Some games will live forever as Classics. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be taking a look at 1986’s iconic adventure game Kid Icarus, which debuted on the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Based on ancient Greek Mythology, this iconic adventure stars a young angel named Pit. Trapped in the underworld following the capture of his home, “The Palace in the Sky”, he is chosen to be the world’s savior.

Armed with a magical bow, Pit must use the weapon to escape imprisonment and rescue the light Goddess Palutena from the clutches of the evil Medusa.

Along the way, he must recover three sacred treasures to combat the evil ahead of him. These include the mirror shield, the arrow of light and the Wings of Pegasus.

In addition, he can equip multiple power-ups. These include a protective crystal, flaming arrows, and The Sacred Bow, which has a much longer range.

Combining elements of Nintendo’s three biggest Franchises, Pit can jump like Mario, equip ability enhancements like Link, and shoot enemies like Metroid’s Samus.

Tackling a slew of enemies, Pit must also combat several bosses to progress. While defeating enemies yields him currency hearts, defeating these end-of-level titans gives him more power. However, to recover his health, Pit must find bottles containing the water of life. Furthermore, gamers can save their progress with the help of passwords.

Interestingly, gamers who collect all upgrades and hearts will discover a secret ending, in which the light goddess transforms Pit into a teenager.

A unique journey, Kid Icarus is a unique upward quest from the darkest underground to the heavens themselves that is filled with action and adventure.

Available for Nintendo’s virtual console, it spawned a sequel for the Gameboy 1991 called “Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters”, and a third installment called “Kid Icarus: Uprising” for the Nintendo 3DS following an excruciating two decade-long absence.
