Top 5: Movie Inspired Games You Never Played
Top 5: Movie Inspired Games You Never Played
Popular movies have spawned videogame counterparts for years. While many have made us cynical in their attempts to make quick cash, some have managed to pay proper tribute to their source material. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’re taking a look at the Top 5 movie inspired games you never played.
Number 5: Spiderman 2
Way back in 2004, Spiderman was at the height of his popularity and gamers would have been content just to be able to swing around Manhattan as Spidy. Well, it turns out that’s exactly what Spiderman fans got!
Dishing out a large variety of crimes and emergencies to stop, and vivid use of Spider-Man's webbing abilities, players really felt like they were wearing the heroes spandex outfit.
Spiderman 2 finally nailed the web-swinging mechanic, in which you had to latch onto actual buildings, and not the sky. It may have taken dozens of Spiderman games to get it right, but hasn’t been done so well since. Unfortunately, the stigma of movie tie-ins kept Spidey from reaching a large audience.
Number 4: From Russia With Love
Released by EA in 2005, the developer surprised gamers with a third-person James Bond Adventure based on the original novel and 1963 film of the same name.
Featuring many elements of early Bond films, it included the voice and likeness of Sean Connery, vintage driving segments and its own multiplayer mode.
Unfortunately, by this point EA had burned too many bridges trying to capitalize on the iconic success of GoldenEye and gamers steered clear. Following this, EA lost the rights to Activision, and their excellent game sunk to the bottom of the bargain bin.
Number 3: Scarface: The World Is Yours
Written off as just another GTA Clone, Scarface wasn’t helped by its classic pedigree either. Sadly, it didn’t deserve the obscure treatment it got when it arrived in 2006.
Standing out from the crowd with style, it allowed you to re-live the classic moments from the iconic film, complete with a hauntingly Al Pacino-esque voice actor to play Tony Montana. Yes, it was almost too much or gamers to handle, and deserves respect for trying to "out-violent" Grand Theft Auto.
Number 2: The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay
It is considered one of the best first-person shooters of the past decade, and was hailed as a ‘must-have title’ by all the reviewers who laid their hands on it. So the question is, where’s your copy?
While not a direct movie adaptation, Escape from Butcher Bay allowed Riddick fans to step into the Furian’s shoes and re-live his daring escape from the high security penitentiary.
Mixing stealth with FPS combat was hard enough, but it carried a good story and respected its subject matter to a fault.
Number 1: Ghostbusters: The Video Game
The newest game on the list, it is also the best movie-based game you probably haven’t played.
Sure “Ghostbusters: The VideoGame” saw several delays and came with several low-quality ports to the non HD consoles, but the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions where completely cinematic.
Not only was this game scripted with care to act as a third Ghostbusters movie, it was crafted as a love letter to the fans.
In fact, all of the original actors lent their voices to the adventure, and in the role of a cadet you felt like a true Ghostbuster. Actually, the only thing that sucked about this game was that it had to end. Fortunately, its still widely available and you should swipe a copy without hesitation.
Conclusion
Movie-Based Games have gained a reputation as quick and dirty cash-ins that prey on our love for a story and its characters. But as this list demonstrates, sometimes the unexpected happens and the game goes above and beyond expectations.
