Believe it or not, 6ix9ine is not what’s on the rapper’s birth certificate. His name is Daniel Hernandez. Despite having already released music, he rose to viral prominence in July 2017 after posting a picture to Instagram. His rainbow hair and teeth and glaring “69” face tattoos instantly made him a meme, and the rest is history. He has explained that the 6ix9ine moniker was created as a metaphor. He wrote on Instagram: “You just haven’t seen life from my perspective. Turn the 6 upside down it’s 9 but remains the same in a different perspective. Open your mind and heart.” Surprisingly insightful, coming from a guy with rainbow teeth.

#4: He Has Had Several Run-Ins with the Law

6ix9ine is no stranger to controversy and legal issues. We’ll address the elephant in the room first. In 2015, 6ix9ine posted various videos online in which he and an accomplice perform various sexual acts with a nude 13-year-old girl. He pleaded guilty to the “Use of a Child in a Sexual Performance” and faces up to three years in prison if his plea deal arrangements are not met. Before he became famous he served time in jail for selling heroin and the assault of a bodega owner. He was arrested yet again in July 2018 on an outstanding warrant from Texas, which claims that 6ix9ine choked a 16-year-old boy at a Houston mall.

When you think of the hottest rappers in the game, 6ix9ine is probably not the first name that comes to mind. But that doesn’t stop him from thinking that he’s the absolute hottest rapper in New York. While appearing on New York’s hip hop radio show The Breakfast Club, 6ix9ine deemed himself as the hottest rapper in the city; a city that includes Cardi B. 6ix9ine directly addressed Cardi, saying, “What she got? That Bodak Yellow song? […] Every song I put out makes the Billboard Hot 100. […] It’s not no competition. What do you guys think? Is 6ix9ine the king of the Empire State, or what?

#2: He Is Involved in Numerous Feuds

Turns out that a lot of people don’t like 6ix9ine, especially Lil Reese, Chief Keef, and Trippie Redd. These feuds aren’t surprising, given 6ix9ine’s penchant for shock value. Redd has called 6ix9ine a pedophile and tried to spread a rumor that he was a closeted homosexual. The two frequently insult each other on Instagram Live, and Redd was jumped in New York by people allegedly connected to 6ix9ine. In July 2018, 6ix9ine himself was jumped, pistol-whipped, kidnapped, and forced to give his assailants $750,000 in custom jewelry. While this may be just a random act of violence, it could also be a product of an ongoing feud. The details are unclear.

#1: He’s Had Eight Consecutive Songs on the Billboard Hot 100

6ix9ine has been absolutely lighting up the charts. Since late 2017, he has had eight songs in a row reach the Billboard Hot 100. The first and most commercially successful, “Gummo”, was released in October 2017, reached #12, and has since gone platinum. Kooda was released later that year, reached #50 and was certified gold. In 2018, 6ix9ine has had six songs reach the Hot 100 – Keke, Gotti, Tati, Billy, Rondo, and his most successful, Fefe, which features Nicki Minaj and Murda Beatz. Say what you will about the guy, but there’s no denying that he’s had one successful year.
