A “Free World Action Adventure?”
For a while now, fans have been speculating what Luffy and the Straw Hat’s new video game exploit would be. While the manga and anime are regarded as top tier example of the shounen genre, its back catalogue of video games aren’t exactly anything to rave about since they tend retread itself over and over.
However, this latest project, which until recently was known as Code Name: Dawn, has given fans plenty of reason to be excited. Allegedly, not only will the game allow players to visit the Celestial Dragon’s homeland of Mariejois, but the whole thing will break convention and be open world in nature.
According to an article on Anime News Network –
The 2018 combined second and third issue of Shueisha‘s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine revealed on Monday that the official title for the previously revealed One Piece “Code Name Dawn” video game is One Piece: World Seeker.
The “dramatic free world action adventure” game will ship for the PlayStation 4 in 2018. The game will allow players to freely explore and have adventures in the large world of One Piece. The issue featured screenshots with Luffy as a playable character.
A previous issue of Weekly Shonen Jump had teased that the game will tell the “truth of a tragic event.” The magazine also featured an image of a man in shadow standing in front of a city on fire. The issue described the city as that of the Holy Land Mariejois, adding “who is the person who stands on this absolutely inviolable sacred ground?” The visual also teased an “incident that will shake the power of the world.” In One Piece, Mariejois is the capital of the World Government and is also the land where the Celestial Dragons live.
It’s doubtful we’re going to end up with a game that has Skyrim or Witcher 3 levels of exploration, but considering that the game is a tie-in with One Piece’s 20th anniversary, shouldn’t this go above and beyond what has come before?
