#30: King Hyperion
Hyperion is already a stupidly powerful character. Yet if he was twisted into a psychopath, he’d no longer hold anything back. And that’s what you get with King Hyperion. Coming from Marvel’s Earth-4023, Mark Milton used his Superman-esque powers to take over his Earth, slaying all the superheroes upon it and within the universe, sometimes groups of them. According to Hyperion, he even took out Glactus. Even after the remaining humans launched a nuclear arsenal at him, Hyperion survived and ruled over his barren empire of dirt. Yet after joining the Exiles, he continued his devastating ways by killing the heroes from Earth-4400, including powerhouses like Thor.
#29: The Plutonian
From hero to the biggest bad in the “Irredeemable” universe, Daniel Hartigan, better known as the Plutonian, was similar to Superman in many ways. However, possessing reality-warping powers and a broken moral compass, he’s so much worse. On top of killing powerful heroes and villains with next to no effort, Tony has murdered millions of humans, including plunging Singapore into the ocean and setting off record-breaking earthquakes. His heat vision is so OP that, while in space, he carved his symbol into North America, destroying many cities along the way. As for his strength, Tony has held essentially a small black hole in his hand, which is an astonishing feat.
#28: Molecule Man
If it weren’t for his humanity and mental state holding him back and making him susceptible to manipulation, Marvel’s Owen Reece would be much higher in the list. After all, once he increased his power by absorbing the abilities of the Beyonder, Owen is so powerful that cosmic beings, like Galactus, are wary of him. With just a thought, he could wipe the cosmic beings from existence or twist reality to change them into something else. With reality warping abilities and the power to control molecules, there is essentially nothing he can’t do. Owen was even a major factor in helping restore the multiverse following the “Secret Wars” event.
#27: Knull
Considering he’s the god of darkness and formed the symbiotes, Knull is a big deal. The Celestials are often depicted as one of the most powerful beings in Marvel. Yet Knull, with the aid of his Necrosword, has killed many of them and put them under his control. Able to command legions of symbiotes, Knull quickly dominated the Earth in the “King in Black” event and covered the planet in darkness. The god also overpowered Sentry, one of Marvel's most powerful heroes. Knull ripped him in half and absorbed from within him the Void, one of the most powerful villains. If it wasn’t for the Enigma Force, created to be an antithesis of Knull, his rule over Earth would’ve never ended.
#26: Superboy-Prime
A clear sign of a character’s power is if their actions can change reality. Well, when it comes to DC’s Superboy-Prime, that’s definitely the case. Able to absorb yellow sun energy better than any other Kryptonian, Prime is essentially Superman, if his powers were turned up to 11 and didn’t have his morals. When anger consumed him, Prime shattered the walls of the Paradise Dimension, altering reality and bringing characters, such as Jason Todd, back to life. With his vast power and anger, Prime has killed multiple Supermen, including Conner Kent and Earth-Two’s Kal-L, both during the event “Infinite Crisis.” Another time, he visited Earth-15. On top of killing their Superman and heroes, Prime obliterated the entire planet.
#25: Superior Iron Man
If you ever wondered what Tony Stark, with his vast genius and resources, would be capable of had he gone dark side, then you have Marvel’s Superior Iron Man. When all the heroes and villains had their morals inverted in “Avengers & X-Men: AXIS,” Stark avoided being turned back to normal. So, he infected San Francisco citizens with the Extremis virus. With an app, people could become “perfect.” Yet to make it even more upsetting, the free trial would expire, and people were forced to pay $99.99 per day to use it. Essentially, Stark was controlling reality with this virus. After all, he gave Daredevil his eyesight back, only to cruelly take it away. If Superior Stark didn’t have his ego, nothing would’ve stopped him.
#24: Nekron
In the universe of superheroes, it’s typical for them to kick the bucket and be resurrected. However, in DC, rather than enjoy life again, there’s the threat of Nekron. As the personification of Death with a capital D and the leader of the Black Lantern Corps, Nekron is a major problem. During the “Blackest Night” event, the Lord of the Unliving forced resurrected characters into his thrall as Black Lanterns. This included powerhouse characters like Superman, Wonder Woman, and the Anti-Monitor, who Nekron placed inside the corp’s battery. Essentially unable to be killed, Nekron can bring people back to life with necromancy, albeit as zombies. While less dramatic, but as powerful, a simple touch from the being is enough to take lives.
#23: Mephisto
While Marvel has had several characters fit the role of the universe’s devil, Mephisto’s power has stood the test of time. Essentially immortal since he’ll return to his dominion of hell when defeated, the charismatic creature’s biggest strength is his reality-warping powers. Able to use it for a Faustian bargain, Mephisto changed reality to restore Aunt May’s life and reverse Spider-Man’s identity being publicly exposed in exchange for Peter Parker’s marriage to Mary Jane being removed. Mephisto can also give characters huge power, such as creating Ghost Riders, even against their will. Nearly as frightening is Mephisto’s cunning, as he’s able to change forms and manipulate characters to do his bidding, such as tricking Adam and Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge.
#22: The Batman Who Laughs
There’s a running theory among fans that with enough prep time, Batman could beat anyone. Well, if you throw in the distortion of the Joker and his lack of ethics, then you have the Batman Who Laughs. Infected with the Joker Venom after killing his archnemesis, Batman’s vast and corrupted intellect allowed him to kill every hero on his planet, Earth Negative 22, including Superman, with horrible tactics. Yet after having his brain placed into the body of a Batman with Doctor Manhattan's powers, Bruce became a god, able to change reality however he liked, even bringing his allies back to life. Under the name of the Darkest Knight, Batman was able to overpower one of DC’s strongest beings, Perpetua.
#21: God Emperor Doom
With his in-depth knowledge of magic and science, Doctor Doom is already one of the most feared foes of Marvel’s superheroes. Yet once he became God Emperor Doom in “Secret Wars,” he was something else. By using the Molecule Man to channel the Beyonder’s power, Doom reshaped reality into Battleworld, patchworked with several universes. He was able to change the history of characters, such as making Reed Richards’s family his own, and turning Doctor Strange and a battalion of Thors into his minions. Massive powerhouses, such as Doctor Strange, a Phoenix-possessed Cyclops, and Thanos, were easily killed by Doom. Even Black Panther with an Infinity Gauntlet was beaten by him. If it wasn’t for Owen switching sides, nothing could’ve stopped Doom.
#20: Venom
The arch-villain turned hero turned occasional villain again may not seem particularly OP, but we’d ask you to consider one thing: his adaptability. Thanks to his ability to bond with a variety of hosts, including ones with superhuman abilities, this inky black baddie has a potentially endless variety of tricks up his sleeve. Add in the symbiote’s natural ability to shapeshift into a staggering number of tools and you’ve got a villain who ready for almost any hero you throw at him. Sure, he’s also critically weak to both fire and sonic-based attacks, but don’t let those Achilles’ Heels trick you into underestimating this deadly being.
#19: Korvac
This villain’s story is long and involved, so it’s fitting that it’s known as the Korvac Saga. Beginning as a lowly human worker from the distant future, he was first turned into a cyborg and then imbued with massive amounts of cosmic power, turning a humble laborer into something approaching a god. The notorious villain could only be opposed by the combined might of the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy when he arrived on modern-day Earth, and actually managed to outright kill most of them. Just before his death, he brought the heroes back to life, proving his massive power levels even further. Not many villains can claim that kind of body count.
#18: Brainiac
His moniker may imply a villain who favors brains over brawn, but this longtime foe of the Man of Steel actually has both power and intelligence to spare. His origins have varied, but across the many DC Comics timelines, he’s always been depicted as a powerful alien android, one with near limitless intelligence and resources. His goal is often to collect and catalog all forms of life, preserving a few samples and destroying the rest, and it’s this drive that’s brought him to blows with Superman on many occasions. Plus, his spaceship looks like a giant robot skull with tentacles coming out of it. If that’s not a power move, what is?
#17: Onslaught
It’s often the case that enemies can get a whole lot done when they finally work together. But in this instance, that might not be a good thing. This hulking being was brought to life when a portion of Magneto’s psyche infiltrated the mind of Professor X, causing the X-Men’s leader to develop a dangerous split personality. This being, a combination of Magneto’s rage and hatred for humanity and Prof X’s massive psychic powers, eventually manifested as this gargantuan villain, whose psionic abilities allowed him to take down almost all the Marvel heroes in one climactic battle. It was even powerful enough to survive having its body destroyed, living on as a being of pure energy.
#16: Annihilus
With a massive army known as the Annihilation Wave under his control, this insectoid villain once broke into the Marvel Universe from his home dimension of The Negative Zone, kickstarting a war that nearly wiped out all known life. In addition to his army, the villain also wields the Cosmic Control Rod, a device that allows him to control matter, energy and even space itself. That means that he could reduce you to a pile of ash, transmute that ash into a tasteful statuette and then transport it into the heart of a star a few universes over. So seriously, don’t get on his bad side.
#15: The Void
We all have our dark sides, but thankfully none like this. The hero known as The Sentry was once one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe, a respected superhero with a heart of gold. But when a being emerged who appeared to be a dark inversion of the golden hero, the only way to keep it under control was to erase all memories of both the hero and his opposite number from the minds of everyone on Earth. That should say it all, really. This villain was such a threat that Earth had to sacrifice one of its greatest heroes just to keep it contained!
#14: Amazo
We talked a bit earlier about the power of versatility and adaptability, and few villains have those qualities like this one. He, or rather it, has the ability to replicate the superhuman powers of any hero or villain it encounters, which understandably makes it one of the deadliest foes of the Justice League. Originally created by the mad scientist Doctor Ivo, the first android and several other models with the same ability have occasionally battled the League, pushing the legendary heroes to their limit by throwing their powers back at them. But then, there was also that time Batman took one down by himself….because: Batman.
#13: The Marquis of Death
This imposing villain has the ability to warp all of reality, allowing him to change, reshape or outright destroy anything and everything he encounters, even on a universal scale. While he was originally imprisoned by the Reed Richards of his home dimension, he eventually escaped and went on a universal murder spree, by which we mean he destroyed numerous alternate realities before arriving in the mainline Marvel Universe. It’s pretty safe to say that no other villain has a body count like his, given that he’s destroyed an unknown number of universes, each one with a nigh-uncountable number of inhabitants. We’d ask how he sleeps at night but just look at the guy. He clearly hasn’t slept in eons.
#12: Mister Mxyzptlk
As if his name wasn’t bad enough, this interdimensional being is a frequent source of headaches for the Man of Steel. He may not look like much of a threat, but his mischievous nature and reality-altering powers make him a very dangerous and unpredictable foe. In some continuities, he can be temporarily banished back to his home in the fifth dimension by tricking him into saying his own name backward. This sounds pretty ridiculous, but honestly, it makes as much sense as anything else he does whenever he turns up.
#11: Trigon
We all get into fights with our parents from time to time, but look on the bright side: at least one of your parents isn’t an evil all-powerful demon from an alternate dimension. With a wide array of demonic abilities including eldritch energy blasts and a powerful magic staff, this enemy of the Teen Titans is as exactly as dangerous as he looks. It’s not all that surprising that he’s conquered numerous extra-dimensional civilizations, and completely wiped out the ones that refused to bend the knee. Basically, if he pays your dimension a visit, you’re in trouble.
#10: Black Adam
The arch nemesis to DC’s appropriately named Captain Marvel, Teth-Adam harnesses the ancient Egyptian powers of Shazam. Banished to a distant star, he spends 5,000 years flying back to Earth, and eventually reappears as Black Adam. Adam has fought just about everyone in the Justice League, proving more than a match for Superman thanks to his magical abilities. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s immortal in his Black Adam form. If he has a weakness, it’s his own ego, but as supervillain weaknesses go, it’s not a bad one to have.
#9: Solomon Grundy
He might not be the most physically powerful DC supervillain, but Solomon Grundy makes this list purely on his ability to take a beating, but zombies wouldn’t be zombies if they were easy to kill. Grundy’s body deflects bullets, absorbs energy and doesn’t need oxygen, and on the rare occasions he is destroyed, he just comes right on back. The only catch is that he often returns with varying levels of strength and intelligence, but this unpredictability has worked in his favour, and he has used it effectively against Superman, Green Lantern, and sometimes – the entire Justice League.
#8: Thanos
You might know him as the purple guy in the really big chair doing a whole lotta nothin’, but comic book fans recognize Thanos as the Mad Titan, obsessed with death from an early age, and killing millions of his own race to impress its physical embodiment, Mistress Death. This is even before he obtains the infinity gauntlet, which grants its bearer complete control over all aspects of the universe. As a gift of love to Death, Thanos wipes out half the life in all the universe with a literal snap of his fingers, imprisons many of its greatest heroes, and makes quick work of the Avengers before he is finally defeated.
#7: Doomsday
Doomsday is living proof that you don’t need brains to get what you want. In fact, Doomsday doesn’t have a brain at all. Created by an alien scientist, Doomsday is a beast of raw power fuelled only by hatred. His anger sends waves throughout the universe, and he eventually catches Superman’s attention, which does not end well for the Man of Steel. What’s worse – when you do eventually kill him, he comes back to life, immune to dying in that specific way ever again.
#6: Dark Phoenix
A member of the original X-Men team, Jean Grey becomes one with the mystical Phoenix Force, which grants her a host of other powers to go along with her telekinesis and telepathy. But, you know what they say about too much of a good thing. The limitless power ultimately corrupts Jean, and she emerges as the Dark Phoenix. Although Jean fights to regain control, the power of the Phoenix overwhelms her, and Jean must sacrifice herself to prevent the destruction of the universe. Even when the Phoenix Force returns to earth, the combined efforts of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes aren’t enough to stop its destructive rampage.
#5: Apocalypse
The original mutant, En Sabah Nur – literally meaning “The First One” – believes in natural selection, and he takes it upon himself to destroy the weak in order to preserve the worthy. While he isn’t the most recurring villain the X-Men face, he is considered one of the most, if not the most deadly. Boasting one of the longest lists of superpowers in all of Marvel, and the list only gets longer, as he can absorb powers from other mutants. He may have been beaten before, but his comic book reincarnation always means bad news for the X-Men.
#4: Anti-Monitor
He might not be one of the most recognizable super villains, but the Anti-Monitor may just have the highest body count in all of DC. At the beginning of all existence, the Anti-Monitor absorbed his entire universe, and eventually discovered the multiverse by tearing a hole in matter itself. He is responsible for the Crisis on Infinite Earths, which led to the deaths of Supergirl and the Flash. In terms of actual superpowers, Anti-Monitor has the standard cosmic supervillain bundle, but he takes on the powers of each universe he absorbs. And just in case you weren’t sure, that’s a whole lot of universes.
#3: Dormammu
Primarily a Doctor Strange villain, Dormammu has never actually been beaten in battle by his magical foe. He has been tricked, imprisoned and bargained with, but these are just minor setbacks for the Lord of Chaos. Born of magic and composed of pure energy, he is virtually unbeatable in the long run, with magical powers beyond that of a mere God. Dormammu actually rules his own reality, the Dark Dimension, but he still makes his presence felt throughout the multiverse.
#2: Darkseid
One of the Justice League’s most feared foes, Darkseid rules over the fictional world of Apokolips. Compared to Nazi Germany by comic book creator Jack Kirby, Apokolips is populated with militant super villain parademons, so it takes a supremely overpowered deity to rule over the planet. Like many of the villains on this list, Darkseid has more or less every superpower in his respective universe, but he also possesses Omega powers. Superman and Doomsday are the only beings in DC to have survived Darkseid’s Omega beams, so powerful they can resurrect the dead, pass through matter and erase all organisms from existence. Luckily for the Justice League, they can be outrun.
#1: Galactus
Galactus remains one of the biggest mysteries in the Marvel universe, as the upper extent of his power is unknown, as is his true form. Galactus takes the form of a giant man in armour, but he is more than just a man. A cross between alien and God, he literally eats planets to survive, often sending the Silver Surfer to find worlds for him to devour. He is also the only known source of the power cosmic, which grants the user limitless manipulation of all organisms in the universe. While we may never know Galactus’ true power, the fact that it’s literally limitless is good enough for us.
