Video Game Classics: Chrono Trigger

Some games will live forever as Classics. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be taking a look at 1995’s adventure role-playing game “Chrono Trigger.”
Originally debuting on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, before being re-released on the original PlayStation and Nintendo DS, it was created by a dream team of lead designers from SquareSoft. These included the visionaries behind their Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball game series.
Chrono Trigger is centered on a group of adventurers who must travel through time to prevent a global catastrophe.
The game takes place in an original world similar to Earth, with its own similar, and vastly different time eras. These come complete with a prehistoric age, medieval setting and bizarre post-apocalyptic future.
Beginning in 1000 AD, players take on the roles of Crono, a silent protagonist with a katana, and his friends Marle, a member of the royal family, and Lucca, a mechanical genius.
As the game opens, Crono and Marle watch on as Lucca demonstrates her new teleporter invention for the Millennium Fair. However, when Marie volunteers to demonstrate, a malfunction hurls her through time. Giving chase they soon discover that their presence has created a grandfather paradox, threatening their timeline. However, aiming to resolve this problem, they soon find themselves in a race to stop the end of civilization itself.
Making their way through time space on a perilous quest, they soon encounter several allies. These include Robo, a robot created to assist humans, Ayla, the chief of a prehistoric village, and Frog, a former Squire.
Aside from allies, the group must gather information and equipment to help them, including a time-machine vehicle known as “Epoch.”
Featuring standard RPG mechanics, Chrono Trigger brought several innovations to the fans of the genre. These included eliminating random encounters, and having battles take place directly on the field map, rather than a separate battle screen.
Immediately successful upon release, it has gone on to become considered one of the greatest video games of all time. This is due to its inclusion of 13 different endings, plot-related side quests, incredible character development, unique battle system and detailed graphics.
The most highly demanded game for the Wii virtual console, Chrono Trigger remains one of the most beloved retro gaming experiences ever made.
