Top 3 Baffling Design Choices In Video Games

Talk About Unnecessary

No video game is perfect, even the ones that we view as masterpieces still have elements to them that annoy us. A lack of fast travel, a bizarre inventory system, annoying respawn sites, the list goes on. However, because they excel in so many other aspects, we’re all too happy to let it slide and just focus on the positives. That being said, when we’re presented with a design choice or mechanic that is so out of left field that it breaks our immersion, then we start to take issue!

Now, we’re not saying that any of these titles are bad by any stretch, but we can’t deny that once these particular facets came into play,  we couldn’t help but feel like we were playing an entirely different game!

#3: Tekken Force
“Tekken” series (1994-2015)

Yes, fighting games have certainly come a long way over the years, to the point where players are expecting decent narratives and an excessive amount of extra content. However, trying to implement a 3D, open area beat-em up section might have been a step too far. We wouldn’t have detested this mini-game so much if it weren’t for the fact that it restricted a character’s techniques and movement, meaning you spend most of your time crawling across the stage trying to land combos like you would normally do in a typical Tekken fight…except the enemies now are outside your peripheral vision. They really should have just stuck to Tekken Bowling.

#2: The Water Temple
“The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” (1998)

Yes, the port to 3DS managed to solve nearly all of the issues the original had, but that still doesn’t change the fact that this legendary game still had one of the most frustrating levels of all time. Having to adjust the amount of water around the stage, missing that same key over and over, having to restart the whole thing again, the constant inventory shuffling, to say it was tedious is a huge understatement. While nothing can spoil the splendour that was arguably Link’s finest hour, this whole section certainly tested players patience to no end.

#1: Fighting Humans
“Dead Space 3” (2013)

What made the first game an instant classic of the horror genre was how it used the claustrophobic environment to weave tension, because you knew that literally any moment that a Necromorph could burst out of the vent and tear us to pieces. While it’s sequel expanded the areas, it still managed maintain a sense of uneasiness and deliver some truly potent scares. You know what isn’t scary? Gunning down waves upon of waves of soldiers with a plasma cutter. The Unitologists may not have stuck around all the way through, but they certainly knew how drain all the dread out of the game along the way. This isn’t COD guys!
