Over the years there have been several Mario-based roleplaying outings, but this is the game that started it all, and it is arguably the best of the pack. Unlike those other ventures into the genre, Super Mario RPG was developed by Square Soft, the studio behind the iconic Final Fantasy series. As the game begins, Princess Toadstool is once again kidnapped by King Koopa and Mario takes off to rescue her. However, he is soon sent flying by a giant sword that has come crashing into the castle. Charged with discovering the purpose of this invader, Mario must form a team, rescue the princess and save the world from a powerful new villain. Some games will live forever as Classics. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be taking a look at 1996’s adventure role-playing game “Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars” for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

Over the years there have been several Mario-based Role-playing outings, but this is the game that started it all, and it is arguably the best of the pack. And unlike those other ventures into the genre, Super Mario RPG was developed by Square Soft, the studio behind the iconic Final Fantasy series.

As the game begins, Princess Toadstool is once again kidnapped by King Koopa. Mario takes off to rescue her, and he soon finds himself engaged in battle with his long-time nemesis. However, just as he finished the fight, a giant sword comes crashing down from the sky and impacts the castle. This causes Mario, the Princess, and Bowser to get blown away in different directions.

Blown all the way back home, Mario decides to visit to the mushroom Kingdom’s Chancellor to plan his next move. There, he is asked to find her, and investigate the origin and purpose of the Giant Sword.

Joining up with a puffball named Mallow, a star spirit named Geno, and even Bowser himself, Mario soon learns that the Sword is the gateway to another world, ruled by Smithy, an evil tyrant who mass produces his minions in a factory. Moreover, his Sword has shattered the Star Road, and sent pieces scattered around the land.

Questing to recover these fragments, the team finds Princess Toadstool, who in turn joins their team, and helps them in their quest to save the world.

Fortunately, Super Mario RPG’s epic story is matched by equally innovative gameplay that appeals to more then just the average RPG fan! Staying true to its Final Fantasy routes, the game does feature turn-based battles. However, it provides a unique difference in its design that sets apart.

Incorporating timed attacks, hitting these button prompts are of vital importance as they can increase the power of your strikes against enemies. Alternatively, you can reduce or avoid damage the same way. As you might imagine, this prevents the game from harboring automatic and tedious turn-based battles.

Further making the game’s combat system appealing is the fact that enemy encounters are never randomly generated. Instead, you always know when enemies are approaching, can avoid them by platforming, and can properly prepare yourself for each encounter.

Filled with a wide variety of items, weapons, costumes and magical upgrades, players will gather experience points while visiting a wealth of spectacular lands, and taking on dozens of side quests filled with tons of humor.

This comedic element includes witty dialogue, and the appearance of several whimsical characters. These include the Axem Rangers, a team that spoofs the Power Rangers; and Booster, an insane character that doesn't understand what tears are, and why they taste so salty.

Available on Nintendo’s Virtual Console for download to the Wii, gamers shouldn’t overlook this top-rated and epic Mario Bros. adventure.
