The entertainment industry almost lost one of the most unique voices of the past couple decades. Kevin Smith, best known for writing/directing cult classics like Clerks, Chasing Amy, and Mallrats, is recuperating after surviving a “widow-maker” heart attack.
The filmmaker tweeted about his brush with death on Monday, writing, “After the first show this evening, I had a massive heart attack. The Doctor who saved my life told me I had 100% blockage of my LAD artery (aka ‘the Widow-Maker’). If I hadnât canceled show 2 to go to the hospital, I wouldâve died tonight. But for now, Iâm still above ground!”

Many fans and fellow celebrities have wished Smith a speedy recovery, including Chris Pratt, who tweeted, “Kevin we donât know each other too good but I have loved you since Clerks and Iâm praying my ass off for you cause I believe in the healing power of prayer. Can you please pray with me people!?”

Pratt added, “Praying for you. I will continue to. You inspired me with Clerks when I was a senior HS. Iâm tagging my Lb/rb football coach who showed me the movie cause he believed in me and knew Iâd be inspired.”

Pratt’s tweets were actually met with some controversy for encouraging people to “pray.” Director James Gunn of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies was quick to defend Pratt, however, tweeting, “So I just read Chris Prattâs tweet to Kevin Smith saying he would pray for him & made the mistake of reading the comments, many of which go off on Chris for saying heâd pray. I think people misunderstand the backlash against ‘thoughts & prayers.’ (thread).”

What’s important is that Smith is doing better and even shared a video update regarding his health via TMZ. Filming from his hospital bed, Smith’s words were deeply emotional, as he spoke of his family, friends, and the “incredible f***ing ride” he has had.
Smith currently has a new Jay and Silent Boy movie in the works and recently shared his thoughts on the new Venom teaser.
