be, because it excludes many of the small details that are essential to achieving the desired end result.

#4: It Makes You Realize How Single You Are

It’s happened to all of us: you have the ring picked out, the perfect dress scouted and the color scheme set. You’re three hours deep into planning your rustic yet elegant destination dream wedding when you remember that, oops, you don’t have a boyfriend, let alone a fiancé. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the world of Pinterest weddings when there’s seemingly nothing you can do to keep bridal posts off your feed. But frankly, the last thing single ladies need is a reminder that everyone else appears to be getting married, at flawless weddings, to impossibly handsome grooms, while they’re at home… browsing Pinterest.

#3: It Makes You Feel Bad About Yourself

While Pinterest is supposed to be inspirational, sometimes it ends up being quite the opposite. Rather than giving you the drive to prepare perfect Whole30 lunches every day or organize your junk drawers like Marie Kondo, it often just makes you feel guilty for deciding to sit on the couch and watch Netflix. Also, it somehow manages to simultaneously give you cravings for the sweets that scroll by AND feel bad for not making the super healthy low-carb meals displayed right beside them. It’s not very encouraging for anyone to look at super thin models with crazy thigh gaps giving inspirational quotes about how easy it is to life a healthy lifestyle.

#2: The Price Point on Pins Varies (or Takes You Nowhere)

One of the best things about Pinterest is the outfit inspiration. Though it can be fun to scroll through the fashion tags on Pinterest, it’s so frustrating when you come across an item that you just have to have, only to find out it’s made by Chloé and costs $2000. And while that can be annoying, it’s nothing compared to clicking on a photo of a great pair of boots only to be led to someone’s blog which also doesn’t give you a real link to see what the brand and price of them is.

#1: It Takes Up So Much of Your Time!

The old adage about Lay’s potato chips is: “betcha can’t eat just one”, and we think Pinterest might need a similar saying. You know, something like: “betcha can’t log on for 2 minutes without going into a tailspin of wedding planning, room decorating and cupcake making.” With the infinite amount of scrolling you can do, endless click-throughs and inevitable tangents, Pinterest is the perfect tool for procrastination. You can easily get sucked into spending hours looking at makeup tutorials or mason jar DIYs, quickly forgetting what exactly it was that you signed in to explore and learn about in the first place.
